Long Suffering Fan

I'm sitting here watching the playoffs thinking... when was the last time any of my teams actually won a championship? As it turns out it was when I was 7 years old, I wasn't much of a fan back then.

Just curious as to what other sports teams people on LSB are Die-Hards for. I assume there are quite a few Cowboy fans here but also probably some big college sports fans as well.

Are there any other long suffering fanatics out there? Who do you cheer for in other sports? What is your all-time favorite moment as a fan for your favorite teams?

My favorite sports and teams are listed below in order of how much I like the sport...

Baseball- Rangers
College Football- Utah Utes
College Basketball- Utah Utes
Football- Raiders
Basketball- Celtics

The Celtics won the Championship in 85/86 when I was 7 and the Raiders won the Superbowl in 1984. I have had glimmers of hope- Rangers in mid/late 90's, Raiders in '03, Utes in basketball in the mid 90's made a final four and a few sweet sixteens, but I would have to say my favorite moment in sports so far was the undefeated Utes in '05 who went to the Fiesta Bowl but of course did not get a shot at USC (who would have probably beat Utah by 20 but it would have been nice to at least see them get a shot). A close runner up was the first division title in '96.

Anyway, just kinda bored and wondering what everyone thinks. I just want one World Series in my lifetime and as soon as the Rangers win it all that will be my #1 moment. Until then I just watch other fans celebrate their moment of glory.

Yeah...
sorry Hockey fans, I don't watch Hockey at all but I would imagine a few Stars fans here as well.

I'm not really long suffering.. but here's my list
MLB - Texas Rangers
NFL - New York Giants
NBA - Charlotte Bobcats (I've kind of adopted them)
NHL - Hartford Whalers/Carolina Hurricanes
NCAAF - Ohio State Buckeyes
NCAAB - UConn Huskies

Best sports moment for me so far: UConn Men's Basketball 1999 Title Run. Will be replaced by Rangers World Series victory (I hope!).

I just wanted to point out...
that my favorite Rangers moment is a tie between Juan Gone's 1996 ALDS and this ninth inning from 2004 against Oakland:

Rangers ninth: With one out, Blalock homered. M. Young doubled. Teixeira was intentionally walked. Jordan grounded into fielder's choice, M. Young to third, Teixeira out. Dellucci doubled, M. Young and Jordan scored. Rangers 5, Athletics 4. The ballpark went nuts that day.

I was there that day
When the Rangers came back and beat Oakland. That was a great day.

Brian Jordan
I specifically remember, from that season, that he was the most consistent rallykiller there was.

It seemed like he must have had at least 20 rally-killing, take-the-wind-out-of-your-sails, 1 out GIDPs...

I remember railing against him after his 4th AB.  He looked like he was so terrible from the get go.  People kept on saying, "he's actually a good player, give him a chance."

Well, people were right that I should have allowed him a larger sample size - but he was still really bad that year

Do you realize...
...how pathetic this franchise has become, that the highlight of the 21st century is a game in a "miracle" season that saw the team end up in third place?

great
so the 2 best moments resulted in the Rangers finishing in 3rd place (out of 4) and with the AL getting the home field advantage.  Super!

I was at TBiA...
in 1996 for game three of the ALDS to camp out for World Series tickets. The tickets were going on sale the next morning and everyone was sure the Rangers would win that night.

I bought a ticket to the game while my sister and friend waited in our tent in the lawn outside. I remember setting up the tent and the fireworks going off and the whole make-shift Rangers village of tents on the lawn just went nuts. It was like a community.

So I took off running to get inside to catch the rest of the game when someone yelled, "False alarm! The pyro guy has an itchy trigger finger!" However, moments later, Juan hit a monster shot just as I was getting into the park.

Darren Oliver pitched his ass off and the Ballpark was pure electricity. And blah, blah, blah...Fuck Mariano Duncan, fuck Mike Henneman, the Yankees pulled out the win that started their dynasty.

I remember walking back to my tent and this kid, no older than 10 said, "If anyone has a chance, it's Witt tomorrow!" and I kind of laughed to myself while some Yankees fans ran past and yelled at us in that obnoxious way that only Yankees fans can.

Still, it was the best crowd atmosphere I've ever been a part of.

Stupid Dean Palmer
and his game 2 throwing error. DAMN YOU DEAN!

by cmkelly29 on Oct 14, 2007 10:03 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Actually...
If you take a look at the Series:

1996 AL Division Series

The Rangers had the lead in every game. They had leads of 3 runs and 4 runs in games they ended up losing. What did the Rangers in in that series was the bullpen.

Dean Palmer's throwing error in game two came with two on and no one out, so I get the feeling the Yankees were going to score in that inning anyway. In the Rangers half of the 12th, they left the bases loaded.

That was just a series the Rangers gave away. tear

Hmmm...
Top of the 10th, Rangers Batting, Tied 4-4, John Wetteland facing 1-2-3
John Wetteland replaces Mariano Rivera pitching
---  1  D Hamilton      Single to CF (Pop Fly)
   O      1--  4  I Rodriguez     Bunt Groundout: 1B-2B/Sacrifice (Weak 2B-1B); Hamilton to 2B
   O      -2-  6  R Greer         Groundout: P unassisted (Weak 1B); Hamilton to 3B
          --3  4  J Gonzalez      Intentional Walk
   O      1-3  5  W Clark         Flyball: RF (Deep RF)

Anyone remember how deep that Will Clark flyball was? I don't remember it. I was probably pretty pissed when it was caught.

my poor saints
I wouldn't describe myself as suffering because I don't put that much into my sports teams as they are historically mostly very bad

NCAA BB - OSU
MLB - Rangers
NFL - Saints
NHL - Senators
Other College Sports - OSU

Best moment by far was the shot by John Lucas to get into the final 4, last year for the saints is the only other worthy of consideration

Boring
Rangers, Mavs, Cowboys, Stars

Stars winning was greatness.

1996 Super Bowl, I couldn't quite enjoy, because of the presence of Barry Switzer and the knowledge that Jerry Jones was ruining what should have been a dynasty.

1992 NFL season, capped off by the 1993 Super Bowl, was the pinnacle for me.  Loved the team, loved the players, loved the coach, didn't even mind the owner all that much back then.  And loved watching everyone insist that the team was still a year or two away, that San Fran or Buffalo was going to win it all because Dallas wasn't quite grizzled enough, while the Cowboys just kept rolling over everyone.

If, in 2010, Brandon McCarthy and Eric Hurley and Edinson Volquez are pitching the Rangers to a World Series sweep, with Jarrod Saltalamacchia and Ian Kinsler and Taylor Teagarden and Chris Davis anchoring the lineup, and C.J. Wilson coming in to get the save in game 4, that would probably come close.

MLB - Rangers (softspot for Astros)
NFL - Cowboys
NBA - Mavs
NHL - Stars
EPL - Blackburn Rovers
MLS - FC Dallas
DBL - Borussia Dortmund
Serie A - AC Milan
French Ligue 1 - Bordeaux
Dutch Eriedivisie - PSV
Mexican League - Tigres
Argentine League - Independiente

=)

If the Rangers ever win or even go to the WS it would be the greatest thing in my sports life.  I mean c'mon with the Cowboys there's a little bit of an expectation.  The Stanley Cup was absolutely amazing, but I've followed the Ranghers longer and more pasisonately than any other franchise or sport.

Yeah, well at least I'm housebroken.

Rangers and Reds
Are the only two teams I've followed with more than attentive interest.  Was really into the Phillies in the late 1940's and early 50's then began to attend some games in Cincinnati (but lived 140 miles away).  First thought about the Rangers when I moved to Tulsa in 1976, then really got interested in them ten years later when we moved to Arlington.

Of course the Big Red Machine in the 70's was pretty much a winner, but lately I realize I follow the game for the game, moreso than "my team".  Maybe the Rangers will become a winner before I lounge under a dirt blanket.  I hope so!

NBA - Mavs & Lakers (Huge Kobe fan)
EPL - Man City

I guess that's not too bad of a list - lacking in recent championships, but mostly all competing for the playoffs/bowls with only a couple crap teams.  Thank god for georgetown's resurgence, since they were absolute shite when I was there (I graduated during JTIII's first year).

by thedirkatron on Oct 15, 2007 1:04 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

again
people keep thinking this.  Why?  You realize that it would take a conspiracy of all the coaches voting against USF and dropping them for no reason a lot.

The computers are almost unanimous (5 out of 6) in saying USF is #1, not even #2.

by ab03 on Oct 15, 2007 9:50 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well
I just look at the remaining schedules for teams like LSU, Cal and USC and think they've got a definite shot to leapfrog USF.

They've all got a lot of big games left on their schedule, the kinds of games that will significantly help their power rankings if they win out, whereas USF has, what, one ranked team left on their schedule (and that's only if you really count Cincinnati as a "big game")?

USF has a shot, don't get me wrong, but it wouldn't surprise me in the least to see LSU, OU, Cal, USC or even Oregon leapfrog them.

And if Arizona St. wins out (a very unlikely scenario given their remaining schedule... Cal, USC an Oregon left) they'd HAVE to leapfrog USF, right?

The 40 trumps all!!!

by thedirkatron on Oct 15, 2007 11:24 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Remember
The Bulls are in the Big East... that's a "power conference" as well, and a big recruiting chip. USF probably deserves to be top-ranked more than Ohio State, since the Bulls own wins over Auburn and West Virginia (both on the road) while Ohio State has wins over Purdue and... umm... well, I guess Washington is pretty decent.

by Inkara1 on Oct 15, 2007 11:42 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well
the Big East is a BCS conference, but I hesitate to label them a "power conference".

They do compare pretty well to the Big 10, but the SEC, PAC-10 and Big 12 are all clearly better than the Big East, imo.

Again, I'm not saying I hope USF gets leapfrogged, or even that they deserve to be... I'm just saying that I think there's a very good chance they will.

I'd actually love to see USF in the title game. I'll take an undefeated team from a "lesser" conferene over a one loss team from a power conference any day. Heck I wanted Boise St. in the title game last year.

The 40 trumps all!!!

by thedirkatron on Oct 15, 2007 11:48 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

It will be interesting...
I would not put it past the BCS to screw USF and have USC jump them and play OSU if they both win out but who knows...if USF wins out I think they get in.

as a fellow Aggie
And a fan since the SWC days. It just strikes me as incredibly odd that our basketball team has evolved into a burgeoning powerhouse, while the football program is a complete laughingstock.

When Javorskie Lane guaranteed a victory last week, I thought two things. (1) we aren't winning this game (2) have we really fallen so far that we now have to guarantee wins against Texas freaking Tech?

Fran has got to go, and if it happens tomorrow it will be too late.

Anyway my teams are Cowboys, Rangers, Mavs, and
Aggies.  Pretty frustrating group - especially because I didn't really become a Cowboy fan until a couple of years after the Oilers left Houston - so I didn't get to enjoy the 90's championships.

Worst sports memory ever: watching the Bills complete the historic comeback against the Oilers in the playoffs.

I will say that I'm not a *real* Bobcats fan yet..
but I've never had a favorite NBA team. I adopted them when they were brought in to the league.

The Canes are formerly the the Hartford (CT) Whalers

Ohio State football is on TV every weekend (Much like the large number of Braves fans spread out all over the country.)

UConn basketball = self-explanatory

Texas Rangers = Family friends w/ the Valentines. Bobby was with them Rangers when I began to understand the whole concept of sports, so that was an easy choice. I stuck w/ the team even after they fired him. It would have been easy to become a Yanks/BoSox/Mets fan up here, most are. Hell no, I'm the Rangers biggest fan in the Northeast.. I'll go ahead and guarantee that.

Are you kidding me?

Why am I required to like every team in my hometown in order to be considered a real fan?

I became a fan of the Rangers because I expanded my baseball boundaries beyond the Bay Area. I was a fan of baseball, and as a result became a fan of the Rangers.

If you ask me, it's actually rather lazy to only like the teams in your own backyard.

Oh...and I became a St. Louis Blues fan in the early-80's. Go tell me when the San Jose Sharks came into existence, and if I should change allegiances and become a 'true fan'.

My teams
MLB- Rangers
NFL- Cowboys
NBA- Mavericks
NHL- Stars
NCAA Football- UT & Alabama
NCAA Everything Else- UT-Arlington
EPL- Liverpool FC
MLS- FC Dallas

Other than Liverpool's FA Cup win in the 2005-06 season, the last title/trophy by any of my teams would have been UT's football title and the Stars' Stanley Cup win.

At least I have gotten to see three of my teams play for a trophy in the past two seasons- FC Dallas lost the Open Cup final earlier this month, Liverpool won the FA Cup and Community Shield, and lost the Champions League final (I wasn't following soccer they won the CL in 2005), and the Mavs lost the NBA title. Even losing in the finals is better than not making it there in the first place.

So, you mean
other than two championships last year, you've had to wait five whole years since your last championship? Sorry if I don't tear up. :)
