Rumblings: Clubs Notified that Draft Pick Compensation to be Dropped in Upcoming CBA

Link to story

snippet:

Ken Davidoff of Newsday reported just over a week ago that teams may no longer receive draft picks as compensation for free agents who leave as part of the upcoming CBA....

This would explain, in part, why Alfonso Soriano and Carlos Lee have been on the trading block. Both the Nationals and Rangers have been hot to try and get something for these two players before free agency forces both clubs to possibly walk away without anything for these two top players that were not dealt at the trading deadline.

If this is the case, it makes the Lee deal look quite a bit worse....

Oops...
You're right.

I think I even read the thread where it was in....

Memory goes when you age :p.

Still, I think it deserves a thread all it's own, and not one where it's one of many different things posted..... Yeah, that's the ticket....

Well...
I did miss that one....

Sigh, everyone's a critic :p.

Thanks, though. I feel like a complete doofus, now :).

Anyways.... my fantasy team's doing much better now even though like 6 of my guys got hurt at the same time.

Let's see, Barrett, Youkilis, Manny, Dellucci, Alou, and Mussina all got injured like within 2 days of each other.

Fortunately, Barrett, Dellucci, and Alou are back. And I dropped Teahen for Duncan/ then Youkilis for Teahen after realizing that Teahen's better than Youkilis. And Mussina's coming back soon.

Unfortunately, now Hafner's hurt, and I think I fuxed up my fantasy football draft by taking Alexander over LJ, and having Plummer and Brunell as my QBs and waiting to take Atlanta as my defense....

Oh well, at least I DO have one of the top 3 RBs even if he's going to subjected to just about every football curse known to man.

Also, I think Dunn and Thomas Jones will be solid, while I really like my receiving core of Chambers, Walker, Mason (reunited with McNair, baby!), Glenn, and Bennett (though, not so much now that Collins will likely be the QB). Also, having the #1 TE is a big plus.

Yes. I was REALLY planning on making this a thread about fantasy sports :).

Oh yes,
and that should be my fantasy team's doing much better since like 6 of my guys got hurt at the same time.

Of course, getting like 6 HRs from Utley, Garciaparra, Morneau, Alou, and Delmon Young (who I picked up for Duncan) will do that for you.

I'm really hoping that this is a sign that my guys will break out of their slumps without my big two guys (Manny and Hafner) to pump me up in the rate categories.

It'd also be nice to see my pitching staff show some semblance of actually pitching well. I really regret missing out on Sabathia and taking Lackey a little earlier than I was planning on it (substituting Doug Davis with my next pick - shudder).

Overall, though, I can't really complain since I was lucky for the first 4 months. It's just been a horrendous August has tightened the race up somewhat.

I'm curious what others think about my FF team, as I'm still trying to understand the nuances of how to play FF, in general:

Picked 2nd out of 14.

QB - Plummer, Brunell
RB - Alexander, Dunn, Thomas Jones, DeAngelo Williams, Duckett
WR - Chambers, Walker, Mason, Glenn, Bennett
TE - Gates
K - Feely
DEF - ATL

I think I did an ok job in the draft. I think I did well with the WRs considering that all of the top tier guys were gone by the time I drafted in the 2nd round (all frigging 8 of them). Only issues, as stated before, were picking Alexander with his curses over LJ, having Plummer as my starter (the run on BACKUP QBs took me by surprise), and accidently letting the draft autodraft for me (thereby, selecting Feely instead of a defense).

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Oops again
that should be 2nd out of 12 teams....

14 teams, and I think that's a GREAT lineup.

Great news for us!!!
In the year we're likely to lose multiple type-A players (Lee and Padilla at least).

This sucks...

It just sucks.

What is the reasoning of this?
I would assume the point is to help the lower payroll teams, so what is the reasoning behind scrapping it?

by Sharky on Sep 3, 2006 5:30 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

NY
So the yanks/bosox don't lose picks.
one day people you will realize this is important stuff. until then just keep being worthless

by Andrew F Medina on Sep 3, 2006 8:35 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

i think
that the reasoning was so mid level teams wouldnt get punished for signing free agents. all boils down to the players union wanting more teams in the bidding for the free agents, which drives up the price.
Pimps be damned, it's harder out here for a Rangers fan!

What are the chances...........
a new CBA is actually signed before the end of this off season ? More likely to go into effect next year........just wondering ?

by tklawless on Sep 3, 2006 10:01 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

CBA
It'll be signed before the season starts, and well ahead of the draft for sure.

But how then can they take........
away picks this year if you lose the FA "before" the new CBA is signed ? I guess they can do whatever they want, but seems odd they'd take the picks away if you've already lost the FA to another team (which I'm guessing will be happening from say November thru Jan-Feb) and then they sign the new CBA sometime near (or even after) the beginning of ST.........

I see what you mean
I think that certain teams (the Rangers for one) will probably fight to have those provisions take effect during the next off-season.  If you're going to take them away, I think that's only fair since a lot of transactions were made with the compensation picks in mind.

Here's what I don't get
There's no way Carlos Lee or Alfonso Soriano cleared waivers.

So the Rangers and Nationals couldn't have been trying to trade them.

by Adam J. Morris on Sep 3, 2006 11:21 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

why not?
Three way deal with the team who claimed him?  Is that against the rules?

by Dustin on Sep 3, 2006 11:37 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Lee and Soriano
If they were claimed, they have to be traded with 72 hours or pulled back off of waivers.

And I'm not sure what a 3-way deal would do for any team, anyway.

This CBA stuff
I've only read that from the one guy from Newsday.  Every other article about this refers to him.  What if he's wrong?  I'd take it with a grain of salt.

question...
why would they change this rule at the END of the year when something like this would greatly change many team's decision at the deadline?

i dont think it happens THIS offseason...

That's what we were mentioning above...........
doesn't seem to make sense (my POV might be colored by my homerism) but alot of moves were made with the current system in mind (by teams other than the Ranger's) and you'd think they would let those play out with the picks, before just chopping teams' legs off to appease the Yankees (Boston & Dodger's, etc.).
