Worst Signing

Dayn Perry  says

"Although this one's not nearly as bad as some of the pre-Winter Meetings signings that took place (e.g., Gary Matthews Jr., Juan Pierre, Adam Eaton), the Rangers' decision to go long with Vicente Padilla is highly dubious, despite his solid campaign in 2006. Padilla has a history of arm trouble, and he was very fortunate last season, considering he's a fly-ball pitcher toiling in hitter-friendly Ameriquest Field. In all likelihood, he won't repeat his modest successes of '06. The Rangers, by re-signing Padilla and hotly pursuing Barry Zito, have yet to learn that a park such as theirs demands a groundball staff."

Padilla
He's not a flyball pitcher.

His GB/FB ratio was middle of the pack in 2006, and was actually worse last year than it has been historically.

Perry Hates the Rangers
He has never had one good thing to say about the team or any moves JD has made.  I ignore everything he says.  If Texas signs a pitcher it is a bad deal.  If they don't and get a position player, they are neglecting their weakness.

If I cursed, he would get a big long cursing rant.

for what its worth...
he was actually pretty decent to the Rangers throughout the 2006 season.  Even left them ranked number 11 on his power rankings at the end of the season.  He consistently considered the Rangers' tough schedule as a reason for them being better than they appeared.

You may have a point...
...but I still choose not to like his comments.

His quote in the latest article that Texas still has not figured out they need ground ball pitchers is way off-base.  Daniels knows he needs ground ball pitchers and that left-hand pitchers work better at TBIA than others.  The system is trying to develop them.  But to say Zito can't pitch at TBIA is ignoring the data that he so loves to reference.

Hmmmm
I wonder how reliable that is.  I don't see the Rangers beating that offer unless they are willing to guarantee 6 years.  quote:

5 years and $78.5M with an option for a 6th years at $17.5M for a total 6/$96M

by t ball on Dec 7, 2006 8:58 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

they would
have to offer that much 6 years 94 or 96 million with a 7 year option i dont know if that site is true or not

well
also a another site says 5 years 70 million is going to be mets top offer

This guy contradicts himself so badly..
by saying Padilla at 3/$34 is the worst, yet Schmidt w/ injury history and 3/$47 is the best.  He says getting Schmidt at 3 years was a coup by the Dodgers.  Rangers got 3 years and spend $13 Mil less, but they're idiots?  Makes no sense.

by stltxfan on Dec 7, 2006 8:52 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Well....
It makes sense if you think Schmidt is a much better pitcher than Padilla.

I don't have a problem with the Padilla contract, but I can certainly understand someone not liking it while at the same time liking the Schmidt deal.

Frankly, I would rather have Schmidt at $15+ million per season over Padilla at $11+ million.

Not only that....
But as I showed in another thread, Schmidt has actually pitched significantly more than Padilla has the past 5 years AND 2 years.

So, on top of Schmidt being a better pitcher than Padilla, he's also been LESS injury prone....

That being said, I think Perry is wrong here. Meche has to, by far, be the worst signing so far this off-season....

Worst signing
I think the Soriano, Lee, Matthews, and probably even Juan Pierre signings are worse than the Meche deal.

It's still horrible, but but they are more horrible.

Don't forget
about the Orioles bullpen signings and Mike Stanton.  Not as big in dollars, but these stupid middle reliever millionaires drive up the market, too.

by t ball on Dec 8, 2006 9:46 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

How can this compare to the Meche contract
Padilla has had up and down years but he impressed last year and he was HERE.  Let's not even think about the extra $12M for Meche to play in KC.

I think Padilla is the type of person
most people cannot be objective about.  Folks remember bean balls and DUIs and color their analysis of his performance with that information.

All of these sports writers are just inane.
I don't see why you guys get upset about what they have to say. If anything, I would think that a guy like Zito is the perfect pitcher for the Ballpark in Arlington. A lefty with nasty breaking stuff that is really hard to get solid contact on. Since he is a lefty then guys pull the ball to left. Right field is the power alley, not left. Soft tossing lefties are the way to go here. That is why Rogers had so much success. Of course, the lefty has to be good. Zito is.
