OT: Top College QBs

Okay my friend and I were having an argument today and I wanted to get some input from yall.  I maintain that Matt Leinart when you take into account his record as a starter and performance at USC is one of the top 5 QBs in college FB in the last 20 yrs.  Maybe even of all time.  I just wanted to see yalls input on that question and gets some lists of top 5 in the last 20 yrs and top 5 of all time.

A name to throw out there
Kerry Collins

I think people forget how good he was in college.

Yeah that is a good one we didnt bring up.  We brought up Toretta and Charlie Ward.  We also brought up Testaverde (just outside the 20 yr window).  Another friend even threw Heupel's name out there.

I don't...
that Kerry Collins/Ki-Jana Carter/Kyle Brady trio was unstoppable in 1994. What a great, great Penn State team (This coming from an Ohio State fan.)

Vince Young..
He will be remembered...
We will see...

Tommy Frazier
Was of the QB of what some see as the greatest teams of all time the 1995 Nebraska Cornhuskers. Put up monster number is that amazing wishbone running attack.

Yes.
Very much in the top 5.

by Longhorn on Sep 14, 2006 11:31 PM CDT up reply actions

agreed
very top 5.  a dominant player.  couldn't really be stopped when everyone knew he was gonna run.

I think when ESPN
Had Herbstreit, Corso and that gang pick the all time best college team, they did it like a playoff format, it generally ended up being the 95 Nebraska team against the 2001 Miami team, with Miami winning of course.

Mike Vick
He only played two years, and his second year was injury-marred, but that first year was freaking incredible.

He kept Virginia Tech in that title game despite FSU being the vastly better team overall.

Others I remember thinking were really good...
Charlie Ward, Tommy Frazier, Ty Detmer, Jake Plummer, Andre Ware, Peyton Manning... there are others I'm forgetting about.

And I always LOVED watching Antwan Randel El play, though it was hard to tell how good he was since he was always running for his life playing for those putrid Indiana teams. I often wonder how good he would've been in college had he gone to a powerhouse and focused solely on football.

I am right, that is how you spell 'Plunkett'. Really..

by Longhorn on Sep 15, 2006 4:44 PM CDT up reply actions

Other Guys
A few guys who don't get their due because they didn't pan out in the NFL:
Ken Dorsey, Miami
Danny Wuerffel, Florida
Major Harris, West Virginia (one of the first dual-threat QBs)
Timmy Chang, Hawaii (product of a system? Absolutely. But a damn good product)

And a name that most people may have forgotten about ...
Jim McMahon, BYU
Let's all remember that before the Super Bowl Shuffle, Jim McMahon was a GREAT QB for BYU.

Michael Young for President 2008. Mark Teixeira for Secretary of Defense. Hank Blalock for Secretary of Badassery.

Wasn't the knock on BYU
that they wouldn't play a top school and that their National Championship was bogus?

#1 is a no-brainer for me.
Ty Detmer.  He set 42 passing records in 1990.  No other QB has done that.

Who
Was the Indiana U quarterback that took the team to a rare Rose Bowl appearance about 1967?  The name escapes me, but I recall he threw enough passes to Jade Butcher to exhaust a packinghouse's leather supply.

You see that TV looking thing in front of you Ed?  You can use it and that typewriter thingy to find stuff like that out.  :)

His senior year wasn't too good
except for game one when he kicked the crap out of my Louisiana Tech team while I was in the stands downing $3.50 beers.

Only thing good about that game was watching the Cougar mascot struggle to do pushups in the fourth quarter.
