What I would do...

The first thing I would do is fire Buck. Now there are 2 ways to go...A) Go for it B) Sell and build.

A) Go for it...New Manager list would start with Trey Hillman.

-Go after and get DM (Japanese Pitcher)
-Resign Padilla
-Resign Eaton or get Lilly

Millwood
DM
Padilla
Eaton or Lilly
Tejeda

-Resign GMJ
-Sign Sori (4/50)
-Let go of Wilks, Barajas, Lee and DeRosa take picks

CF-GMJ
SS-Young
1st-Tex
LF-Sori
3rd-Blalock
2nd-Kinsler
DH-Botts
C-Laird
RF-Cruz

B) Manager list would start with Girardi.

-Trade Tex, MY, Blalock, Millwood and Aki for the best you can get and start over.

I would rather go with A but if management does a half ass job and lets say resigns Wells and GMJ brings in Lilly and signs C Wilson then I would rather go with B. But if management went out and signed a top tier pitcher (Zito, Schmidt, DM) and resigned Padilla or Eaton and then kept Wilks and resigned GMJ then I could live with that. It would show that there was a plan.

It comes down to that I would rather go young then start the season again knowing that we don't really have a chance.

Give Eaton a one year deal
and make it worth enough so that he takes it.  Volquez's performance this year indicates that our pitching studs may still need some time.  But they are still there - we don't want to be locked into 4 year deals with too many guys.

Millwood 3-4 years
DM 4-5 years
Padilla 3 years  (I'd guess 3 years, 25 million is what he could get right now)
Eaton 1 year, 7 million.
Tejeda/Koronka

Eaton leaves after 2007 (for more money or because he can't stay healthy), and Danks/Volquez/Hurley will be closer to being ready to take his place.

Thats just like saying M Tejada is good so that must mean Arias is good...

Well, then what is the reason you think the "Japanese pitcher" is risky?

Matsuzaka
I've seen the guy pitch in the WBC, and the fact he got major-league hitters out, combined with the fact he's probably the best pitcher in Japan, is enough for me to feel confident that he'll succeed in MLB.

I don't see why he's any more of a risk than any other above-average pitcher.

Risk
The Texas Rangers have to take risk to get top flight pitchers.  Risk moderates a players value - a high potential / high risk guy should come substantially cheaper than a high potential / low risk guy.  (Likewise, a guy who you KNOW is going to be bad - Jeff Weaver, for instance - should be cheaper than a guy who probably will be bad/injured but may have an awesome year (Adam Eaton)).

The key is paying players according to their risk - don't pay a Japanese pitcher the same money you'd pay Roy Halliday or Johan Santana, because of the risk.  But as all of us Ranger fans know, we will never have a Cy Young pitcher here unless we get lucky.  I say roll the dice - it isn't our money...

One nice thing about guys like Matsuzaka
and it depends on the guy how nice it is, but you get control of him for six years but are only liable for the length of his contract, I assume 3-4 years. That's a nice little bonus for a guy at his age and experience.

yeah
your risk assessment isn't really based on evidence is it.  irabu?  had a couple good seasons before getting fat.  best in the japanese league will translate into at tje very ;east one solid year of pitching while batters try to figure out his gyro ball by downloading you tube video clips and calling bobby v.

i would go after DM even if we are rebuilding considering that he's a quiet japanese guy that would't rock the boat.  problem is, we are never really in these bidding wars, its just between seattle and the dodgers.
