Doh
He's my choice for CF too.  Silver lining: this makes him cheaper and easier for us to get.

LOL
Why, does he suck?

I mean why do you want him?

Just read Chase Irwin's post
Yeah, he does suck.

No doubt you will retriple your efforts to "bring him to Arlington".

Along with getting Ron Washgington a new extension, and trading Hak Blalock, Ian Kinsler, and any of our now gutted remaining talent just to seal the next five years of losing.

You beat me to the diary, williamos2
I don't understand how this makes him more attractive by being cheaper?

He'll be cheaper, because he sucks, and because this is the 2nd time he has been caught using illegal PED's to propel himself to be a mediocre-average player.

Cameron '07 OPS+: 103

This is a guy who is league average IN THE NL. He would be well below average if he had to face Felix, Lackey, Escobar, Haren, Blanton, et al on a regular basis.

35 years old next year, I'd bet good money that he has lost at least a step.

I hope this quells any talk about him to Arlington.

Sideshow ... onto 800. You can do it!

Rationale
It is very likely the Rangers are going to sign a big name CFer this offseason.

Do you sign Aaron Rowand or Torii Hunter to long deals that will inevitably end up being $10-15 million/year when they are old and really bad?

Or do you sign Cameron for 2 years at $4-5 million/year, hope that last year was just a blip due to injuries?  If he's good, then you have a productive CF who would make for a nice trade chip.  If he is just old and bad now, you really aren't out that much.  And there is a decent chance the Padres don't even offer arbitration after this.  The downside risk is much lower with Cameron than with Hunter or Rowand.  (also, if he gets busted again, I don't think we'd be out the money if he's suspended)

I don't necessarily think that Texas should go out and sign someone.  But it seems pretty obvious to me that they will try to.  And I still think Cameron is the best option, with age, price and risk considered.

Sorry, I wouldn't cave in
I don't buy this "Rangers are going to sign a big name CFer," therefore they should just pick the best of the worst ... fuck that.

If none of those players make sense, which none appear to other than Fukudome, then you don't just spend your money for the hell of it. Financial flexibility is something that should be coveted, not squandered at first chance.

I'm not sold on Cameron, Rowand, Hunter, or the rest of the big names, and you probably won't be able to convince me because I've already considered it from most angles and read most of the discussion threads pertaining to them.

financial flexibility
I agree with most of your post, especially the part about the importance of maintaining financial flexibility.

The one possible exception in the FA market this offseason is Andruw Jones. That guy is a truly elite talent and I'm not sure if his horrid performance last year was the beginning of the end for him, or just a blip on the radar. He is certainly young enough and talented enough to have 5 or more great seasons left.

This guy can be a legitimate GG centerfielder and 40-50 home run threat in the middle of the lineup. He hit 51 hr w/ 136 OPS+ in 2005 and 41 hr w/ 126 OPS+ in 2006. I'm not saying that I would definitely pay whatever it takes to get him, but if there is a free agent out there that could potentially be a cornerstone of the next good Ranger team, I'd say Andruw is that guy.

Uh uh

Cameron
I say sign him cheap, give Murphy a 25 game trial in CF and trade him if Murphy does well.

blech
Was never a huge fan of signing Cameron, this makes it a big NO. First, no cheaters, thank you very much. Second, last year he showed significant signs of decline. These signs are going to be exacerbated next year if he isn't able to take his "stimulants" any more. Pass.
But that river of tears has dried for all of us.
