Dave Cameron on the best and worst f.a. signings
U.S.S. Mariner's Dave Cameron offers his top 10 lists, with the 10 best and 10 worst f.a. signings this offseason...
None of the Ranger signings crack either list, although the Cat gets honorable mention under the best signings.
Dumpmaster D is rated the 9th best signing of the offseason, while Carlos Lee, GMJ, and Alfonso Soriano ranked #1, #4 and #5 on the worst signings list.

Not sure
Cat
He fills a role and a need. His contract is reasonable.
And if Botts and Cruz both hit well enough to count on them as full-time starters in 2008, then this coming offseason, you can probably trade Cat for a return equivalent to the pick you lost.
If they don't, then you've got a guy who is still going to be a necessary part of the 2008 team, and maybe the 2009 team.

Heh
I wonder if Woody Williams is truly one of the 10 worst signings? I know his performance was aided by playing in SD, he's 40, and he was injured last year. But it's only two years at $6 mill per. I don't know who I'd put in there instead of him.
As much criticism as the Sori
40/40
Plus, he doesn't have a "track record" of producing 40/40 seasons. He's had one.

40/40
That's all it means. 40/40 seasons aren't created equal, and saying somebody's a "40/40" guy doesn't necessarily mean that a "30/30" guy isn't a better player.
It's still an impressive feat.

Nothing's imaginary about 40/40
Using 40/40 as a talking point frames his argument nicely, but I prefer context. It sounds like we're in agreement on this. I just don't like seeing 40/40 without anything around it.
And he's still only had one 40/40 season.
