Mahar and Metcalf

How much longer do you keep them in A ball?  I can understand Mahar because this is his first professional season.  Lets look at Metcalf.  In his first professional season last year in A ball he hit .269/.351/.503 in 290 ABs and this season he is hitting .298/.375/.512 in 295 ABs and this is coming off two very nice seasons in college.  He has shown all he can show in A ball and it is time for him to show what he can do in Frisco.

Metcalf
He's interesting...he turns 23 in August, so he should be old enough to get a look at Frisco.

The one big red flag with him, though, is his strikeouts -- he's got 80 in 81 games, and a K/BB ratio of over 2/1.  You've got to worry a little bit when high-A batters are striking out a guy that much.

I agree on the K's
But then again he doesn't have anything else to prove in A ball.  Should Nate Gold also jump up?  He is 24, I think, and should not be in A ball and his actually hitting well, for once.

I would like to say
...that I don't have a strong opinion. :)

I'm ready to see Mahar in AA, but I'm not upset that he's not there yet. His stats are right on the edge of dominating his league, but I'm not totally convinced that he would succeed in AA right now. I think he would, though, and again, I'm ready to see him called up.

I think Metcalf would struggle in AA at the moment. My plan for him, I think, would be to get him to like early August in Bakersfield, and if he's really doing well at the time, give him the last 2-3 weeks in Frisco to get his feet wet.

I'll tell you the sad thing, though. Those two and Webster (and maybe Boggs) are basically the only position prospects left on either A level club. Imagine that Bakersfield lineup with neither Mahar nor Metcalf in it. Uggggly.

By the way
Wouldn't this Larson release open up a spot for either Metcalf or Mahar?

You have:

Hart-1B
Meyer-2B
Arias-SS
Taylor-3B/OF
Yan-CF
Sinisi-LF
W Smith-OF/DH
Nickeas/crap-C

Unless you're concerned with getting guys like Brian Esposito or Cam Coughlan at bats, there seems to be a spot wide open for one of those guys, if they're ready.

It would
but really outside of Arias, Sinisi and Nickeas no one should really be blocking anyone.  Really most of the hitters on that Frisco roster could easily be dropped and the system as whole be no worse off.  The bats in this system are pathetic.  BTW, I am glad to see the brilliant pick of Mayberry just tearing up short season ball.

Could possibly be nice
Mahar or Metcalf could just be the shot in the arm the RR's offense needs.
I said it before, now I'll say it again. *** Free Gerald Laird!!! ***
