Adam Eaton gets lots of money

Bad news for Chris Martin...

The Phillies have signed Adam Eaton, giving him a pretty lucrative deal:

A source told ESPN The Magazine's Amy Nelson that Eaton will make $6.875 million in 2007, $7.635 million in '08, and $8.5 million in '09. He has a $1 million signing bonus and there is a $500,000 buyout of the mutual option for 2010. There are incentives clauses for each year, with $250,000 for 200 innings pitched, and an extra $250,000 if he surpasses 220 each year.

Okay, Phillies...good luck with all that...

At least they don't have to worry too much about having to pay out the $500K in innings pitched bonuses each year...

Padilla
Rangers gotta get a deal done with Padilla.  The Eaton deal is not far from what I thought the Rangers could offer.. wonder why they didn't even make a pitch to him.

Channeling Chris...
Because he sucks.

So..
The Phillies lose out on Soriano, Lee, resigning Wolf and go after Eaton? Doesn't make much sense. Neither does the money. I guess if he stays healthy he'll do well in Philly...if he stays healthy.

It makes
a lot more sense than chasing a bat with a ton of money for them.  They need pitching more than a bat, seems to me.

So if he duplicates his '06 numbers he's making over $500,000 per start.  Nice work if you can get it.

Phillies never make sense
Ricardo Rodriquez for Padilla
Delucci for Tejeda

Does this

Didn't want to play in BPiA
But is okay with the bandbox stadium in Philly?  I guess you throw enough money at someone....

Daniels should explain...
his rationale. I understand the new circumstances. But we just lost a good CF, LF, one SP (soon to be two SP's)??? Eaton is a risk alright. But every SP is somewhat of a risk? Certainly Bean-Ball Padilla brings extensive risk. Which is why I'm still voting for a complete Detroit-Tiger-like tear down. Bring the kids to the show, and and trade for some more. Millwood, TEX, and MY should bring plenty of beef.

Maybe I'm just tired of wire reports.

by 3Bagger on Nov 27, 2006 5:39 PM CST reply actions

A good CF, LF, on SP
I think that, coming into the offseason, the feeling was that GMJ might stick around, but Lee and Eaton were almost definitely gone.

And I wouldn't have wanted the Rangers to sign any of those three to the deals they got.

The Rangers swapped out the Cat for Lee.  I think that's an acceptable trade-off.

We just have to see what else happens.

The tiger
like tear down would be great, but we don't have the talent of pitchers to throw in the rotation.
Ruddy Yan- 2007 starting centerfielder for the Orioles...

Pitching prospects...
for TEX, Millwood, MY, Otsuka. Keep ALL the youth in the bull pen (hopefully some can jump to SP - a la Kenny Rogers). Arias starts at SS. Blalock stays (because he's cheaper), Cruz in right, find a better CF prospect (ex. the Dodgers need a big bat (TEX) and are loaded with arms and outfielders).

Draft soon-to-the-bigs type prospects in 2007 (using all these picks). Lower ticket prices.

Why wait on this? TEX and MY are very valuable in this whacky free agent market. We need Manny? Hello? Tex and MY and their attractive contract status should bring us some very good prospects. Since TEX is leaving anyway (most likely) then why wait for two picks for him? And since the emotions are running extra-high, why not work WITH IT? We could sucker-punch the market instead of losing Lee and adding Manny. We're not close enough for Manny to help.

My two cents.

by 3Bagger on Nov 27, 2006 6:40 PM CST up reply actions

Yikes
Tex will probably leave anyway?  Don't you want the Rangers to at least TRY to sign him?  By your logic, why rebuild?  The players we draft will all just leave eventually anyway.

by t ball on Nov 27, 2006 8:08 PM CST up reply actions

It works for...
Billy Beane? Zito walks? And all the rest. FA's who are offered big bucks occasionally sign in Texas. A-Rod. Chan-O. Millwood. It's a flawed long-term strategy for winning. After two more good-to-great years Tex might begin with 8 year $160 million?  Soriano money? A-Rod money?

Escalating salaries do not effect all teams the same. Boston and NY can make mistakes. If TEX continues to thrive, what team would not sign him? One first rounder lost? He's from the NE? He's got Yankees written all over him.

I'm not trying to be negative. But I want a system I can believe in. Let's double our scouts. Agressively sign draft picks. And bank on a consistent flow of youth. Let the money guys walk in 6 years. And never sign these franchise-killing-one-sided contracts.

To me, J D and crew are the perfect group to energetically start this long term appraoch.

I will quit posting this opinion now.

AL West very winnable
this year, just like '06.  The Rangers would be foolish to give in like that in a season when all 3 of the other teams are so middling.

Really, I think teams in the "upper middle-class" of the payroll range (or at least they should be) have to do both.  They have already been reordering and reprioritizing their scouting department.  They are collecting several draft picks for '07 by not overpaying to resign GMJ, DeRosa, Lee.  At the same time, they are signing players who can help at a reasonable contract level, probably exploring trades and additional signings to fill out the rotation.

With the draft picks they will have next year, they can start to buildup the farm system while also competing in the next two years with Teixeira and Young.  There is no reason they can't do both.  That's what great organizations do, and the Rangers have the resources to do that.

I hope...
things improve. I understand the contract realities. But when you take 2006 Stats for Lee, GMJ, De Rosa, Padilla, Eaton, etc, then look at what's "out there" ??? I see a talent drain.

I agree with you: CAT's contract is better than LEE's. But if both cost $13 million? Then Lee's a no-brainer! So. I'm hoping JD delivers with some shrewd-salary manifesto. But JD's best moves  last year seemed to be Padilla (one year rental) and Koronka-Rheino, two guys who may not pitch in the MLB in 2007. Last year (granted it was January) but...this team seemed to have some REAL upside.

(BTW. Adam you do a terrific job with this site).

This puts a bow on the goatf#ck
So we gave up ML starting pitching and an ML quality 1B for a closer?

Good times.

I am sad
I was so hoping he would go to Seattle.

by LoneStarBallUser on Nov 27, 2006 7:03 PM CST reply actions

By my rough estimate...
Teams have guaranteed about $193 million to Lee, Matthews, DeRosa, Barajas and Eaton.

Good times.

by Lucas on Nov 27, 2006 7:18 PM CST reply actions

Damn
How were the Rangers not any better last year with all that talent?

by LoneStarBallUser on Nov 27, 2006 7:27 PM CST up reply actions

Funny
I think it's funny how so many fans are mad at the team for not spending gobs of money to overpay players that were here cheaply last year.  Isn't that exactly what the team should be doing?

by t ball on Nov 27, 2006 8:10 PM CST up reply actions

Who is mad?
Certainly not me.  The only one of those players who I would even remotely want at the price they signed for was DeRosa.  I have no problem with the rest of them not being signed.

by LoneStarBallUser on Nov 28, 2006 6:01 AM CST up reply actions

I was agreeing with you
Sorry, didn't make that clear, I thought what you wrote was funny, and I agree with you.

by t ball on Nov 28, 2006 6:12 AM CST up reply actions

It is kinda interesting how much more value
these other teams have put on "our" players. We couldn't come close to winning with them (at a helluva lot lower payroll) What are the chances they put their new teams over the top ?

Scouts LOVED Eaton...
...for a long time, and apparently Philadelphia's still do.

Eaton
Before he went down with T-J surgery in 2001, he was viewed as a guy who was the Padres' future #1.

And stabilize, it's just one more name for the 'critics' to raise in the "why didn't we" post debates.

So
anyone think we should offer to take Leiber off their hands? He seems like a good candidate for a Vincente Padilla Contract Year Bounceback.

by FirebatM3 on Nov 27, 2006 7:33 PM CST reply actions

I'm glad
that the Rangers are supposedly saving all this money by not outrageous sums to keep guys like Eaton, Matthews, DeRosa, Barajas and Lee around...but, to be honest, I'm not that confident Hicks and co. will put it to good use elsewhere, so I'm really not sure what to think about this offseason.

by Alan Smithee on Nov 28, 2006 1:40 AM CST reply actions

I am biting my nails
...is what I am doing. Patience is not one of my virtues as it is, but I am anxious to see what the "big cheese" and his cohorts will come up with this off season. I am worried about the catcher, and starting pitching. The Rangers may be saving money, but they better be prepared to use some of it on some real talent. Ranger fans are getting tired of the same ol' same old story year after year.
