Orioles close to signing Aubrey Huff

Ken Rosenthal is reporting that the Orioles are close to signing Aubrey Huff to a 3 year, $18 million deal.

Huff was one of the more underrated players in the game for a while, and has now gotten overrated because of the decline in his offensive skills combined with the publicity he's gotten for being underrated.

Didn't really have much interest in the Rangers pursuing him.  This isn't that bad a contract, I guess, all in all.

Update [2006-12-30 19:6:23 by Adam J. Morris]: -- ESPN now says it is 3 years, $20 million.

Why would we have had any interest at this point?  Platoon with Cruz in RF?

Doesn't look like it's going to happen in any event, though.

Could be innacurate
Agents love creating competition by throwing out suitors that don't exist.  Sadly, it seems to work.

Not at this point
I think Cruz deserves a chance to play everyday.  Plus despite the criticism I have recieved on other posts I don't like throwing money at marginal players.  Huff could be great or a dud and he was last season.  Save that money until something better comes along.

WOW
You advocate spending a gozillion dollars for Soriano but Huff is a marginal player who is coming off a dud season?  Take away the missed games, and that dud season is better than both of the years Soriano had while in a Rangers uniform.
I got a fever and the only prescription is more blockquotes!

to be fair
my year was better than Brad Wilkerson's.  And I haven't touched a glove since the company softball team disbanded.

Your Wilkerson comment
Made me remember this from a game day thread in August.

jeez
He only went 0-4 with 3 strikeouts and a sac fly.

Tough crowd.

Ouch
Now tell us what you really think!  :)

I'd rather have....
Craig Wilson over Huff.

Mainly because 1) if they have the same BA, Wilson will likely be the better player, and 2) Wilson will be much cheaper than Huff.

OTOH, Huff DOES have the potential to be a .300 hitter (even though he hasn't shown it in 2 years).

I just think those years might be behind him.
