Padilla likely gone?

TR Sullivan has his breakdown of the offseason on the Rangers site and says offhandedly that Padilla will likely be gone, "With Eaton and Padilla likely gone, the Rangers are left with Kevin Millwood and most likely Robinson Tejeda." Richard Durrett is saying the same thing, "Vicente Padilla will probably get too much money from someone else to stay in Texas. So Daniels will have to find some more one-year wonder guys to fill the rotation. But high on that list needs to be Mark DeRosa and Gary Matthews Jr. Both handle critical spots for the Rangers." This is somewhat puzzling because he also quotes Daniels as saying it is ludicrous to believe the Rangers will tear down the corp of the team and start over. "I've read some national publications where they say we are going to tear this thing down and start over," Daniels said. "That's ludicrous. I believe in this core, and I believe in the guys working around them in the organization. If that is true, one would think GMJ and Padilla would be priorities one and two.

Padilla
I don't think he's a one-year wonder, and the Rangers would do well to keep him.  Padilla might not be a #2 guy every season but he'd definitely help to stabilize the rotation for a while.  I'd have a hard time believing they could find four better pitchers.

Myself...
I'd like to keep Padilla.  He's shown he can withstand the ballpark and had a pretty nice season.  The Angels brawl is the only dark spot really for him on the season.

Ya, the 2 games with 7 ER and the 4 with 6 ER weren't dark spots at all.

big deal
look up how many pitchers have had 15-win, 200 inning seasons for the Rangers in the last 6 years.  Keep him.

I didn't say not to keep him.

Uh...
no pitcher is going to come out and go a full season without being rocked a couple times except the truly elite pitchers like Johan Santana and such.  Way to single out 4 starts to prove he sucks and ignore the other 29 starts.  How many other starters have come into Texas and thrown a 4.50 ERA with a 15-10 record and OAvg of .266.  Not to mention throw 200 innings.  Even his splits show a 4.80 ERA at home, 4.20 on the road, not too bad for Arlington.

I'm not saying he's a top flight pitcher, but he's shown he can handle Arlington and not get blown out of here.  Heck, Rangers don't have the pitching talent to just chunk pitchers aside that aren't horrible.  We've lived with years of the Doug Davis, Rob Bells, etc.

I pointed out 6 starts, not four. I know it's an "average" season for a #2 pitcher, I just wanted to point out that the brawl wasn't the only "dark spot" in his season.

Padilla
I would offer him 3 years, $25 million right now, with the understanding they we will pursue other pitchers once free agency begins, and try to get him signed before he gets onto the market.

My guess
and this is just a guess, would be that he'd call that bluff because you do need multiple starters, and because his agent would be willing to bet that he can get at least that elsewhere, with the potential for more, particularly because of the poor group available.

Psycho
Padilla has shown he can pitch in the Ballpark, but his temper and somewhat psycho mental state is not desireable.  On the other hand, pitching well at home is very important...

Yeah...
Rangers haven't really had that flare of someone willing to stick up for the team in a while on the pitching side.  Seems everyone always played it safe.

I agree.......
pitch inside and damn the consequences......if someone wants to fight, fine ! Don't dive out over the plate and you're chances of being hit will lessen.......If it means our guys have to look out, so be it ! We've seen how pitching to only the outside half of the plate works......not so well !

There's a difference
Between pitching inside and what Padilla did a few times this year.  Hitting a guy on purpose just because the guy before him hits a homerun is just being a little bitch.

I am baffled
that the idea of not pursuing Padilla is even being seriously considered.

Did I miss something? Are Jason Schmidt and Roger Clemens out with JD being wined and dined as we converse? No, because JD is stuck with Hicks and Buckles trying to put a little lipstick on the pig.

Hmmmmm. Well, maybe JD needs something along the lines of a, I don't know, maybe a sort of, social chairman.......
