Analysis of 2007 free agent pitchers

http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2007_mlb_free_agent_starting_pitchers/index.html

Pretty good analysis, though he left out Adam Eaton.  Summation: there isn't much out there. Padilla may be the best major league free agent out there, though it sounds as though Kerry Wood might be worth a gamble.

trade rumors
A pretty good site, even if his rumors rarely bear out. It's sort of like bad crack, it is unfulfilling, but leaves you needing more. The non-speculative stuff on the site is good, though, and often informative.

Not really that impressed....
with his analysis.

He seems to think that because a pitcher had an "abnormally low hit rate" that he'll regress to average, while ignoring how that hit rate came about (whether it was from improved K rate, better defense, or just luck, in which case, yes, his hit rate will likely regress). He also doesn't seem to be consistent with which pitchers are going to regress to their base-line hit-rate, and who won't.

OTOH, it is nice to get a list of who's out there, and you can't expect much from a review when you're posting just a summary for each player (though I guess since he chose that format, you could take him to task for that).

Also, you'd take Padilla over Schmidt, Zito,  Pettitte, or Mussina?

'07 is looking ugly on the pitching front
...for the Rangers.

I wouldn't be surpised if our old friend Joaquin Benoit get's another crack at the rotation.

Don't even joke
about Benoit in the Rotation.  I've seen that act way too much.

I'm not joking, unfortunately
It took me longer than most to sour on Benoit, but I have.  It's not that I want to see him starting.

Benoit
I'd be beyond shocked if he's a candidate for the 2007 rotation.

If the Rangers lose Padilla, Eaton and Wells, and cannot sign or trade for another starting pitcher, I'd expect to see a rotation of Millwood, Tejeda, Rupe, Koronka, and someone from the group of Volquez, Loe, Rheinecker, and Danks.

Benoit
He may not start out the year in the rotation, but if he's the long man I bet he ends up there at some point.  Especially if they're going to be relying a group like that.  It would probably be against their will.

If they use him as a short reliever he may never start a game unless they want to give him another shot at it.

A group like that
I doubt they will be relying like a group like that.

My bet is that they'll bring in at least two vet starters.  More likely three.

If Benoit makes the rotation
at any time next year, it will be time to go to Teixeira and Young and tell them its renegotiate or be traded time, because the season is over.

decent analysis and yes
the outlook for 07 Ranger staff is pretty ugly.  With $40-$45M already committed without any FA's for next season JD's job is most daunting from where I sit.  The most important question IMO is where will the 07 payroll end up.  If it is once again in the mid $60M's there is little room to fill out the rotation and sign/resign a CF, DH, LF, and utility player.
If the Rangers have a payroll around the league average JD could spend $20M on the rotation and $20M on the line-up.  I believe the Rangers need another top line guy to go with Millwood, plus a Padilla type at #3 and a vet on a 1 year contract in the #4 spot and let Tejada or another kid fill out the rotation.  Zito looks to be asking for $15M, Schmidt already stated his desire to go to Seattle the next best choices are the guy from Japan and Padilla.
There are so many if's and unknown's that I am actually looking forward to seeing the off season moves.

Benoit...
Benoit was so inconsistent...like the old Jerry Reed song "When you're HOT you're HOT, and when you're NOT, you're NOT"

Benoit could give you some middle innings, but you could tell the Rangers were waving the white flag when Buck put him in...I don't have the stats to back it up, but the team usually LOST when he pitched, because Buck wouldn't put him in unless we were seriously behind....

I thought he was fairly consistent
watch him in a pressure situation and watch him fold.  I think all he is, is a long reliever, to mop up games that are decided.

Since I'd rather see that roll go to rookie pitchers who may someday be starters or relievers, it wouldn't bother me to see Benoit get booted.
