Santana wants Zito money....

http://www.rotoworld.com/content/Headlines.aspx?sport=MLB&hl=226592

Would/Could the Ranger's put a package together to trade for (and sign) Santana?

Star-divide

What would it take? Hurley, Kiker, Arias+?

Wait till he hits the FA market...
don't give up the entire farm system for 1 year of Santana!

Yea, no chance that is enough.

More like
Kinsler, Hurley, Davis and Andrus....to start.
"On-base percentage is great if you can score runs and do something with that on-base percentage," Baker said. "Clogging up the bases isn't that great to me."

You guys are overvaluing the player.
Any team that trades for him is trading for one season and a chance to extend him.  Nobody is going to give up their top 3+ prospects for that.  You don't decimate your farm for 1 year of anybody.

we got that........

My question is.....
what will it take? Obviously, you have to get an extension in place (7-8 yrs...$150M?), but even though our farm system is greatly improved, do we have enough ammunition to get a deal done?

by tklawless on Nov 22, 2007 8:21 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Wish we did,
don't think we do.  It would take at least Kinsler, McCarthy, Hurley, just to sit at the table.  And that's probably not enough.  Plus keep in mind, they would have zero use for one our prime potential trade chips, Saltalamacchia.  Tough fit, if at all.

Maybe Bedard is the way to go.......
I think he also has 1 year of arbitration left (2008). But, you'd need to be sure he's healthy. He'd also cost way less (in propects) than Santana.

Is this conversation
really occurring?  If so...wow.

Unless the O's
are assured they can extend him soon, I believe they'll move him at the winter meetings.  Hopefully this is a scenario Daniels has worked through in his  hypotheticals.

Santana won't hit the FA market.
If I were the Twins, I'd plunk down the 5/125 without blinking.

If I'm the Angels, I sell the farm, get Miggy and Santana, and extend both of them.  Why would they not extend to play on that team.

santana
zito money would be getting santana cheap. on the open market he will get more than that , and he should because he is a much better pitcher.
Can you please Look into getting a less funny signature? That's sarcasm, btw. - Sharky

if all he wants is Zito money
how does anybody think the Twins won't extend him? which means they don't need to trade him....

by slash on Nov 23, 2007 7:33 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

The twins are going to want position players......
You'd have to start with Kinsler, Davis, and Duran before you even start adding the two pitchers that they also would want.

Money
If the Twins have offered the guy 18 mil a year and his agent has countered with 25 mil a yr., then 20 mil would seem a little bit on the light side.

When it comes to Zito, if I were a reliever, I'd settle for 1 yr. of Zito's contract.

I wiould only hope that
when Santana hits the market, if ever, that hicks spends 200 plus on him.  A true number one ace.  Something we will lack even when Kiker and Hurley are ready.

Santana
I throw top offer to the Twins and top dollar to Johan to extend him.  Period.

What do you expect, another 5 years out of him at a high level, then another 2-4 years at a lower level but still competitive?  So offer them Andrus, Duran, Volquez, Kiker and see what else they want, if they ask for Kinsler, take back Duran, if they ask for Hurley, take back Volquez - add anything else they want at lower levels and get this deal done.  Then extend Santana for 7 years, 160 mil and ride him to an AL West championship in 2 years for a 4 year window with the legitimate chance at winning it all.

By then I'm sure we'll have a 1st baseman and an impact outfielder, so the roster looks like this:

Salty/Teagarden at C
Player X at 1B (Chris Davis? Blalock? Free Agent?)
Kinsler/Duran at 2B
Young at SS (or Arias if Young moves to 3rd)
Blalock at 3B (or Davis if we get another 1B...maybe even MYoung at 3B)
Boggs/Murphy/Byrd/Mayberry in 1 OF spot
Free agent/trade acquisition in CF (Andruw? Rowand? Crisp...?)
impact free agent in the other OF spot (Dunn?)
Botts/Teagarden DH

rotation is Santana, Millwood, McCarthy, Gabbard, Volquez/Hurley and our bullpen is stacked with CJ, Benoit, Frankie Fran, Littleton, etc.

I think this team has a legitimate shot at it all...Santana would add so many wins, provide a steady foundation for the other pitchers to follow and save our bullpen's arms...he's definitely worth it

Thank you!.....That is the point.....
Get great players NOW! or whenever you can.....this blog seems to say, well just sit around 'til 2010, things will get better.....with Santana (or Bedard, maybe?) this might be a 90 win team (last years nightmare start not repeated), and shifting our rotation back one spot behind an Ace, could do wonders. We'd still need a CF (Laird/Crisp) and if Salty, Botts and/or a healthy Blalock all flop, maybe another bat.

Maybe not a sure World Series winner, but damn sure competitive, and we all know what can happen when the playoffs start (Angels, Marlins, Cards & this years Rockies).

We won 75 games last year
if we add Santana we win 90?  How does that work.

by Agreen07 on Nov 22, 2007 8:47 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

If you think they'll have.....
the same horrendous start, Blalock missing 2/3 of the season, Millwood/Padilla winning 16 games TOTAL with ERA's over 5.15, BMac winning 5 games....less than 300 innings total from those 3.....Young hitting .200 in April, Cat .140, etc., etc.....Plus the intent to find (any) CF.....but, if you think all the above will happen again, you're right-----there's no point!

and
he would deserve every penny of it.  Well, as much as you can deserve that much money for playing baseball.  He should be the highest paid pitcher in baseball.  Just like Arod should be the highest paid hitter in baseball.  It is a ridiculous amount of money to pay someone and the Yankees are idiots for signing a guy to 10 years when he is already 32 years old, but Santana and ARod are the guys to overpay if you are going to overpay.
