Around SBN: NFL Roundtable: Which Draft Pick Is Most Likely To Bust?

Cowboys Needs.....

Offensive Tackle-Bill Parcells said this is the most likely positions the Cowboys are going to get in the first round of the draft instead of a receiver.

My prediction of the Offensive Tackle that we will take-Winston Justice, USC, Jr., One of the best in the draft and if he can get his act together with his great size then he can have lots of sucess.

Free Saftey-Ever since Darren Woodsen retired this position has been a bit shakey and the Cowboys could possibly take a free saftey in the draft.

My Prediction-Michael Huff, Texas, Very athletic Saftey who can also play corner and this would be a terrific choice on the Cowboys part.

Wide Receiver-With the old core of wide recievers on this team in Terry Glenn and Johnson the Cowboys definitly need a fast playmaker.  I think this is the Cowboys biggest need and I think they need to get one in the first round and if not that then the second definitly.

My Prediction-There are alot of options here, I would love them to get the fast and explosive  Sinorice Moss who plays for Miami and runs a 4.40.  Other options are Santana Holmes and Derek Hagan who very possibily will go in the first round.

Quarterback-The Cowboys need a quarterback of the future and dont tell me Romo or Hensen will be because there already getting kind of old.

My Prediction-Reggie McNeal who could go late first or early second or could drop to the third possibly but I think the cowboys really need to get a young quarterback to seceed Drew Bledsoe.  Other canidates could be Jay Cutler of Vanderbelt or Darrell Hackney of U.A.B.

Cornerback-If Aaron Glenn retires or leaves then we need another Corner possibly in the draft.

My Prediction-We probaly need one in the 4th or 5th round and some possible mid rounders could be Marcus Maxey of Miami or Cedric Griffin of Texas.

The Cowboys have alot of holes to fill in the draft and hopefully we will get some help in free agency.

Reggie McNeal
His stock plummeted this season.  He's a second day pick.

I'd like to see some team take him, make him their third string QB, use him some as a WR, and make him the holder on FGs.  He gives you a threat on fakes or botched snaps, and he's got the size, speed and athleticism to be another Randle-El, conceivably.

by Adam J. Morris on Jan 1, 2006 8:37 PM CST reply actions

Huh?
WR? Are you kidding me? He's a QB...i hate when people try and convert QBs to somthing they are not...He had a decent year this year, last year he had a pretty damn good year...

And he's not 'another Randle-El', he is  a lot bigger 6'2' than 5'10

by Longhorn on Jan 1, 2006 8:52 PM CST up reply actions

He might slip
but teams are willing to take the chance, They want mobile quarterbacks these days and hes possibly the fastest quarterback in the draft running a 4.35 40.    He has a strong arm but needs to work on his mechanics and precision.

Quick QB's
Sure every team wants a quick mobile qb but when is the last time a speedy qb won a Super Bowl? Steve Young? But even he was a pass first qb. What the Cowboys need is a pocket qb that can elude the rush.
For the love of GOD sell the team Tom!

Because
I think Reggie can become a pretty good passing quarterback, dont think I want a run only QB because I think Reggie can become a good passer that can scramble when needed.  Im not a fan of run only, I think Vick is the most overated player in sports.

I do think..
Jay Cutler might be the dark horse and suprise some teams with his talent. I wouldn't mind seeing the Cowboys take him or the kid Brady Quinn from ND if he decides to come out.

Brady Quinn..
Hes not going to go in, he will be in next years draft and will the first overall pick.  I only dream of the Cowboys getting Brady....

Reggie
Reggie quit on aNm this season.  He will go in round five or later and last no longer than three years in the NFL.  He will not be an impact player, or a player of consequence in the NFL.

I am..
a friends of Reggie's and no he didnt quit. He can be a solid backup. He will be a better NFL QB than Vince Young.

Also...
They'd have to trade up to get an extra first rounder to get both Huff and Winston.

Using high first round picks on safeties is dumb, anyway.

by Adam J. Morris on Jan 1, 2006 8:40 PM CST reply actions

Miles
I respectfully disagree with almost everything that you said.  First, Justice looks like one of those guys that will jump up the boards unless he has another off-field incident.  Second, we only have 1st round pick, and Huff should be gone a ways before we pick at #20, and you have us using 4 1st round picks by your own estimation.

We don't need a WR right now anyway.  Glenn, KJ and Crayton are doing great right now, and we should have 2 more years of effective play from them.  We especially

We absolutely don't need a QB right now.  Bledsoe will be here for 2 more years, at least, and we have seen how good he is.  That means that we have at least another year to find out if Romo or Henson can hack it.  Reggie will not go until the 2nd day, and he isn't anyone that I want as a possible QB.

We also don't need another CB.  Glenn should be back.  He knows that his body can't take every down punishment, so this should be a great place for him to stay.  Even if he does go, we have Reeves and Jones who have both stepped up big-time this year.  BTW, a 4th-5th round CB is usually only good for special teams work in their 1st year.  They get taken that low because they have alot to learn.

WR
something we desperately need...most preferably a SPEED WR

by Longhorn on Jan 1, 2006 9:03 PM CST up reply actions

Couldnt
say it better myself, the Cowboys dont have any explosive players on offense.  We need to get some young speed and excitement on this offensive side of the ball.

Terry Glenn
He is still one of the faster WR in the NFL and has blown by CBs alot this year.  He's also one of the best pass catchers.

by altercall on Jan 1, 2006 9:20 PM CST up reply actions

Not sure...
what your watching? Terry Glenn has been good all year.

by cjbray on Jan 1, 2006 10:14 PM CST up reply actions

that fast or explosive.  Hes average.

by miles on Jan 1, 2006 10:20 PM CST up reply actions

What have you two been watching?
Glen is 13th in the NFL in rec yards, 3rd in YPC.  How is that "not explosive"?  Just imagine where he would be if Bledsoe had time to let him get into some routes...

by altercall on Jan 1, 2006 10:38 PM CST up reply actions

No
I said he was one of the fastER WR in the league, and he is.  He might not be one of the fastest 5-10 WR in the league, but he is at the top of that next few.  He can burn a DB.  More importantly, he knows how to play WR, he can get open most of the time, he knows hoow to set up a WR, and he can catch the ball better than most of the WR in the league.

by altercall on Jan 1, 2006 11:49 PM CST up reply actions

hmmmm
That sounds exactly like what everyone siad last offseason.  All I heard from anyone was about how old our WR were and how they couldn't make it through a season healthy.  How we had the worst WR in the league, or we wouldn't be able to do anthing on O with them.

Well, look at us this year.  How many balls have they dropped?  How many times has Bledsoe not been able to find a WR open when given time?  How many INTs were cause by WRs not making plays?  If we fix the OL, our WR look great.

We will need some WR, but not at the cost of a 1st or second round pick.  We have too many other needs at present to go after the luxury of getting depth at WR.

by altercall on Jan 1, 2006 9:26 PM CST up reply actions

Its our biggest need
There getting older and older, they cant play forever.  Besides maybe a offensive linemen this is definitly our biggest need.  We need a fast young player, second round at the latest to get one.
Jon Daniels is my hero....

by miles on Jan 1, 2006 9:30 PM CST up reply actions

Our WRs
are slow and can't get open on a consistant basis, unless we do trick plays...

by Longhorn on Jan 1, 2006 10:12 PM CST up reply actions

Im
not saying we will get all of these guys, these are possible first round picks picking one of them, not all.  Drew Bledsoe is 35 and we need a succesor either this year in the draft or next.  I would like to trade for Philip Rivers from the Chargers if they choose to keep Drew Breez.  Teams want fast quarterbacks these days and hes the fastest in the draft with a 4.35 40.  I dont mind taking a corner that has a lot to learn because they can hold off for a year or so but incase of injury its nice to have.  And the wide reciever thing, you accually think that Glenn will stay healthy?  This is the first year that Glenn has stayed healthy the full season.  We definitly need a receiver in the draft maybe over everything else.  We need a explosive player on offense which we dont have at all, just old players that are going to be out of there prime if not already.  Im assuming you want a offenive linemen in the first round, but if we dont need anything else then what in the second?
Jon Daniels is my hero....

by miles on Jan 1, 2006 9:03 PM CST up reply actions

What we do need
You were right on your first point, we do need to get a RT to start with.  If Justice is there, he might be the pick, but it's a bit early to sort all that out.  Wemight even trade down or use our 2nd here, though I hope we do use that spot for RT.

Second on the list is FS.  Davis has come on a little as of late, but I always thought of him as a SS and not a FS.  I think this is an area that would be well adressed in FA, they are usually pretty cheap, or maybe a 2nd round pick.  FS usually go later in the draft, so you can still get a very good FS in the 2nd round.  Huff should be gone by #20, and that pick and salary togather is a ton to pay for a FS when Williams is about to be up for a contract.

The next are of need is at LB.  We need another OLB and another ILB.  The only 2 guys that have proven anything, assuming Dat's done, are Ware and James.  I could live with Fujita for one more year if we have to, but we need at least 1 of those positions filed through FA or with our 2nd.

Other positions to look at:

C- Kevin Mawae is going to be a FA, and at his age he should be pretty cheap.  He has BP ties and we might be able to get him on a 2 yr deal.  He could compete with Johnson and maybe teach him some stuff.

OG- It wouldn't hurt to get another body in here at OG.  Allen is old, but he might be good for another 2-3 years.  I'm pretty confident that Rivera will be much improved after a FULL ofseason to rehab his back and get his strength back, but if Peterman isnt able to hack it, and with Gurode a FA, we may need to add some insurance.

K- I have no idea how to adress this, and apparently neither do the Cowboys, but we need someone other than Suisham or Cundiff in here next year.

FB- Porbably the thinest position in the NFL.  There are only 4-5 good FB in the NFL, and maybe 10-15 servicable ones.  That being the case, alot of teams have gone to a flex back.  With BPs power running game you need a good lead blocker, and I'm tired of seeing Witten trying to play FB.

by altercall on Jan 1, 2006 9:19 PM CST up reply actions

draft
the biggest need is oline, i see this years draft being much like last years, only oline instead of d.

but, most elite tackles are gone within the top 15picks, if a good tackle isnt there in the 20 range where the cowboys will be picking, i could see them trading down to get an extra second.

huff will be gone by 20 im betting, since he is really a corner who converted to safety.
justice likewise will be gone im sure.

mcneal is 3rd round pick at best, wouldnt be a bad pick, but i dont see it, i see the cowboys staying with what they have at qb atleast for now. btw, bledsoe is 33 not 35. and the qb from vanderbelt cutler, he's climbing up draft boards, likely a 1st round pick.

i think the cowboys really need a wr, but i dont see parcells taking one in the first round, not with the team having larger needs.

by rentz on Jan 1, 2006 9:30 PM CST reply actions

He said
that there getting a O linemen in the first round.  Hopefully a reciver in the second round.  Dont be so sure about Mcneal in the third round, im not saying your wrong but some teams take big risks for athletic quarterbacks. 1st rond linemen, 2nd receiver, and third free saftey.  i was just looking at a mock draft that said cutler would go 3rd overall...LOL

Are you an Aggie fan????  That's the only reason anyone would expect McNeil to go before the late 3rd round.

How many times does everyone have to say this, we have too many needs to spend a 1st or 2nd rounder on a WR.  We have 3 WR, a 4th wouldn't get any PT.  It would be a wasted pick for next season.

Plus, that would take us out of getting a good FS, to gambling on a 3rd rounder there.  The good FS go between the late 1st and late 2nd rounds.

Aggie Fan
I'm a HUGE Aggie fan, and I have to tell you that I think McNeal sucks. He's a great athlete, but not a great QB. I said all season that the Ags had a better guy on the bench. McNeal is Quincy Carter all over again.

Cudos
Cudos to you Cosa.  I know quite a few Aggies who will swear up and down that Reggie is a great QB and that it was the rest of the team that let him down.

On a similar note, I also know a few UT fans who have sworn to me that there are a half dozen teams that have already said they would take VY at the top of the draft as a QB.  I just laughed.

by miles on Jan 1, 2006 10:47 PM CST up reply actions

What????
A 3.35????  In what, 10 yard dash?  McNiel is fast for a QB, but he isn't even a 4.4-4.5 guy if you get his real (combine) numbers.  He also doesn't have a good arm, at least not for the NFL.

Oh. and on the Vick comparison, he's slower, with a weaker arm and doesn't have the moves Vick does.  And I don't want a Vick anyway.  Running QBs can't beat a top-notch D.  That's why Vick started throwing more this year.  Every running QB eventually learns that the best place to be it in the pocket.  If they can't make that switch they don't survive.

Watch that number.
When the OFFICIAL times come out, he's going to be one of the guys that they talk about who's times were way off what was rumored.  I've watched the guy play alot (even twice in person) and he isn't nearly that fast.

Keep an eye on...
Brad Smith, the QB from Missouri. A mix between Matt Jones and Antwaan Randle-El. All-time leading rushing quarterback in NCAA history. I really would not be surprised if Big Bill took him late (third or fourth round-ish) and turned him into a slot receiver/3rd string quarterback.

And I'm not just saying this because I go to Mizzou.

OK, maybe I am. But still...keep an eye on him. Someone is going to get a heck of a player on draft day when they take Smith.

by ghtd36 on Jan 1, 2006 10:45 PM CST reply actions

interesting
I haven't seen enough of him to have made up my mind, but I'd give him a shot before Reggie or VY.  I still don't think he would be good at QB, but maybe at WR.  I do, however, think that VY could be a top WR if he can learn the position.

by altercall on Jan 1, 2006 10:57 PM CST up reply actions

would be a good idea but its not worth getting VY top 10 in the draft and put him at receiver, its just not worth it.

Pettiti
One way for the team to improve in a big way: Rob Pettiti gets hit by a truck. Or retires. There ought to be a bounty on his head. 2 other comments I disagreed with: Someone said that that chump from a&m would make a better QB than Vince Young. Ridiculous. You have your thinking cap screwed on a little too tight. Also, while it would not be prudent to spend our 1st on a WR, we don't have 3 good ones. Glen had a good year, but we could use another deep threat. Could we handle 1 year of Rosa Parks....

by Brian Thomas on Jan 2, 2006 1:23 AM CST reply actions

I think
I think that if Charles Rogers is released from Detriot the Cowboys should go after him.  Big Bill has been able to keep Keyshawn in check and should be able to straighten out Rogers.  He would be an excellent pick up.

Pettitti
Well, to be fair to Pettitti, a 6th-round pick shouldn't be starting in the NFL as a rookie. That one's on Parcells, IMO.

by RCCook on Jan 2, 2006 10:18 AM CST up reply actions

VY vs Reggie
It's a mute point becasue neither one will be any good as an NFL QB.  I tend to think that Reggie is a better passer.  I've seen both in person twice and it seems to me that Reggie is alot more acurate.  VY might have a better arm.  VY has so much talent around him that he only throws to wide open receiver, and even then he misses them alot.  He never has to throw a ball on the money, and when he tries he is way off target.

Let's use an analogy that we can all identify with.  VY's passing is like my golf game.  When I try to hit it on the green I can get it there most of the time.  When I try to hit it past a tree or at the flag, I hit it into the tree or off the green.  I can hit something that's really big, but I can't hit the fine targets.  In the NFL, you have to hit the fine targets to succeed.

by altercall on Jan 2, 2006 2:41 PM CST up reply actions

Give me something
At least give me your rational.  I'm telling you what I've seen and what is freely evident if you watch the films.  I will give VY this, he does seem to have decent football smarts  I mean, there are alot of QBs out there that can't identify an open WR (Cody Hodges for one).

by altercall on Jan 2, 2006 3:04 PM CST up reply actions

well
Just for the record, the Cowboys will be picking between 14 and 17 depending on how they decide ties. So whoever said with the 20th pick we cant get someone.... wrong.

I think at 14 we could get Huff or any number of good Off. Tackles. Hell even at 17. This draft is deep at OL.

OL, Secondary, More DL help
If you fix the OL then the Cowboys' offense can succeed in this NFL.

The defense is overrated.  We need yet another speed rusher (if not 2), corner help, and a FS.  Playmakers preferably.

by zackaryl on Jan 2, 2006 9:46 AM CST reply actions

DL Help
They don't need DL help, they need LB help which can stop the run.  With Ellis, Glover, Fuerguson, etc., manning the DL, that is fine.  However, they are greatly lacking at the LB position.

DL or LB
Either way I thinkt he pass ruch is still underwhelming

by zackaryl on Jan 2, 2006 2:06 PM CST reply actions

Offensive line
I can't believe there is even discussion about this.  The offensive line is horrendous and they can't function offensively with it.  Allen in the Pro Bowl is a joke.  He's still a capable guard but that's it and he is the only guy they have that is even at that level but he's old.  The rest is crap.  You can't win with that mess up front.

Aside from Witten, no other skill position guy is a great player but they are all good enough to compete if the line was just passable instead of laughable.

I would use the first 2 picks on linemen and move up via trade if I could to get the best one available.   Then pick Mason Crosby in the 3rd if he is still there.

Soriano trade = Good. Padilla trade = Good. Young trade = Bad.
