Huge Potential Deal

Yesterday, Will Carroll said that a huge trade was about to go down and thought it was so close  he didn't want to mention any names for fear of jinxing it. Today, he finally decided to throw out some names. I didn't expect any ranger to be a part of it, but as you can guess, he mentions teixeira as POTENTIALLY part of the deal. I don't see how trading him would help, our offense being what it is, but seeing as I have no idea what the return would be, I will just trust in JD for the time being. Discuss.

If he thinks it involves Teixeira,
he's wrong.  The Rangers would certainly be interested in Andruw.  They have bullpen arms that could be dealt, but I don't see prime ML property going to the Braves from the Rangers.  The best I could imagine for the Braves would be Otuska and Wilkerson and a low minor leaguer.

It isn't a two team deal. It's multiple teams.

trade
not for a left-handed hitting replacement for Tex, an impact offensive CF and a pitching prospect?

No way
A six team deal including some (if not all) of Andruw Jones, Tim Hudson, Dontrelle Willis, Rocco Baldelli, Mark Teixeira, Curtis Granderson and a lot of others will never happen. Too complex.

I'm not a proponent of trading Tex, but I'm glad JD seems to be at least listening to offers on him. If somebody wants to blow you away, let them.

Won't Happen
A 6 Team deal? All it takes is 1 team to feel it isn't getting back a nice return, and you have a problem.  If they couldn't get a 3 Team trade done, I can't see a 6 team trade.  And all trading Tex will do is open a hole in our lineup.  I'm choosing to ignore this.

Why are you all assuming a 6 team deal?
He said 6 teams were in discussion, then later in the paragraph mentions a three team deal, etc.  I don't see how that meant there was a potential six team deal.  Seemed more like two teams (Atlanta and ?) were trying to figure out a 3rd team to help a deal get done.

I don't see how dealing this team's primary offensive threat makes the team better.  I hope there's nothing to this.

If we traded Teixeira without getting a big bat in
return, we would finish dead last in the AL West.

The offense isn't great right now and it would be flat out awful without Teixeira.

"but ur worshiping"?
Maybe in the future when you rip on someones spelling you should take the time to spell out all the words.  Kidding with I thought your post was funny.  I misspell player names all the time, but how many spellings of Willis are there.  I mean "Wills" doesn't even have enough syllables.

As far as getting Willis, I don't know if we want his recent run-ins with the law to influence the players (Padilla and Blalock) that have so far only been rumored to party hard.  Then again, we could use him at DH on his days off.  How many homeruns would he hit with our short porch in right?

I may not be a baseball GM, but I am a thinker. (a play on a Glenn Beck catch phrase)

Tex Trade
I'm totally against it.

The only way I would pull the trigger with the Braves would be for LaRoche, Jones, and their top pitching prospect for Teixeira and Hurley. This will never happen, but it would ease the pain of losing Tex.

by Allen13 on Dec 26, 2006 4:43 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

What about...
just thinking out loud...

Tex and Aki for Jones, Hudson and LaRoche?

That'd open up some salary for the Braves while shoring up some needs (closer, cleanup hitter), give us another starter (albiet one with red flags), a big bat to hit cleanup (albiet one who can walk at the end of the year), and a good young first baseman.

That deal is never going to happen, but, in theory, I'd probably do that.

Would y'all?

If Jones could be signed to an extension
then I'd do that deal. Don't care if Hudson is in the deal really. I'm not as sold as Adam is on Tex being "untouchable" but I'd only trade him for an "impact" player(s), not prospects (no matter how good, Andy Marte couldn't miss).

TEX
So the Rangers would be terrible without TEX?  I guess the Rangers had a much better record in the second half once Tex started hitting? UMMMMMMM, that didnt happen.  Tex is the Rangers very own Antoine Walker.  Talk about needing to put the annointing oil away.  The Rangers have so many GREAT players that its all they can can do to stay out of last place.  I personally hope Tex is traded while he still is thought of so highly.  A couple more 1st halfs like the last two and his value will be severely reduced.  Then the Rangers would prob. re-sign him, great.  If the Rangers arent going to pay their top talent they need to start moving the pieces when they are at their peak, and certainly never let them just walk via free agency.

by rkh on Dec 26, 2006 7:43 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

His last two first halves?
First half of 2006 was not good...

But Teixeira hit .290/.362/.568 in the first half of 2005.

As for the "so many GREAT players" comment, the Rangers only have two players who could be reasonably described as great -- Teixeira and Young.

HOF #'s indeed.  Maybe something in the neighborhood of 10/$250mil is in order.  I guess Antoine Walker does have a ring......maybe his numbers aren't empty after all. (im standing in a puddle of my own sarcasm).

If Hudson and Jones
are healthy, I would do the above trade.

by kumar75150 on Dec 26, 2006 6:35 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

I don't see how that makes any sense
I struggle to see a deal involving Teixeira and the Braves that makes any sense.  If they want to salary dump Hudson, I would be interested, although not for a huge price as there's a good bit of risk there.

That said, this thread does include the ever so popular "just trust in JD" comment, and Adam's ever so present "no Teixeira trades", regardless of the return....

It is pure specualtion
coming from one name in a column of rumors.  We are just desparate for baseball we all need to vent on something! :)

As for me I would trade Tex and play Botts at 1B IF we could add Jones, and Willis or Hudson.  The Rangers need another starter for thier rotation and the options are few.  Jones is solid at the plate and in the field plus Botts could play 1B.

I know this is  all just speculation but its better than taking back Christmas gifts that I did not want.

Three Team Trade
The trade is speculated to be:

M. Cabrera to Atlanta with a Pirates throw in
Mike Gonzales to the Yankees
Andy LaRoche to the Pirates

Other sources say the Angels may be involved.

Oh he is, certainly
But he's begun to head in a Dwight Gooden direction off-field.  (My opinion, no substantiation available).

The occasional or seldom reported DUI's, the refreshing smile and demeanor that belie (?? who knows what).  Add that to the notion that he'll draw a very long term at significant coin in the new baseball market, and you have a cocktail for self demolition.

Yeah, I know.  Not likely.  Give it three years and tell me if I'm wrong.

x
Your love affair with Teixeira has gone on long enough.

by hiafex on Dec 27, 2006 5:21 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Why?
Because I'd rather have him than Willis?

Teixeira is a better player.  He's two years away from free agency, but Willis is three years away from free agency.

And I tend to question how successful he'll continue to be.  22nd in the N.L. last year in K/BB ratio, 21st in K/9, 6th in the N.L. in walks.

A young pitcher with peripherals like that generally has a difficult time sustaining his success.

Also, at this point, I don't see how trading hitting for starting pitching makes much sense anyway.  Trading Teixeira creates a pretty huge hole in the middle of the lineup.

Anyway, this position on Willis isn't anything new, or particular to him...I said before last season that I wouldn't trade Ian Kinsler straight up for Dontrelle Willis.

by Adam J. Morris on Dec 27, 2006 7:19 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Well
You seem convinced that Botts can hit at the major league level and this trade may be the only way you get to see him in the lineup every day.

Hell, he's younger than LSBs own CJ Wilson by a year or so. There is gonna be some adjustments in his game yet.

Looking at our team now
we really need more bats than we do arms.  Our bullpen is solid, and our pitching isnt in as bad of shape as our lineup is.

This is pretty obvious...
<quote>The three team deal that seemed close over the weekend doesn't seem so close now as the complexity has increased. Remember that John Schuerholz is normally a slow worker, so quiet on this front doesn't mean that nothing is happening.
</quote>

Facts:

  1. The Braves are involved.
  2. The "complexity has increased..." = the Texas / ChiSox trade, meaning one of those teams has to be involved.  (I'm guessing it's Texas)
Guess:
I'd have to guess that there are some names involved like Tex, Otsuka, LaRoche, Chuck James, Andruw Jones, Tim Hudson...from the Texas and Braves camps, with a 3rd team trying to get involved (Tampa Bay, Pitt, Baltimore).

Would Texas be willing to give up Tex, Otsuka and Wilkerson if they were getting LaRoche, Jones and Hudson in return?  I assume that the Braves would also get a CF-type along with another MR and an SP.  I assume the Pirates could get involved offering Ollie Perez and Mike Gonzalez if they were getting Chuck James back in the deal.  There's obviously more involved in that scenario, but it sure would be interesting.

Millwood, Hudson, Padilla, BMAC, Tejeda

Lofton (CF), Cat (LF), Young (SS), Jones (DH), Blalock (3B), LaRoche (1B), Cruz (RF), Kinsler (2B), Laird (C)

Sorry...
I posted in a hurry because I'm at work.  When doing the lineup, I was thinking Chipper Jones, not Andruw.  I meant Andruw, and he would obviously be the CF.

I'm not advocating the trade at all, I'm just wondering if there isn't something in the works that is along those lines.  I definitely believe that there would have to be more (and/or different) pieces involved for a deal to be made.

Yep, screwed up on Perez.  I guess you could throw Malholm into that discussion, since his name has been mentioned before.

In any case, I could see the Braves going after Tex as there have been rumors before.  It will be interesting to see if anything happens there.
