Lorrie Masset on The Trade

I know a lot of you guys read the NMLR forums...

But for those of you who don't, I'd encourage you to read this post from Lorrie Masset, the mother of Nick Masset, talking about her feelings about The Trade and the impact it had on her and the Masset family.

I think
that this could be really good for Masset. If you look at what Don Cooper has done for guys like Bobby Jenks and Matt Thornton, among several others, he could be just what Masset needs to become a top pitcher. Masset has a great arm and quality stuff, but, this winter notwithstanding, hasn't had the command necessary to put up numbers representative of that. That guy could help to turn him into a monster.

by Brett Perryman on Dec 28, 2006 3:27 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Z
I think you are right.  Masset goes from a guy trying to solidify himself to a guy they traded for.  I think that in itself will allow him more opportunities, and he doesn't start with history essentially.  He can start from this day forward, and he has shown to be pretty solid over the last 1 - 1 1/2 years.  I think Nick might end up being a big part of this deal in the end

Imagine a T.O. apologist ...
... on crack with an attitude problem; swap out Buck/Hart for T.O. and add in some wacky man-love for anything pro-management; then imagine a guy with an "angry at the world" temperment in constant attendence on his keyboard looking to pick a fight over the most petty of details; add in a ton of "..." to the posts--that's Wuf.

Good description.
There are a lot of great posters over there, but I got tired of having to put up with the two or three crazy ones who made it a point to start a fight/argument in every single thread that they posted on. I won't name names, but those of you who have read the boards over the last year or two know who I'm talking about.

Did he have any brains to him, or was he more the 4 exclamation point type? And what do you mean pro-management? He was a Hart/Hicks apologist?

This guy must have been bad, if he was so toxic you couldn't just ignore him...

Well, according to him
...he's "a millionare" and a huge business success, and a quality professional player, so he had that going for him, which was nice.

As far as the toxicity, his posting frequency was amazing. If you think some of us are bad, you should see how he could litter a board.

by Brett Perryman on Dec 28, 2006 5:27 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

He was pretty bad....
To answer your questions:
Did he have any brains to him, or was he more the 4 exclamation point type?

He did have brains. That was the frustrating part. Once he came to a opinion about something, everything else which might be contradictory to that  opinion he would totally ignore.

So while, there were times that he agreed with us, you would remember the times where he disagreed, because no logic or additional evidence could sway him.

Basically, he was like a more astute-Sharky (though not a caricature).

And what do you mean pro-management? He was a Hart/Hicks apologist?

Essentially, yes. Everything that they did, he would get behind (or at least that's what he'd say publicly). Only time he would change his opinion is when they decided to cut bait with those players (Drese, Diaz, Chris Young, etc.).

His retort was always "Well, management has WAY more information than you, so therefore, they must be right."

This guy must have been bad, if he was so toxic you couldn't just ignore him...

He was pretty bad, because 1) You couldn't get any real enlightenment from him, 2) he'd be very confrontational about his opinions, and 3) he didn't provide any humor.

Most people in my ignore-set only fulfill 2 or 2 1/2 qualities. He made all 3.

I don't think block quotes should be used in every scenario, but especially when you're quoting another article or poster, it helps differentiate in a way that italics or simple quotation marks can't.

I don't harbor resentment....
When someone continues to assume the worst of you, blatantly states that their assumption of you is fact, and refuses to give in or accept that they're wrong, well, I don't see the point in continuing the conversation.

I have enough problem in everyday life, why should I subject myself to that behavior on a message board?

Basically, I gave him chances to admit some fault, he didn't and continued to persist in his assumptions and behaviors, so I decided it wasn't worth the time to continue to communicate with him.

It's definitely made my life much easier on this message board.

It's simple for me. If you're going to make it difficult to communicate with and you persist in doing it, I'm not going to take the time and effort to try to establish that communication and connection.

For example, on the old ESPN message board, I used to get into these long arguments (along with Adam, zywica, Cahill, etc.) with wufdog about various Rangers' topics. After a while, I realized that he wasn't going to change his behavior to make him more amenable to discussing issues. So, I decided it wasn't worth the effort.

It's also why I didn't understand why Adam would go out of his way to address a point that Sharky brought up. Most of the time, Sharky's going to ignore your comment and post some random defense, and even he does rebut it, it usually don't make much sense. Adam persisted in doing that, though, even though he'd get no real feedback from Sharky.

I guess Adam's just a glutton for punishment.

You take me way too seriously, man.  Do I still call you condescending?  Nah.  The above comment isn't a serious one, obviously.  I was poking fun at the situation to highlight that the whole thing was stupid (yeah, on my part).

It's just the internet.  I don't think I've done anything so vile as to require a formal apology.  In fact, on the internets, I think I would only apologize if I'd called a smart person stupid, or in the heat of the moment implied someone was dishonest or something.  I don't think I said anything like that to you.  If I did, well, I am sorry because that really would've been out of line.  Other than that, you'll have to consider my admission that the whole thing was stupid as some form of capitulation, because that's what it is.

Have fun.

Imagine...
if you will, you had formed an opinion, and, with a desire to share this opinion, through the joys of the Internet, people reading your opinion agreed with you in a way where they too were vocal about this same opinion.

Now, imagine someone deciding, that while they claimed this was a well reasoned opinion, that they would play devil's advocate to this opinion, blurring the lines of sanity or brevity at every turn to debate this opinion simply because it was popular among a large faction of people.

Take that idea in your head, make it a million times more annoying and self important and you have the pariah known only as Wufdog.

one other thing that set wuf apart
His experience in the St. Louis Cardinals minor league organization and his subsequent success as a businessman made him more qualified to answer any baseball question than you or me.  Such justifications were used to tell us why modern day statistics meant nothing, Barajas was a better choice for catcher than Laird, and the best (which only appeared on the NMLR board), how methamphetamines are neither harmful nor help ballplayers because he had personally tried them with no effect.

by ab03 on Dec 28, 2006 6:18 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Also...
...if you suggested (prior to July, 2004) that there was a power struggle going on in the organization between Buck and elements in the front office (particularly Grady Fuson), or if you thought Buck was working behind the scenes to force Fuson out, you were a tin-foil-hat wearing conspiracy theorist.

And you shouldn't listen to anything any writer said about anything, because they make up sources and are just trying to sell papers.

And Buck's reputation as a control freak, and the idea that players didn't like him, was a fiction that was manufactured by Randy Galloway and Gerry Fraley, and any national writer who said that about Buck was just repeating what Galloway or Fraley told them.

by Adam J. Morris on Dec 28, 2006 6:31 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

what!
He really said that about amphetamines?  That. Is. Hilarious.

As someone who used to party with Adderall and Dexedrine, I can say, unequivocally, that they pump you up like nothing else.  Even slamming six Red Bulls won't get your heart racing remotely close to the way meth--prescription or otherwise--can.

The only exception I've read about is with people who are extreme ADD cases.  Then, the pills have the opposite chemical effect.  Maybe this poster you're talking about was just serious ADD...

The problem is that if you're devoted to a search for truth and DISCUSSION rather than argumentation, there's got to be give and take.

You can't just have one side unwilling to bend the littlest bit just because he wants to make a point (or because he imagines he's right all the time).

Oh yeah, that's another problem with wufdog, he refused to admit that he even had the CHANCE of the possibility of being wrong (at least in an argument).

If you can't even admit when you've been human (i.e., wrong or erring), how can you learn from that and how can anyone else learn from any dialogue with you?

It's not only that he's a jerk, but he's the type of jerk who likes to rub it in your face when he's right. That whole "I'm going to go on and on and on about how I was right about Soriano" thing last year made me want to give him multiple virtual punches in the face. Top offender
I'm pretty laid back most of the time, can communicate without clicking with wuf and VII/Newbie.  Lately there is a snert who repeatedly shows up via reregistration even though Eleanor has kicked him offline a couple of times.  I have no clue why he even posts on a Rangers' journal, forum, or board.  Most of his input is contrived sharply personal insults or abasement of other posters.  Not just the 'different sides, heat of the argument' type, but really low and offensive stuff.  His ID was SteveP/Anis and another I can't recall. Apparently the board software doesn't support IP and Mask bans, as all it takes to return is use a valid email address and make a new registration.

Having been a moderator (not such a good one, either) for a while, I've learned that sooner or later the admin for the board needs tools that probably are not readily available.

I think they morphed into that, but I think they originated to point out other ESPN team board trade proposals.  The height of the bad ones was when we had two 3rd basemen in the minors, and we just had to trade one of them.  Someone would find Blaylock or Teixeira trade proposals every day.

A Mets boardie would offer their 38 year old 5th starter for "Batlak" with the reasoning that "Texas needs pitching, and they can't play them both at 3rd!"

Was it tlt that created gotd?  I think he has it copyrighted.

Rangers fix.  I read Jamey's e-mails, which are very good sources of info and I like Mike's updates (if not the extra stuff), but I've pretty much quit going to the NMLR boards.  I got sick of all the toadies that would jump on anybody that dared to disagree with Jamey or Mike on any point.  They couldn't just say, "I agree with Mike or Jamey and here's why."  It was always, "How dare you belittle what Jamey and Mike do!  You're not just disagreeing with them, you're personally attacking them and that is sorry considering what they provide you free of charge!"  Given that my opinions of Buck/Hart were never very favorable, and given Jamey's and Mike's (most of the time) propensity for never saying anything negative about either of those two, I didn't tend to agree with them on many issues touching on management.  The "you're attacking them personally" crap got to be such a constant beat-down that I finally decided it wasn't worth the headache.

That defensiveness is silly
What person with a rational mind thinks Jamey does all that so that everyone can agree with everything he says?

Well,
if you read some of Mike's outbursts in the past, you get the feeling he doesn't particularly want to be disagreed with.

Head to Jamey's board
I'm pretty sure I saw a post from him fairly recently when I went by there.

Yeah, just go to Jamey's board
and call him out for a postdown!  At noon, 20 paces, mouse at the ready.  Just realize, the best lawyer in the world can't argue with a fencepost and win.
