One more Hershiser note...

From T.R. Sullivan's Rangers website article on Hershiser leaving...

Hershiser spent the past 3 1/2 seasons as the Rangers pitching coach before taking a job in the front office as an executive assistant to club president Jeff Cogen.

An executive assistant?  Isn't that the person who makes copies and schedules appointments and picks up dry-cleaning?

No wonder Hershiser left...

Assistant
Maybe it was a misunderstanding like on "The Office." Orel thought he was assistant club president, when he was actually assistant TO the club president.

Office Space
Speaking of the cult classic, has anyone seen the Arby's commercial with the "Oh Face" guy from the movie.  It is disturbing to see him selling sandwiches.  He will never be anything else to me then the "Oh Face" guy.

confusion
im still confused as to why a guy who was pitching coach, then interviewing for manager jobs, would suddenly take an assistant to club president, it never made any sense.
unless he knew he wasnt getting the la job, so he took it as a safety net while looking for something else

I think you nailed it
Once they made him a glorified ticket taker, I think the writing was on the wall.

The truth...
...Cogen was having an affair with his new secretary, Hershiser, and Mrs. Cogen found out about it and gave Jeff an ultimatum.

Poor Orel lost out, apparently.

the fact that he's a secretary
having an affair and is named orel...too much.

Heh...
"Poor Orel" will lose out every time, if you know what I mean. :)

Maybe...
Buck didn't want Orel around the Rangers? I'm sure that he feels better with his regular pitching coach, Mark Connor, as his main man now.

Buck
I don't really know if he had much to do with Orel
leaving. My head tells me that he probably just didn't see himself moving closer to being a GM/President type in this organization, and that's where he wants to be.

But I can't shake the feeling that Buck did do his part in chasing him off, because Buck ALWAYS chases off guys who don't fit in his little plan. And if he did, I find it pretty ironic that a couple of years ago, I felt like there were three primary guys who were significant assets to the organization, Fuson, Hershiser and Daniels. If he did have anything to do with it, then he's nosed two of the three out of the organization. Will he be able to do it to the third? It will probably Buck or Daniels at some point.
