Not surprisingly, the Oracle hates it.

"Paying this much retail for nearly a decade of Barry Zito, for the Giants, is about as practical as paying $900 for a PlayStation 3 on eBay to give to Ariel Sharon for his birthday."

Hey z
Now that Adam is in the fold, it's time for you to do blockquotes as well:

Come to think of it, there used to be a program a long time ago that would allow you to assign a keystroke to make text.  You could assign the block quote text to the F1 key or whatever.

Is there a similar program out there now?

well...
...I agree that it's too much copying & pasting.  What we really need is a WYSIWYG editor.  I think you suggested that a while back, no?  But until we have that, we're stuck with this interface.

If you were on a Mac, it would be super easy to assign a keystroke.  I don't know of any application for Windows, though...

That sounds like it
I'm not going to pay $30 bucks for it, though.  The one I had before was freeware, but I can't seem to find anything like that now.  And, of course, since I remembered the program I can suddenly think of hundreds of uses for it.  Dammit.

where I used to work
they got suckered into paying a guy $2,000 for him to write a script for use with a free program called SuperKeys that did what I think you're talking about.

http://www.vellosoft.com/SuperKeys/sk1.html

What was really great was that the script he wrote to use it, didn't work and I ended up having to rewrite it all.

That's awesome
I think it's going to work.  Everybody should have a program like that (in fact, Windows should come with it).

dating back to Windows 3.11
I think there was a windows utility called Macro Recorder that essentially did the same thing.  I don't think it made the transition to Windows 95 and was lost in the sands of time.

Probably a good thing though, I can see the virtually endless possibilities for viruses to exploit a program like that.

viruses
Do you think that SuperKeys thing is safe?

as far as I know it's clean
however, the way the program works is by sitting in memory waiting to see if you hit the trigger key.  So in essence its a keystroke logger like some viruses.

I remember one day at work Norton Anti-Virus decided all of a sudden that one of the DLL files was a virus and it threw a fit.  The DLL file itself is fine, its just that some l33t 4ax0rs could use it to build a keystroke logging virus.

If you were worried about it, you could always turn the program off anytime you were shopping online or entering bank account numbers, SSN, etc.

Maybe so
The thing that bothers me about the block quotes is that they take over the entire post.  I feel like someone is screaming at me like when people use all caps.

Well, if you're paying Matt Cain the league min.
I guess you gotta pay SOMEONE ace money.

This might be one case in which the media would say they overpaid because they outbid the Rangers.

To give the Giants a fleck of a bone... they do have a nice young rotation in Cain, Zito, Lowry with Lincecum on the way.  Morris is a good #4.  One of Hennesey or Correia can handle #5.

by rooster on Dec 28, 2006 1:21 PM CST reply actions

Their rotation
is going to be great. Cain and Lincecum looks like top of the rotation starters, and Lowry is very solid. Plus, as you said, toss Morris in there.

On the other hand, they basically have to come up with an entire lineup going forward.

Linceum
hasn't he been pitching out of the pen?

by FirebatM3 on Dec 28, 2006 2:27 PM CST up reply actions

Not that I'm aware of
All eight of his pro appearances were starts. I could see the Giants maybe starting him out in the pen, with the starting depth that they now have, and with how dominant he'd probably be. But I haven't heard any of that of late.

Many people suggested that he would have to move to the pen because of his size, delivery and I guess lack of a third pitch, but that talk has seemingly subsided. And as the summer/fall went on, his status grew. I've seen guys like Will Carroll and Jim Callis (and Callis wasn't necessarily a huge fan of his previously) say some pretty outlandish stuff.

For now, I think he's a top, top starting prospect.

by Brett Perryman on Dec 28, 2006 3:15 PM CST up reply actions

It's a crime
what the management has done to that team considering the pitching strength they have.  What a waste.

by t ball on Dec 28, 2006 9:20 PM CST up reply actions

Just to specify
In addition to comments those guys have had on Lincecum, Callis said yesterday that he ranks Lincecum as the 10th best prospect in baseball and the best starting pitcher prospect after Matsuzaka, Philip Hughes and Homer Bailey. That's something. FWIW, he has Andrew Miller #11.

They're going to need to deal Jonathan Sanchez or Lowry or someone like that for a bat eventually. Maybe they can get something for Morris.

most depressing stat for us non-millionaires
"At an optimistic rate of 35 starts per year with 100 pitches per start, the Giants will be paying him over $5,000 per pitch for seven years. Think about that next time you watch him pitch."

Actually, that probably pretty depressing for Mr. Magowan (sp.?), if he were to think on it...

Penalty Box? DONT THINK SO!!!!!!! And i wish everyone could stop writing that crap cause its gay...SUPER GAY!!!! NYTXfan!!!
