Thomas Paine

I just wanted to write a word of encouragement to all the "bloggers" that have recently attacked by some of the paid "journalists".  One such attack was a comparison of todays bloggers to the pamphleteers of colonial America.  As a teacher and fan of American history I have to point out that this is not such a bad thing to be.  I don't know much about colonial pamphleteers, but I do know that one of those referenced colonial bloggers wrote a pamphlet call "Common Sense".  His name was Thomas Payne.  Kind of an important pamphlet.  I wonder how long he stood on the street corner trying to get anyone to read it.  To learn more about Thomas Payne you could go here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_Paine.  Since, wiki can be a bit unreliable you may want to visit Philadelphia.  This is where Thomas Payne was living when he wrote "Common Sense".  I assume that if you lived and worked in Philadelphia, you already knew this.

Great work Adam.  Keep the chin up, we could use a revolution of sports media.  You just may be the pamphleteer to do it.

I realize you closed comments on a related topic, but I had to mention this.  I don't know if this has already been said.  I am sure the people who got to read the comments of the other thread will let me know if it has.

The reason he closed the comments...
is because I did something I shouldn't have, i.e., I posted some links to brettgardner's myspace page.  It didn't have anything to do with the pamphleteers or cranky journalists bashing bloggers.

And, speaking of brettgardner, maybe we can convince Adam to implement this...

He declined mine as well
and I was trying to be friendly with him at the end of last evening, asking him how he enjoyed Lubbock.  I hope he changes his mind and accepts my friendship.

The thing I like
is that you think you embarrassed me.  You've lost every argument you've ever had with me and you pulled a complete stalker move which abused your position.  Not only do I think you're the worst writer on this forum, but you're also the most pathetic.  Oh goody, another link from the king of the douches.  Let's all go to it because we all know that Ben searches all day until he finds something which tangentially relates to whatever lecture he's chosen for the day.

I realize you wouldn't have the balls to apologize, but it's OK because I'm not some crybaby who cowers in the corner.  The irony is that you give so many lectures about communication technique and yet you commit one of the biggest logical fallacies out there: discredit the speaker.  The substance of any of my comments remains as apropos as ever, and your feeble comebacks remain as laughable.

Like I said before--keep up the funny.

I promise I would never look up your name ANYWHERE.   I couldn't care less about you, but you felt so ashamed of being put down that you had to go to great lengths to attempt to embarrass me.  I feel truly truly sorry for you.

The only one who embarrassed you...
is you. You were caught lying about how great you are and Ben called you on it. You haven't had a educated argument with anyone here to "win" or "lose" anything. All you do is say stupid shit to be argumentative with no substance what so ever.

I may not approve of what Ben did, but it has shown everyone here you are a joke. Keep calling everyone "douche's" and then saying everyone else isn't funny.

Oh...and good luck with that ever so impressive "full time job."

To be fair
I do have a full-time job in which I doubtless earn more than you.  The thing is, I don't care about lying.  It's only people like you who do.  I'm not embarrassed and I never was.  Little nerds like you got so much glee out of it but the thing is--I don't care.  Never did.  If you ever want to have an educated argument with me, I'd invite you to try, instead of your laughably ironic personal attacks.  Thanks, slc, we really needed more of you.  Back to the bottom of the pile with you.

i'll respond to the logical fallacy
you're right, generally criticizing the speaker is a fallacy...except when someone bases his expertise strictly on his reputation, such as a (alleged) JD, work experience on Capitol Hill, and general badassery.

I think it might actually make sense in that case to point out the fact that all of these credentials are false.

Anyway, I hate it when people screw up logic, or worse, use logic (or stats for that matter) completely incorrectly.

The majority of you have behaved like the junior high girls lunch clique.  Someone came here, farted out loud, and you girls pounced with eye scratching, hair pulling, looking down your noses, and giggly banter with each other over how much better you were than the new girl (who farts).

It's you who are pathetic.  Only you can't see it because you've got your heads so much up each others butts.  To the point that an admin violates a trust and a basic premise of personal privacy and rather than have the decency to move on lest this gets further out of hand, you simply move to another lunch-table and get on with your inane attacks on someone who should simply be left alone.

"a trust
and a basic premise of personal privacy".  I didn't use the word sacred, and I didn't say you're the bad guy here.

It's my view that you allowed yourself to be baited into a lapse of judgment regarding your responsibilities as an admin of the site.  I left around midnight so I don't know how the rest of it played out before Adam stepped in, but at that point the personal info was beginning to surface and I recall one of your posts containing links and a reference to your role as an admin.  You've already acknowledged you shouldn't have had any part in that, and that's good enough for me (though you certainly don't need my seal of approval).

by ncrangerman on Nov 24, 2007 7:21 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

you know what
i wouldn't mind if you left either. ;)

the point is, as much as you would like to ignore it, you can't.  its the same reason you felt the need to post about it at all.  its the same reason that if I say "all native americans should get cholera," someone will want to respond to me.  its a natural response in a message board.  and, especially on a message board you frequent so much, its a natural response to want to clean it up.

and, i would like to point out, initially, he wasn't even expressing opinions that we disagreed with.  he was just putting people down, repeatedly.  I think it took him like 3 weeks before he even talked about baseball.  I'm not signing off on what Ben did but, overall, I don't see that we're the bad guys for not ignoring it.

Haha.  God you're so desperate for affection aren't you?  You can easily ignore me.  Somehow a lot of other people manage it.  I don't need your approval for anything I do, and similarly, I don't heed your criticism one bit.  Grow up.

by brettgardner on Nov 24, 2007 7:05 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

also
the reason some of the other boards died was not because of disagreements, it was because people kept making inflammatory posts, putting people down, etc.  Technically, you could blame it on the back and forth, but isn't the blame correctly placed on the people who seemingly intentionally invite controversy...especially when they are just personal attacks made about non baseball related topics.

Ugh

Well...

As author of this diary you can edit the title. Why haven't you done so?

because
I think it should be spelled Payne.  He may have been an excellent pamphleteer, but he obviously didn't know how to spell his name.

I hadn't really thought about to be honest.

I actually
new someone in college that spelled it Caven and pronounced it Kevin.  The professor of the class asked him jokingly on the first day, "Do your parents not know how to spell?"

Thomas Paine
I wonder how many people on this board are fans of The Age of Reason...and, no, that's not a snarky remark about the board's reasonableness.  I would think that a lot of people on this board would be offended by much of its content.

With threads
like this, it will have to be another blog that brings about change in sports media.  I love the information I get from the Statheads on this site.  Being a stathead is a good thing.  I am not patient enough to be a Stathead.  I don't always agree with Adam's opinions, but the guy does an awesome job.  He never presents an opinion without plenty of evidence to back it up.  The most impressive thing is that he manages to stay out of this mindless bickering and resists the temptation to personalize his arguments about baseball.  This kind of crap takes away from LoneStarBall.

Now, don't you think it is funny that Bill Conlin compares bloggers (who he apparently hates) to colonial pamphleteers.  When it was a colonial pamphleteer in Philadelphia (the city Conlin lives and works in) who some would say inspired the colonist to claim their independence by writing a pamphlet.

I almost hate to enter into this, but......
I pay about as much attention to Conlin as I do these bitch-slap personal confrontations. But I do enjoy the Ranger-talk even when I'm not actively posting, so, once again, thanx Adam!

You being
hesitant to join in and say something completely noncontroversial is a perfect example of the damage discussions like the one above do to a forum like this one.
