Why is Guzman

Not a viable canidate for CF in Texas? His line of .282  69 252 45 71 9 2 1 14 36 36 31 9 .375  .345  .720  is very incouraging.

I would defintely try and sign GMJ but if it gets above 3/21 I would let Guzman roam CF and put that money into pitching or save it for another CF. With the other options out there been really null and void then to me Guzman should be getting more pub.

meh
I have a hard time getting too excited for a year of Willy Taveras-level production, especially when there are also big question marks about the level of production we will get at both corner outfield slots and at the DH slot.

I have been meaning....
...to do something on this for the past week or so...

I'll probably have something up on Monday or Tuesday about Guzman and GMJ, though...

If Guzman is in CF and
we start Laird at C, Kinsler @ 2B, Cruz in RF and Botts at DH the rangers would have five spots in their line-up with 1st or 2nd year players.  They would still have an opening in LF if Wilkerson is not resigned.  It appears dangerously close to a complete rebuilding project similar to what the Marlins have done.  Without commenting if this is a good or bad decision/direction I would simply point out they still need to address the pitching rotation.  They could just throw Tejada, Danks, Diamond, Volquez, etc behind Millwood ie. the tigers two years agoa and see what sticks.  Combine that rotation and line-up with the pen filled with youngster and the Rangers are not far from a complete rebuilding project for 07 with Millwood being the only FA acquisition.  A bit extreme but worth noting that this is a possibility.

Except...
Laird and Kinsler have both shown they are pretty solid major league players.

I think what you'd be looking at is a situation where you have someone like Sheffield in a corner spot, along with Wilkerson, Cruz and Botts, with a pseudo-platoon at the DH or corner outfield slot.

In which case, I don't think you are talking about a major, tear-it-down rebuilding plan.

Sheffield
Why do you want to pay $13 million for a 38-year old corner OF coming off an injury-plagued season in which he posted a .805 OPS?

right, they won't let themselves be batless
I don't think JD is going to go with Guzman et al unless he has another big bat to count on.  I am predicting that next year's cf won't be GMJ OR Guzman, though.  I think something else will happen, though I can't imagine what right now.  A trade or some other creative solution will happen is my bet (and hope).

If the Phillies
make Aaron Rowand available, that might be an option.

Phillies
That would be nice, solid defense, at about $5 million (club option).  They are making Burrell available ahead of Rowand it seems, but he costs too much in my opinion.

by t ball on Oct 19, 2006 1:29 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Why would they do that?
He's young, good, cheap, and plays an important position.

Man, our outfield outlook is looking a little fishbonesque:

Trading Rowand
Don't know why but, the Phillies official website mentions trading Rowand as a possible option if they can't move Burrell.

From MJH's Report
this morning:

Phillyburbs.com reporter Randy Miller speculates that Pat Gillick may look to deal Pat the Bat and / or center fielder Aaron Rowand this winter. Just something to file away since Jon Daniels has proven that he is among the few GM's in baseball who has no difficulty striking a deal with "Stand Pat."

Rowand
He's regressed pretty significantly over the past two seasons.

by BurntOrange on Oct 19, 2006 3:22 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

maybe
but I'd rather pay $5 mil for one year of him than $25-30 for 3 years of GMJ

by t ball on Oct 19, 2006 3:33 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Don't disagree
However, I might rather play someone like Lofton $2.5 million for one year, as compared to playing Rowand $5 million and giving the Phillies something in a trade for him.

by BurntOrange on Oct 19, 2006 3:50 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

What about a trade?
Tampa Bay might be a perfect trading parter if GMJ asks for too much.

They have a hole at 3b, and they have Baldelli and Crawford sitting around, and maybe even BJ Upton would be open to switching to CF for a chance to get out of Tampa Bay and into the majors full time. I'd LOVE to get my hands on Upton.

Blalock and Volquez for Crawford?

Blalock and Benoit for Upton?

I don't know, I'm just thinking out loud here.

But there are other options than just Fast Freddy or Free Agency if GMJ leaves.

You're right
Just thinking out loud and trying to say that a lot of these holes we are fretting are going to be impossible to fill via free agency could be filled via trade.

Thanks for thinking out loud.  Personally I like it.  I wish more people would think out loud.  But I think the fear of getting slammed stops them.

A good thought,
but I think George Washington Carver has completely brainstormed uses for peanuts and their derivatives.

Peanut oil is a good raw material for making biodiesel.  Is your car powered by a diesel engine?

No, I don't have a diesel engine.  The peanut butter car was pretty much a random thought.

Division Winning Centerfielder
The Rangers won with Darryl Hamilton and Otis Nixon in centerfield...not household names.  Granted Pudge, Juan, Rusy, and Thrill/Palmiero were the hitters.

If Guzman can get on base, from either the lead-off or nine-hole, and catch the ball in the gaps, I'm not sure he can't be either Hamilton or Nixon.  I guess the real question is can Young, Blalock, Teixiera, and Free Agent, be the above mentioned Ranger cast?

All well and good
But WHO sir, WHO, will be our Darren Oliver?

Who will be our Mike Henneman??
