Try to resign Padilla now

Padilla and his agent may not want to negotiate now, but it wouldn't hurt to try. He has the best stuff on the Rangers' staff. Don't believe me? Watch the movement on his fastball against the White Sox on the official site highlights.   It was low in the strike zone yesterday and particularly nasty. It would be ridiculous for management to let him get away.  Acquiring him for Rodriquez may be the pitching equivalent of getting Michael Young from the Blue Jays.

Can try...
but like you stated, they aren't wanting to negotiate to maximize his value in the offseason.
This team reminds me of that plane spiraling towards the earth in Superman Returns. It's gut wrenching and fascinating at the same time.

1 year guy
isn't he one of those guys who always has a great contract year, only to fizzle out in between?

i believe it's called "the esteban loaiza syndrome"

Isn't this his first FA year?

I almost positive it is
And to reply to the topic:

I wouldn't expect anything to happen until the season's over.  Although I don't think it's likely they'll be able to keep him, there's a shot and I think you have to try.

Padilla's gone
The reason he signed a one-year contract was so he could hit paydirt as a FA after the season if he had a good year.  Both he and Eaton will be FA's after the season so yet again it looks we'll be starting virtually from scratch in building up a starting rotation. Millwood and Koronka look like the only incumbents that'll be in next year's rotation.  Rheino and Loe have been awful. There won't be much in terms of affordable quality FA starters this offseason. Gil Meche?  Tony Armas Jr.?  Blah...

Padilla
If Hicks isn't going to spend the money to keep these guys, then the Rangers might as well become a AAA+ franchise like the Twins and the Marlins.  Padilla was almost free, but Eaton was expensive in terms of the talent given up to get him.  Why trade for 1-year players?

Ha
I wish we were like the Twins. I'd rate them as the favorites to cme out of the AL.
