Mark Mulder returns to the Cards

Mark Mulder has re-upped with the St. Louis Cardinals, signing a 2 year, $13 million deal to stay with St. Louis.

You had to figure that this was what was going to happen, given how the last week or so had played out.

Good thing, too

in response to this and to Athos, below. Sometimes finishing second is a good thing. I would not have wanted the Rangers to beat the winning offers on Mulder or Zito or any others this winter.

It would be nice if the agent or player gave Hicks a little of that salary increase. He has to be an agents best friend.

I think the AL has been losing for years

pitchers seem to be scared to play in the DH league. Myself I say good riddance, give me a Millwood who welcomes the challenge over a guy that wants the easy way out.

Agreed, and good riddance...........

He won't pitch 'til after the AS break & in the AL he'd probably get racked........shoulder surgery is a lot different than Tommy John.......I'm betting he is never the same.

Rangers make solid opening offer before any other team. Agent takes Rangers offer and shops it around, leaving the Rangers hanging for weeks. Team that player really wants to play for finally matches or does a hair better. Player signs with that team.

The Rangers need to use the 5th starter spot to break in young talent anyway. I'm looking forward to Rupe or another young arm taking that spot.

Mulder contract

Man that deal is silly. Who do the cards think they are, anyway. Signing injured un-productive pitchers, that should be left to the pros..... the Cubs.

Fine with 2nd Place

I'm tired of seeing the Rangers come in 2nd in these things too, but in this case, its ok. Paying him any more would be dumb. Given that he's out 1/2 of this year, the Cardinals are essentially paying him $12 million a year for time he could conceivably pitch. And even when he does pitch, he's an absolute crap shoot given his decline.

Ohka

if we go after anybody, hopefully it's Ohka - dude's 30, should cost around $4.5 mil (much less than half a year of Mulder would), and he's got decent ERA & WHIP numbers. Maybe it's just because Brian Lawrence, Ramon Ortiz, Tony Armas, Bruce Chen and Steve Trachsel don't interest me but I just think if we've got to secure another veteran pitcher, go after Ohka - if not, I'm fine with running Kam Loe or Koronka out there, Rupe if he proves it in the Spring

Ohka is not terrible

but didn't he have some serious injuries over the last few seasons as well? I can't see any reason to pick Ohka over Loe/Rupe/Koronka...

from what I read

Okha is holding out for a 3 year deal. That's probably a year longer than I'd want to go with him considering who the Rangers have coming up the pike.

Trot Nixon & Craig Wilson

and I'm all about Jason Botts, Jason Botts, Jason Botts - however if we're uncomfortable at any point depending on he and Cruz to fill the RF/DH spots, would it be wise to sign Trot Nixon or Craig A. Wilson? Nixon gets on base and has shown some pop in the past although that declined last year, but is at least a steady stopgap in our offense...and Wilson's got the raw power and generic DH quality I usually look for (thinking in the mold of Mickey Tettleton)
