"Some Democrats, breaking ranks from their leadership, today said the death of terrorist leader Abu Musab Zarqawi in Iraq was a stunt to divert attention from an unpopular and hopeless war."
A stunt?!!
Military personnel are not political pawns.
Don't get me started. I see red I'm so mad at these democrat politicians.

"'That is good news; he was a dreadful, vicious person,' said Sen. Kent Conrad, North Dakota Democrat. Mr. Conrad added that he hopes the military can get Osama bin Laden and Ayman al Zawahiri, another top al Qaeda leader.
'They're even more important,' he said."
"Officially, Democratic leaders reacted positively to the news and praised the troops that successfully targeted al Qaeda's leader in Iraq with 500-pound bombs at his safe house 30 miles from Baghdad."
Did we read the same article? And, are you aware of who the owner of the Washington Times is? Hint: his name rhymes with Pupert Nurdoch.
I have heard some far lefties make some truly offbase and unfair assertions in the current partisan atmosphere. That douchebag who compared Guantanamo to a Nazi camp comes to mind. I didn't see any of that in this article.

No, Bro, not currently.
I'm a retired
US Army. How about you?
And while we are on the subject
Also, and please don't interpret my questions as attacking you or the typical soldier, I think of you guys as my brothers, what were your thoughts about the coverup of the Arizon safety Special Forces guy (sorry, I'm in a hurry, no time to look it up)?
Gutless Wonders
Abu Ghraib: It has become the "good morning" "good afternoon", and "good night" of the politically left pundits. There may be only a handfull of debates when the left leaning pundits are loosing that they will not bring up Abu Ghraib during the remainder of GW Bush's administration.
Abu Ghraib
Common sense would dictate that it was a pretty handy recruitment tool for the insurgents and Al-Quaeda. I'd assert that the despicable handling of the scandal by Army Brass and, ultimately Rumsfeld, would definitely add a lot of fuel to the fire, as well.
How would you grade the job Donald Rumsfeld is doing? Seriously? Does he seem like the type of guy that has the remotest inkling what its like to be your average soldier/sailor/marine? Or cares?
And as for the "good morning, good afternoon" argument you cited, I really disagree. That sounds like the reactionary right, who answer every criticism of W with Clinton insults.
Need examples? "Mission Accomplished." "Bring it on." Consistent lies about warrantless wiretapping. "Brownie, you're doing a heckuva job." Not asking a single damn question about Katrina when briefed, then playing golf the day after the storm hits. Resisting the forming of the 911 comission, then saying that he would only testify with Cheney not under oath and with no notes being taken. The total flip-flop about the Plame leak. Relying on the time-tested soul glimpsing technique with regards to Putin. The war paying for itself. Signing statements that allege he is above constitutional law. Saying, "Fuck Saddam, we're taking him out," then repeatedly lying that "all options were still on the table" (pre-war). Oh, and WMD's.
Okay, I'm done being obnoxiously sanctimonious now.

weird
you would hope that somewhere in there, the word "stunt" owuld appear, and not just because the writer of the article said it.
yeah, pete stark's quote doesn't sound great, but stunt makes it sound like he doesnt' believe it happened. thats seriously the worst editorializing of a non editorial article i've seen in a "mainstream" newspaper.
Military personnel are not political pawns?
To be frank.
amendment.
That is about the most idiotic reason.
And those are just the reasons to oppose attempts to ban gay marriage. There are also plenty of reasons why you may feel that gay marriage is wrong but that it is a total waste of time for the Senate to be working on it.

get Osama...
meh...
everyone on here
I'm even a political science/economics double major, I just have no interest in discussing politics with strangers, who are likely already set in their views.
But for the sake of the fact that the conversation is going on...
I think most fellow conservatives will agree that Bush has failed us over the last 2 to 3 years. The war hasn't gone as smoothly as it could have, but I am not a total downer on it, I do believe the situation is getting better and that the world is better off given the potential of an islamic democracy in the middle east. I say an islamic democracy, because I don't expect an american democracy.
Anyways, most of us conservatives are not just cheerleaders for Bush anymore, that has been WAY overstated in the past few political threads. But for the most part, it probably still comes off that way, because we realize the importance of the Republican party winning (in our opinions!) and aren't all that willing to admit we're in a position of weakness. Oh well, ultimately, I just felt like making that point, that we're not all just drones. Besides, I'm a brainless and devout follower of my governor..JEB..YAY!!
The Polls
I disagree with you on Iraq, though. It was a mistake to go in there, and it's not getting any better. Democracy in Iraq is a pipedream. Long ago Europeans drew the borders there in order to keep them divided, and it has worked. Remember that they're not only going to get interference from themselves and us, but other regional powers, too.
Anything's possible, but it would take a lot more investment and political fortitude than this Administration's willing to dish out. Think on the scale of the Marshall Plan.
It's a long, dark tunnel and we can't even begin to see the light. Can't leave or it would be a failed state situation even worse than Afghanistan was. Can't ramp things up because the President has screwed around so long he no longer has the political capital he liked to talk about. The American people won't accept it. Other countries don't want to touch it with a 10 foot pole.

i agree meaningful democracy in iraq would be a beautiful thing, but a: as dusty says, it would be incredibly difficult to achieve and b: i don't think bush and co were ever serious about it if democracy means anything more than "people show up at the polls every now and then and get their thumbs died purple."
any popularly elected government in iraq is going to be very hostile to israel, very tight with iran, and is going to seek to keep a much higher percentage of their oil revenues than the bushies are comfortable with.

I want to classify my thoughts as middle of the road, but that's misleading .. most 'middlers' feel very strongly on each issue, but side with different parties depending on the issue.
