Rangers re-sign Vazquez

Per mlb.com, http://tinyurl.com/yvg957

No specifics as to salary in the press release, but seeing as it's a one year deal, and Vazquez was eligible for arbitration, it can't be too much. He works as a utility infielder type, I suppose.

They also signed 27 year old infielder Ryan Roberts to a minor league deal with a spring training invite. Roberts was .077/.200/.192 in 26 ABs over the past two years in Toronto, and had a .769 OPS in AAA last year. He went to UTA.

zywica wont be happy =p
or whoever it was that seemed to hate giving a single AB to vazquez, maybe it was someone else.

anyway, it seems like we should have been able to find a better utility IF, but since I cant name one of them... i guess its ok.  just hopefully we wont have massive injuries that get im 300 at bats or whatever.

Vazquez isn't so bad...
It's just that, like Buck, Wash gets a man crush on some players and seems blind to their talent level and overplays them.

Vazquez
Before guessing his ABs (or whether anyone has a mancrush on him) shouldn't we see if Hank plays more than he did in 2007?

by hightowersmith on Nov 21, 2007 7:52 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

overplays them?
...wha...

hank blalock was practically gone for the season... and travis metcalf was a rookie, Double-A call-up...

i suppose hairston jr. was a better option at third base?...

young to 3rd; kinsler to SS
solves a couple things. Insert anyone other than vasquez, relaford, or hairston at 2nd, and you'd be better off.

Wash overplays scrubby utility guys. What is so hard to grasp about that?

Yeah that would be me
Bleh, for a better UIF, how about Macier Izturis?

As far as giving ABs to Vazquez, yeah, in all honesty I'd rather not give a single one to him, but my issue is mostly that you have a manager that LOVES to play this player (the player in this role), so why not upgrade it?

an alright
re-sign i suppose.  I mean it cant hurt that bad.  German Duran can play another year in the minors or they can bring him up if vazquez is hurt or if kinsler or young get hurt.  But i'm sure everyone here will hate it.  Not to mention, what is up with everyones beef with HUNTER.  I mean this team is making him priority number one.  Would you rather have lets say, Corey Patterson be number one priority?  Or how about some other crappy player?  Hunter is not a craqppy player and I think all of you on this thread should stop bashing the guy.  He is gonna be great.  He is durable.  He could last in center longer then alot of people think.  They

would i rather get kicked in the nuts
no.  but i'm a little confused.  are my only options to get kicked in the nuts or punched in the face?

how about, we don't waste money on any big contract guys this year and wait till next year?

maybe fukodome, but he'd probably be priced out of our range.

and actually, i'd rather they get rowand and I personally think they should get andruw jones (despite a lot of evidence and logic telling me he's done)

what for what?
We have an obvious need and a great ball player to fill that need.

You need depth at all positions
so a good signing in my eyes.  He carried alright at times and Duran can compete with Vazquez sometime next year.

That won't be much of a competition
"On-base percentage is great if you can score runs and do something with that on-base percentage," Baker said. "Clogging up the bases isn't that great to me."

.230/.300/.373 is depth?
.230/.300/.373 equates to carrying yourself alright?

by Brett Perryman on Nov 21, 2007 8:11 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Not in my opinion
But everybody around here keeps trying to tell me that .224/.278/.349 is great trade bait, so I don't know.

I think
Kendall was terrible throwing out base runners last year.  At least Laird has that going for him and he is quite a bit younger.

by OKC Ranger Fan on Nov 21, 2007 9:05 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I'm skeptical of Laird's value too
But he does have two things going for him that Vazquez doesn't. One, he's a catcher. That's a whole different deal from other positions. Two, he did put up a .296/.332/.473 line in 2006, so you could at least kid yourself into thinking that he could repeat that as a half-time guy. With Vazquez, you'd have to be a fool to think he'd produce that far above an infielder's average level.

vaz
I didn't see any reason for the Rangers to resign Vazquez, and I thought he might be cut if there was a crunch for a roster spot.  But I guess it is no big deal. Like you have said previously, Duran might be a good fit for the utility role in the second half - getting about 3-4 starts a week.

I was just looking at Vazquez horrible batting line that you posted, and thinking to myself: "what a pathetic excuse for a hitter", then I realized that his line was superior to Laird's in every category.

I also think that the Estrada-Mota deal gives us an idea about Laird's trade value.  JD might not even be able to move him for anything useful at all.
