J.D Drew?

"Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder J.D. Drew opted out of the final three years of his contract Thursday, making him an unrestricted free agent."

Boras is his agent.  He's a lefty power hitter and an outfielder, both needs for the Rangers.  He's an injury risk, obviously, but when he plays, he's usually outstanding.

What might it cost to get him in Texas?

Drew
No idea what it would cost, but I'd be on board for at least kicking the tires. A left-handed power hitter with excellent plate discipline is always welcome in Ameriquest.

I'd be up for taking a look at Moises Alou as well. Neither he nor Drew are the best risks health-wise, but they can both still hit.

I am not sure
he is getting the best advice from his representation (I won't speak his name).    Do you really want to chunk a 3 year promise when you are known to be injury proned?  This contract was signed after his career year with the Braves.  His numbers were up this year from 05, but they were back to the 04 level.  Can he really justfy to anybody getting paid more than he did when he has only done less?

probably not
which might be why this is the perfect opportunity to try and sign him.  I can't imagine he'll get another contract like the one he signed two years ago.

Arizona???
Maybe he wants to play on the same team as his brother?  Maybe he hated playing or living in LA?  I have heard that he is an extremely religious individual.  LA might not have fit his lifestyle. Evidently there are some players that consider living and playing conditions more than money...which is nice to see.

he is a devout christian
so, presumably, he'd fit in just fine in Texas.  I have to think that the LA atmosphere was the reason he opted out.  It can't have been money, and LA was a playoff team.

J.D has always seemed to dance to the beat of his own drum...

Drew
He opted out because he'll get more money than the 3 years, $33 million he was due.

you think?
I suppose, with Boras, anything's possible, but that seems like a lot for a guy with his health history.

by Alan Smithee on Nov 9, 2006 8:26 PM CST up reply actions

Yes
He's better than Soriano and Lee.

I bet he gets something like 4 years, $55 million.

Well, I agree
that he's better(historically, at least), but that doesn't mean he'll get more.

I love Drew
Would love to have him here. He'd be great in either LF or RF in Arlington and he'd hit lights out.

Obviously he's (& Boras) expecting
well more than 3/$33 as thats what he had coming in LA.......and I never saw any report that he wasn't happy there....so this is Boras deciding this year is better to be free than next (because the $$$ is available & Hunter & Wells are free next year).....I'm guessing 4/$50 or in that neighborhood.
