Around SBN: Chan Sung Jung Wins Thriller Over Dustin Poirier

4/4/06 game day thread

Lineup up...

Same lineup as yesterday, behind Vicente Padilla...

After yesterday's loss, I wouldn't be surprised if the Rangers press a little bit early on, and end up being overaggressive with Wakefield's knuckleball.

Still, I've got a good feeling about Padilla this season, and think he'll do well...I'm thinking we're going to be 1-1 after today's game...

Shouldn't be subjected to blackouts when you pay for something like that.  I tried it last year and they weren't clear about the blackouts, so I dropped that, too.

by Dustin on Apr 4, 2006 9:21 PM CDT up reply actions

99 percent
They say you are going to get over 99 percent of the games.  What they dont tell you is that the less then 1 percent is made up of the 162 games that the closest team to you plays.  It only serves displaced fans.  I had it last year and got on the phone and went up the chain of command until someone gave me my money back.  So there are refunds you just have to fight for them.

I didn't have any trouble getting my money back.  They need to realize that you don't have to live on a different side of the continent to be displaced.  I might as well live in Argentina as far as Rangers baseball is concerned.

MLB Extra Innings...
...is free this week, but the Ranger game is blacked out.  I'd buy the package if the Rangers were on it.  Instead I have to live with MLB's active and deliberate stupidity, so they get nothing.

by Lucas on Apr 4, 2006 8:29 PM CDT up reply actions

An email
Here's the email I sent to kcalvert@texasrangers.com, who Chuck Morgan says is the go-to person with the Rangers on broadcast issues:

I have a situation in regards to the Rangers TV broadcasts, which Chuck Morgan said I should submit to you.

I'm a Rangers fan who lives in Houston.  I attend 6-8 Rangers game per year.  I got satellite TV so that I could get the alternate Fox Sports Southwest feed, so that when the Astros and Rangers are both on Fox Sports at the same time, I can still see the Rangers game.

However, the syndicated, over-the-air Rangers games are not shown in Houston.  I've been told there is insufficient interest in the Houston area for Rangers games to be televised here.

That shouldn't be a problem for me, since I'd be happy to pay for either MLB Extra Innings or the online mlbtv.com in order to watch the Rangers games that I can't see on Fox Sports Southwest.

However, because Houston is part of the Rangers' "home territory," the Rangers are blacked out in the Extra Innings package and on mlbtv.com.

This is baffling to me.  If there is insufficient interest in the games here (one of the 10 largest TV markets in the country) for the Rangers to be broadcast, it would seem to suggest that Houston should not be part of the Rangers' "home territory."

Even more baffling...I'm willing to pay to watch the Rangers on TV.  I'm willing to pay for Extra Innings, or mlbtv.com.  And if I lived virtually anywhere else in the world, I could watch just about any Rangers game, either through Fox Sports Southwest, the over-the-air syndication, or thru one of the pay avenues.

I know there are quite a few Rangers fans here in Houston who are in the same boat.  We're willing to pay for the MLB packages so that we can get the Rangers, but we are prohibited from doing so.  It just doesn't make sense.

If you could let me know what the Rangers fans in the Houston area can do to help rectify this problem, I'd appreciate it.

Adam J. Morris
Houston, Texas

I doubt it will do much good...but it is absurd that MLB won't be getting my $300 or whatever because of the blackout rules.

Not all of them will work.  You gotta spend a while finding one that will pick it up.  sometimes you can get lucky and itll work on the first time... other times it might take 30 mins to get one.  And typically they'll go bad after one day so the process can get annoying

Is it just me
or does the 2006 Red Sox bullpen looked ragged?

Papelbon
Excellent fantasy sleeper this year, especially for you AL-only folks.

Papelbon
I got him in the late rounds of my draft, on the theory that he'd either be closing or a quality starting pitcher by mid-May.

by Adam J. Morris on Apr 4, 2006 9:23 PM CDT up reply actions

He's definitely the exception
And when he slides into the rotation, I guess they might have Lester, too. But right now, it looks like it could be their achilles heel.

get the chance to listen to the game on mlb.com audio tonight...i was playing softball...and of course i was pitching and had a florida state legislator hit the ball right back at my left chin...it looks like a golf ball was sown into my leg...
but the RANGERS WON!!!!! so it doesn't hurt that bad!

Laynce Nix
I'm a little anxious about him. I know it's only two games, and he played well yesterday, but he seems due a hit. He's the only starter without one so far. Let's go Nixie! (I hate that nickname, by the way).
