Something to stir the pot this weekend

A good article for nearly-anonymous people behind a computer wire to contribute to the arguments.

"Not outraged by Irvin's racist remarks? You should be"
http://cbs.sportsline.com/columns/story/9822797

I think the tone and point of the article is excellent.  Unfortunately, there seems to be very little anyone can do to affect the public reaction any differently.

Im not racist
But I know that black people are better athletes than white people plain and simple.

This is not a racist statement, this is a fact. Why do people get so bent out of shape over this. Im talking about my above statement, not about Irvin's remarks about taking a black slave into a barn, that might be flirting with the line a bit.

My two cents....
I think that maybe people get bent out of shape because if someone were to say that white people did any one thing better than black people, the sky would come crashing down with cries of "racist!".

Personally, I think comparisons based on race are idiotic to begin with.

I can see how
Mike Freeman could be highly offended by the comments.  Shoot, I grew up in a neighborhood that was about 50/50 in a 90/10 town.  Have heard everything possible that might be said.  Maybe I'm getting antiquated, but I tend to just dismiss all racial (slur, epithet, or poor taste joke) stuff and go on.  Only agitators from either point of view actually throw that stuff out any more, and some of them do it for effect.

I thought
the article was right on.  I agreed with every point except one.  I don't feel Irvin needs to be fired.  I take that stance because I have not liked how fast white commentators have been fired for putting their foot in their mouths.  We as a nation need to slow down and judge the man not the words.  The reasons for what is being said.  Michael Richards's words were filled with hate, but Limbaugh and Irvin were just being boneheaded.  They need to be admonished, they need to apologize and not do it again.  We are to quick to call people racists.  To quick to label.  To quick to say "you are this this and this and I am not listening."  I think the percentage of professional athletes that are african american is more of a result of poverty, interest and culture then it is result of some genetic difference.
