Disappointing, but...

A good game nonetheless.

If you hold the BoSox to 2 runs, you have to feel good about your chances of winning.

I'd probably be a lot more unhappy if this game happened in July or August, but this early in the season, I can look at it as just one game, and take heart in the way Kameron Loe pitched.

Very unhappy
losing winable games upsets me immensly. April games are as important as July or August..

Kam Loe is very good though.

Adam
I don't really think Kam pitched that well.  He game up at least a couple more hits that would have been HRs if the wind weren't blowing straight in at 20 mph.  He had his moments when he did really well, but I don't think this is one to hang his hat on.

Nix hit a ball on the nose and it was about 30 feet from the warning track.  I think those two of Kam's 2 went to just a few feet from the track.  I want to see him do that on a night when the Ballpark isn't a pitchers park.

No
Loe had a great first game. We never capatalized off of the momentum he would give us.

But yes this loss really bothers me. Hale would have never gotten Tex thrown out.

I was at the game.
I saw what the wind was doing to the ball.  Did you see how much the ball blew that ball that Tex caught in the stands.  Kam Loe would have given up at least 3-4 more runs with a normal wind.  That's not a great outing.  He pitched well, but he had the benifit of the elements.

For all of you worrying about the offense, we faced teh same problem.  I bet we score 6 more runs on a normal night.  I think we had 3 HRs blown back in by the wind.  we had the men get on base, but every time a ball was hit in the air, the wind would hang it up.  Balls that would have gone to the wall, the gap, or over the fence all became fly balls.  We definitely hit the ball harder than the Red Sox, it just didn't pay off tonight.

Flyballs...
He gave up a total of 4 flyballs... one was a home run.  Are you suggesting every flyball was a home run that got knocked down by the wind?

by chase1971 on Apr 6, 2006 7:15 AM CDT up reply actions

The numbers still count.
A good outing is a good outing.  There's always something you can discount.  "Well, he was facing the Royals."  Or "He was pitching against a team that just flew in late this morning."  Or "Well the Red Sox have never seen him pitch before."  Or "Yeah, but he had a couple of hot grounders that would have been singles had Hank not made the great plays to throw the batters out."  There's always something.

I think Loe pitched pretty darn well.

Hale
never coached third base.  When Hale was here, Steve Smith was and still is the third base coach.

LOE
Actually, when the flags are blowin in it creates MORE of a hitters park.  Loe was fantastic.

by skechr on Apr 6, 2006 9:32 AM CDT up reply actions

loe
i thought he did well, much better than i thought he would honestly.
so far our pitching is looking better than i expected, even if the record doesnt reflect that.
but its still early
Pimps be damned, it's harder out here for a Rangers fan!

Right
That's always been my impression. When the wind is blowing out, TBIA is a pretty typical park. The jet stream only becomes a big factor when the wind in blowing toward home plate, because it bounces off the Gold Club and whips around. I wasn't at last nights game, though, so I don't really know what it was like.

Hey Guess What?
Good pitching, and a very poorly timed windmill motion by our third base coach.

by ghtd36 on Apr 5, 2006 11:32 PM CDT up reply actions

he didn't motion Tex home...
It was the wind coming from centerfield that caused his arm to move in a windmill motion making Tex think he was suppose to go home...

ugh
Why is nobody commenting on how horrible the decision was to send Tex home when he was the tying run that was going to be standing on 3rd base with only one out?

Ruined my entire evening.

BTW
I think the chances of Manny making a bad throw were greater than the chances of Jimenez of Barajas getting the run home.

by altercall on Apr 6, 2006 12:02 AM CDT up reply actions

I seriously doubt that...
With a runner on 3rd base and 1 out, your odds of that run scoring are pretty good. And Manny didn't need a good throw... they had time to cut the ball off and still got him

Everyone
is commenting on that (look at the game thread).

It was an absolute rally killer.

Not that upset
I would have liked to see us pull out the win, but in the end I am very hopeful about this season. Padilla looked excellent, as did Loe. The pen looks like it will be very strong with Feldman, Alfonseca, Otsuka, and Cordero at the back end.

Millwood will be fine. His stuff looked good. I see no reason why our pitching shouldn't be significantly improved this year, especially with Tejeda also coming up within the next week or so.

We had another bat
his name was Dellucci.

In the end
I do not think that Dellucci would have been as productive as  he was last year. Plus, if Tejeda is even close to as good this year as he was in nearly half a season last year, he will be far more valuable at the bottom of our rotation than Dellucci platooning in left with Derosa.

Plus, we faced Josh Beckett and Curt Schilling in our two losses. They both had good stuff, and while we wasted some opportunities, they are two of the best pitchers in baseball when on. Sure it is frustrating, but in the end we are better team with Tejeda in our rotation than Dellucci platooning in left.

Not a bad way to start the season
The Rangers played a very good team, and nearly took two out of three.  I'm curious to see how they'll do against a much more beatable team in Detroit(although, they'll have to try with their 4th and 5th starters).

The last I'm going to say about last night.
Kam Loe did a good job.  He attacked the hitters, getting up early in alot of counts.  Last season one of his biggest problems was getting behind early, followed by throwing too many balls.  Several timed he seemed to blow the 88-90 mph fastball right by guys, including 3 times in one at bat to Manny.  He showed that he wasn't afraid.

I don't care what anyone says, last night the wind killed the ball.  It was coming in from the OF, slightly, maybe a little more, from RF.  I go to several games a year and almost never call a ball out that stays in the park.  When I do it usually dies on the track.  Last night I think that there were 5 balls that I thought were going out that stayed in.  The Nixon shot was a laser that everyone knew was out when it was hit.  It still only made it out by 2-3 feet.  Tex had to run up the line at least 15 feet from where he expected to catch that popup in the stands.

I'm glad to hear that Loe only had 4 FB outs, but as far as I remember, 2 of those would have been HRs with a normal wind at the Ballpark.  HE did pitch a decent game, but I'm not going to anoint the guy a Cy Young candidate just yet.  I want to see him do that on an average night.

On a similar note, Beckett had to deal with the same elements and was actually helped out more.  He would have been gone in the 4th, maybe sooner, if it had been a normal night.

Congrats to Loe on a good box score, and for being aggressive against a good team.  I want to see more of that.
