Analysis of 2007 free agent pitchers

Pretty good analysis, though he left out Adam Eaton. Summation: there isn't much out there. Padilla may be the best major league free agent out there, though it sounds as though Kerry Wood might be worth a gamble.

trade rumors
Not really that impressed....
He seems to think that because a pitcher had an "abnormally low hit rate" that he'll regress to average, while ignoring how that hit rate came about (whether it was from improved K rate, better defense, or just luck, in which case, yes, his hit rate will likely regress). He also doesn't seem to be consistent with which pitchers are going to regress to their base-line hit-rate, and who won't.
OTOH, it is nice to get a list of who's out there, and you can't expect much from a review when you're posting just a summary for each player (though I guess since he chose that format, you could take him to task for that).
Also, you'd take Padilla over Schmidt, Zito, Pettitte, or Mussina?

'07 is looking ugly on the pitching front
I wouldn't be surpised if our old friend Joaquin Benoit get's another crack at the rotation.

I'm not joking, unfortunately

Benoit
If the Rangers lose Padilla, Eaton and Wells, and cannot sign or trade for another starting pitcher, I'd expect to see a rotation of Millwood, Tejeda, Rupe, Koronka, and someone from the group of Volquez, Loe, Rheinecker, and Danks.

Benoit
If they use him as a short reliever he may never start a game unless they want to give him another shot at it.

A group like that
My bet is that they'll bring in at least two vet starters. More likely three.

If Benoit makes the rotation
decent analysis and yes
If the Rangers have a payroll around the league average JD could spend $20M on the rotation and $20M on the line-up. I believe the Rangers need another top line guy to go with Millwood, plus a Padilla type at #3 and a vet on a 1 year contract in the #4 spot and let Tejada or another kid fill out the rotation. Zito looks to be asking for $15M, Schmidt already stated his desire to go to Seattle the next best choices are the guy from Japan and Padilla.
There are so many if's and unknown's that I am actually looking forward to seeing the off season moves.
Benoit...
Benoit could give you some middle innings, but you could tell the Rangers were waving the white flag when Buck put him in...I don't have the stats to back it up, but the team usually LOST when he pitched, because Buck wouldn't put him in unless we were seriously behind....

I thought he was fairly consistent
Since I'd rather see that roll go to rookie pitchers who may someday be starters or relievers, it wouldn't bother me to see Benoit get booted.
