Interesting McCarthy article...

...from the White Sox official website.  Interestingly enough, it was posted online about an hour and a half before the trade was announced.

http://chicago.whitesox.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/news/article.jsp?ymd=20061220&content_id=1765276& vkey=news_cws&fext=.jsp&c_id=cws

I'm not sure what to think of the trade, as I really like Danks and Masset, but this article will give everybody some insight into who McCarthy is...

Probably not too bad a comp.......
doesn't throw quite as hard but, has a better hook

mccarthy
has a better curveball than Verlander?  I don't think so.

changeup
his changeup is what makes him a 10+ SO/9 guy, but the curve is supposed to be pretty good as well. It's his fastball that is supposedly pretty straight

Damn
I hope we dont have to face him to many times again next year....

Oh wait, HES ON OUR TEAM NOW.

McCarthy
Chris Young minus 80 pounds?

If he can fill out and pitch in the mid nineties he may be better than Chris.

Last off season I doubt the White Sox
would have traded McCarthy straight up for Chris Young.....and while he had a nice season in SD, that place is probably the most extreme pitcher's park in the Majors.

the only
thing i don't like about this deal is Danks left

Wah!
You act like he was the savior of the franchise or something.

I don't like Danks leaving either
but I'm happy with this trade, would have liked more but I don't think we're losing out.

He has some hotties
On lockdown in Chicago, we will need to replace those, stat.

It's not the trade that I envisioned
would involve Danks.

I think the Rangers got the best player in this trade, though.  That's not a knock on Danks.

Is Mccarthey
more of a flyball pitcher or a groundball pitcher?

by myoungfan11 on Dec 23, 2006 4:41 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

FB pitcher
38% of balls in play by McCarthy were GB.  Compare to Millwood (45%), Webb (65%), and Chris Young (25%-30%).

But, a fairly hefty percentage of his fly balls are IF.  His IF/F percentage (14%) is comparable to Zito's this year (13%), and Chris Young's career mark (14%-15%).

I'm still stunned by the trade.  I really thought a trade of Danks would bring back someone who is already near the top of a rotation rather than someone who has the potential to become that.  But, I think the Rangers got the pitcher with the best stuff in this deal.  I would much rather have McCarthy than Vazquez or Garland.  I would've taken Buehrle over McCarthy, though.

Why
he has only 1 year in his contract left

by myoungfan11 on Dec 23, 2006 5:47 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, but he could step into the #1 slot.
He has proven as durable as Zito.  He throws ground balls.

Actually, this trade for McCarthy is about what I hoped the Rangers would do for Bonderman.  McCarthy isn't far behind Bonderman on the developmental curve, and his upside is about the same.  I feel good about what the Rangers got, but I'm bummed about losing Danks.

by rooster on Dec 23, 2006 11:08 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah
i am too but now lets go get mulder or zito

Something I haven't seen mentioned
but might be big is McCarthy getting out from under Ozzie & Washington's positive attitude.....that kind of stuff can be huge, especially for a young guy.
