Pending Free Agents

I know this is kind of stupid, but can someone point me in the right direction for a list of potential free agents this off-season.  I like to play GM sometimes, and I am not finding the list I am looking for.

Thanks in advance.

PS:  And by the way, I will work harder in the future to figure out a way to ask this type of question in 300 words or more in the future.

just did a list of the hitters and pitchers

by madyp on Oct 5, 2006 6:13 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

my personal dead horse to beat
interesting to see Padilla's name 4 times on those six lists.  He is among the top pitchers in:
  • allows fewer hits than IP
  • strikeout rate
  • strikeout/walk ratio
  • more than six innings per start
Other free agent starters on those four lists:
Jason Schmidt
Andy Pettitte

Roger Clemens made multiple lists averaged just under 6 innings per start.

Once again I'll say why would anyone not consider keeping Padilla?

by t ball on Oct 5, 2006 9:05 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Because
Someone's probably going to offer him a 3 year deal at about $7 mil a year.  I don't trust him to repeat.    I think there's a way for Daniels to sign two top pitchers this winter  --perhaps even Schmidt and Pettitte --  and I'd rather have those two guys.   A rotation with Millwood, Schmidt and Pettitte looks like a very legit
playoff rotation to me.

How would you feel
About a rotation consisting of
Millwood
Padilla
Peavy
Ol. Perez
Tejeda

by Ed Coffin on Oct 5, 2006 10:14 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Huh?
How could Texas possibly end up with Jake Peavy and Oliver Perez?

by mjh on Oct 5, 2006 10:21 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Intricate Dealing
  • Blalock to SD with a RHP prospect, Peavy and a B-C OF prospect to Texas
  • Three way big boom deal sending Teix + Arias to Baltimore; Tejada and Daniel Cabrera + a prospect to the Mets; Perez, Reyes, and Endy Chavez to Texas.
Just a vagary of the mind.

Those Trades
I like the first one. Don't know if SD would go for it, but I like it.

The second one, I'm not crazy about. I'm on the side of "You Don't Trade Teixeira, Period". But I can see a little upside to it.

Those trades
San Diego won't do the first one.

I wouldn't want Texas to do the second one.

Peavy
is worth SOOOO much more than Blalock.

Why would New York want to trade Reyes for an end-of-the-line Miguel Tejeda, and add like 15 million in salary while they're at it?

plus
tejada will get busted for roids in the next 2 years and pretty much be forced out of the league like palmeiro his needle buddy

Blalock to SD
If that happened, he'd hit 40 HRs, 100+ RBIs. Just so we're clear on that and no one starts bitching about it.

My answer
Was aimed at replying to Mike's good question. I don't advocate trading Teix, and presumed only SD might overpay for Hank.

I do want pitching that has some future value, though, if it's pitching the club is going after.

by Ed Coffin on Oct 5, 2006 12:01 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

You'd be lucky
to get a mediocre prospect for Blalock.  His stock seems to drop every year.

I suspect his stock is so low you are better off holding onto him, and see if he responds to another manager.

I think trading him now would be selling low.

I agree
he's probably the best candidate to perform better for another manager, and you just couldn't be selling him any lower than now.

by mjh on Oct 5, 2006 1:19 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

absolutely
We'd be fools to give up on him now...

So what is the actual ETD then?
Do you think he'll still be a ranger in 6 weeks?

by gp on Oct 5, 2006 4:03 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

yes, I do
But I'm not a believer in this Reverse-Midas-Touch you seem to espouse about our club.

JD will get offered little more than a Kyle Lohse-type by some smartass GM trying to take advantage of the "shorty," and, bright, thoughtful man that he is, he'll turn it down.

we're stuck with Blalock
I think, and that's probably not a completely bad thing.  I think he only gets moved if he's part of a package with a Danks or Hurley, otherwise the return just isn't going to be worth it.

Right now he isn't really helping this team very much, but he's probably not hurting it either.

by t ball on Oct 5, 2006 5:48 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Blalock
I would give him away, if someone would take him.

The odds of him being worth $11 million the next two seasons are very low.  If someone would take him and his contract, I would deal him immediately and cut the losses.

by BurntOrange on Oct 5, 2006 8:49 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I'd do that
3yrs/21mil on Padilla? I'd do that in a heart beat.

But...
What if you could get Pettitte at 3 / 27-30 OR Padilla at 3 / 21, but not both?  Still want Padilla?

by mjh on Oct 5, 2006 1:20 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Pettitte
Aren't you a bit concerned with his elbow?

by mdickson on Oct 5, 2006 1:28 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

answer to your earlier post
I'd be quite happy with Schmidt, concerned about Pettitte's durability a little bit, but I'd be happy with him as well.

My beef is with the people who have been saying we shouldn't even offer Padilla a contract, I'm just saying we need to make a competitive offer.  He is one of the better pitchers available this winter and has already shown he can pitch and eat innings here in Arlington.  The Rangers are going to have to pay someone a lot of money to come here, unless JD gets very creative in the trade market.

by t ball on Oct 5, 2006 1:35 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

addendum
I'll be happy with someone who can pitch 200 innings, and I think Padilla is as good a candidate as anyone to do that again.  Suppan might do that cheaper, anyone have any idea how much he'll command?

I have my doubts about Schmidt coming here, though he wanted to be on the west coast?

by t ball on Oct 5, 2006 1:39 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Suppan
I don't know how much he'll get in a contract, but I seriously doubt he leaves St. Louis.  The Cards will have four openings in their rotation, so they will be in search of pitching this winter.

by T Coleman on Oct 5, 2006 10:39 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I dunno
I'd like either of those deals, personally. I'd offer both and say it's first come, first serve.

Personally, I think Padilla's gonna get north of 8 million per season, easy. Anything less and his agent sucks. Too many teams need pitching, and he WILL be overpaid by someone. Simple as that.

Personally...
...I'd take Padilla.

I'm not a huge believer in Pettitte.

And he'd be 37 in the last year of a 3 year deal, while Padilla would just be 31.

by Adam J. Morris on Oct 5, 2006 6:34 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Why not both ? The payroll will............
obviously have to increase this year (GM,Jr? DeRo?, etc.), but also $10M drops off on Nevin (Chan Ho), Hairston's $2.3M and Barajas' $3.2 will most likely be replaced by Laird & Fast Freddie, a savings of nearly $5M more which is less than the increase for Padilla, also if Eaton is not brought back (I hope he is) that's another $4.5M........so hopefully, whether it's Petitte or someone else, the money will be there to pay it.

As an aside, will Petitte really get $10M per for 3-4 years ???

by tklawless on Oct 5, 2006 11:30 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Mike
Why don't you trust Padilla to repeat? This isn't the first year he's done it.

Also, do you really think we can land Pettitte for 3/27? That may be what he's worth, but I bet we'd have to go a good deal higher to get him here. And, are you saying you think we have even the remotest chance of landing Schmidt? I don't.

I'd say Millwood, Pettitte, and el Boracho could be a pretty solid playoff rotation, too.

If we could land those 2 at 3/27 and 3/21 respectively, like you mentioned, I feel pretty certain that the "player-specific" ceiling would rise to accomodate, don't you?

Padilla
If he can be signed for 3 years, $21 million, you have to do that.

We can't keep letting guys like Padilla, Rogers and Young leave for nothing.

padilla
also topped the charts in beaners thrown... Thats pretty cool.

Miguel Batista....
Would make a decent 4th starter at a reasonable price.

by doolindalton on Oct 5, 2006 10:17 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Or possibly a 5th........
in case none of the "kids" step up......I could live with him, but I'd prefer to see Danks get a shot......now !

by tklawless on Oct 5, 2006 11:34 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

ummm
I say forget Pettite.  I believe he is damaged goods at this point, and I wouldn't risk investing that kind of money in him.

I like Schmidt and bringing back Padilla.

I miss 1989. I miss 1996. Please make me miss another season in 2006.

we have no shot at Schmidt
