Mike Maroth for Mahay or Wilson???

One team that may have a surplus of starters that's not getting a lot of press for it is the Tigers. Dave Dombrowski carefully seemed to indicate that 29 year-old southpaw starter Mike Maroth could be available.

Maroth pitches to contact and could be decent in front of a good defense.  He only makes about $3 mil and has two seasons left before free agency.  He'd probably come a lot cheaper than Kei Igawa, who might be comparable.  Maroth had surgery in June to remove bone chips in his elbow.  He wasn't quite right upon his September return and didn't make the postseason roster.

As far as lefty relievers go, Dombrowski chatted with Florida about Renyel Pinto.  They also might like C.J. Wilson and Ron Mahay of Texas.

Pasted from mlbtraderumors.com.

Wilson is not considerably younger than Maroth
but he definitely has better stuff.

I would do Mahay for Maroth, but certainly not Wilson for Maroth.

Exactly right
and maybe that was one point for resigning Mahay.

this would
be a nice rotation

1 zito

2 millwood

3 padilla

4 maroth

5 tejada

Not to nitpick...
...but it's Tejeda.  Gotta differentiate between the roider in Baltimore and the young Ranger stud pitcher.

True
Tejeda > Tejada.
Jon Miller says Vicente Padilla with a thick accent.

hahaha
Just saw your sig.  Miller does all the latino players with as authentic a spanish accent as he can muster.  He definitely prides himself on that.  It mostly just makes me chuckle.

Listening to baseball out here in SF has really been a treat.  The Giants radio and tv crews are so phenomenal...

I wouldn't
I like Wilson and think his ceiling is higher than Maroth's, but I wouldn't be too mad if we did that deal. Until last year's injury plagued year Maroth was actually a pretty decent innings eater, and you can never have too many of those.

Here are his stats in case anyone wants to see.

I'd def consider it...
Maroth isn't a great starter, but at the bottom of a rotation isn't a bad option at all.  Mahay I think I'd do in a heartbeat, Wilson I'd think twice about but think I might do also.

Maroth
Is approaching 30.  His surgery was not career threatening (bone chips around his elbow) but for some reason his 60-day DL took 90 days.  He is a career 1.40+ something WHIP guy in a pitchers' park, in a pitchers' division.

My take, he's a kind of risk.  And unless Detroit slagged his arm in 2002 and 2003, not an innings eater type.

I agree, a pretty significant risk.........
He could only pitch in relief (soreness, maybe expected) when he came back in Sept. and was bad. 4 outings, 6.2 innings, 3 HR's allowed (Texas & KC both hammered him) 9.53 ERA......if he were the Mike Maroth from the previous 2 1/2 years, you'd give either Mahay or CJ, but now I think we may have just as good, or better options in-house.

Defense....
Maroth pitches to contact and could be decent in front of a good defense.

What makes you think that the Rangers defense will be good?

Maroth last year was pitching in front of the best defense in the AL (and arguably, the league).

To expect him to do well in Texas might be expecting a lot....

Defense....
Yeah, our defense figures to be below-average, at best, and possibly terrible depending on what we do in CF.

Teixeira and Laird figure to be the only above average defensive players on the field, unless (and I'm not suggesting this is even being considered) we trade for someone like Willy Taveras to play CF.
