A "sleeper" camdidate within the Yankees.

Boy the Rangers blew that one. But hey, who needs him, we have Ron Washington! One of the top 3 managers in baseball, according to some manager of the year ballots.

sleeper candidate
there's no way he was in serious contention for the yankees job.

It's up on the Kansas City Star site right now. They will be making an announcement later today.

And I don't know that you can say it's out of the realm of possibility he was being considered by the Yankees. He has a long history in the organization.

Mattingly / Girardi
are way ahead of everyone else.

It's not out of the realm of possibilities, but it was probably extremely unlikely.

KC is the next Braves?
I think this is a really good fit for both folks.  The reports about Hillman is that he emphasizes player development, delegates authority, and stays very level headed.

I think he didn't get the Rangers' job because there were echoes of Buck in his approach and mannerisms.  Nevertheless, he knows what a top-notch organization looks like.  I think he'll continue to bring credibility and professionalism to the KC org.

Besides, it's nothing for him to fly from KC to Austin via Southwest.

I can't wait to see Reeves article about this.

except something scathing when after two weeks in 2008, The Royals are 6-2 and the rangers are 2-6.

NYC
Bad timing on Hillman's part.

If he was a candidate for the Yanks, he could have made tons more of money, which, btw, seems to be important to him.

by LBrooks on Oct 19, 2007 5:12 PM CDT reply actions

It wasn't bad timing on Hillman
The stinking ass NYC team wasn't going to hire him anyway. And money is not the issue with Hillman. The issue is the Rangers tried to pull a fast one on him and not offer him the money he should have been paid.

Hillman and Money
Personally, when it comes to Hillman, I think money was the key factor.

Look at last year......he came off a winning season in Japan where he made a million bucks managing.

He interviewed with 3 teams - Texas, Oakland, San Diego.  None of them hired him.  I figure he didn't get hired here because he wanted more money than the GM is making (in Texas, anyways).  Not saying that about Oakland or San Diego.

So, he goes back to Japan for 1.5 million.

Now, I guess he feels he's accumulated enough of an nest egg to join the MLB fray.  I wonder what KC is paying him.....for a guy who has neither played, coached, or managed in the Big Leagues.

Congrats KC
Smart decision and good move by Dayton Moore and the Royals. Hillman is a proven leader with exceptional baseball experience and has proved he can manage a baseball team. The Royals signed a gem for a skipper.

To bad for the Rangers... not only to bad, but down right ignorant was Tom Hicks and JD in thinking Ron Washington was better.

They both screwed the Rangers up by not hiring Trey Hillman when they had a chance. I get so disgusted when I think that the Rangers could have signed Hillman to lead this team. But, Hicks and JD felt Hillman wasn't worth forking over more money than what it would have cost in getting Ron Washington.

Another horrible decision by Rangers management. Makes me want to puke.

Futhermore
I have absolutely NO faith in Ron Washington as the skipper and leader of this team. I need another scotch (a double).

Hey, this just in
Wash doesn't need your "faith"...lucky for us, he has years of baseball knowledge and I hope he irons out some of the wrinkles and bad decisions he made and gets better as a manager.
