Kevin Mench DFA'd

Just days after Laynce Nix was designated for assignment, his fellow Brewer and former Ranger teammate Kevin Mench has also been designated for assignment.

No big surprise...I'm guessing the Brewers will try to find a trade partner for him, but will likely end up just releasing him.

Agree with TR's take from today's mailbag.

Man, Mench sure had a nice future for awhile.  I'm sure no one needs reminding of how Showalter gratuitously held his bat out of so many lineups.

Carlos Lee
How does that Lee/Cordero trade look now?  All the guys we gave them are no longer with the team.  Both teams got draft picks, but we got better ones.

That trade helped the Rangers make one failed attempt at the playoffs but at least JD tried.  The cost for that attempt?  One year of CoCo and that's it.  Most under-rated JD trade to date.

Damn that signing sucked.

I think that was a great bargain signing - 3yr/13.5mil with club option for fourth year. Yeah, it cost the Rangers a pick, but this value was worth it.

for a marginal
platoon hitter with limited if any defensive value?  Seems a high price to pay.

yeah
Setting aside his poor start, he was pretty solid after coming off the DL. Paying $4.5mil per year for a proven veteran seems cheap in this market. His defense doesn't bother me at all.

well
if you are going to give the rangers credit for getting some production out of carlos lee, you should give the brewers credit for getting some production out of cordero (for longer).

in the end, if nelson cruz doesn't pan out, this trade will be a big wash.  now winners, no losers

the first time LBrooks suggests a ranger move that should be made instead of bitching and he comes up with that gem.

This is the post to link to next time he makes a junior reference.  i guess the clueless are allowed to critique, too.

5 million?
So, we know Juniors modus operandi:

Sign guys to 1 yr. deals for millions of dollars so he can trade for prospects at the trade deadline.

Last year he spent about 4 million of Daddy Hicks' money on the prospects he got for Gagne and Lofton.

So far, this year he's putting out 5 million (a risky 5 million) to an injury prone psycopath in hopes of getting another prospect that, may or may not become anything.

This act is getting old.

Send this boy to Oklahoma City.

About 8 MILLION

Bradley
He's not a psychopath. Yes, he has anger issues, but he's also been a Roberto Clemente nominee, and put up his own money to open two baseball academies for inner-city kids in Los Angeles.

Gagne got us our likely fourth starter this year, along with a platoon outfielder and an exciting outfield prospect. Lofton got us a bat who's done nothing but rake in the minors. I think that's worth $8 million of Hicks' money.

What's getting old is you calling a grown man a boy just because you're old and bitter.

"Then I met some friends for a beer, went to a BoDeans's concert, and son of a vondruke, if I didn't leave him at the concert hall."

Ok, he's not a psychopath....just a hothead.

You do know that the guy has averaged 45 games for the last 3 years in the 2nd half, don't you?

You're gambling 5 million that this guy can even walk at the trade deadline.

I'd rather put that money in with the ARod money, the Tex money, the naming rights of the stadium money, right in Tommy Boy's back pocket.  lol

Wow, is that a clueless post.
Trading Gagne and Lofton netted the team:
  • a major league ready CF in Murphy
  • a major league ready starter in Gabbard
  • a possible future star in CF in Beltre
Trading Lofton got another solid catching prospect with a real nice bat.

The team added 4 players who have a real chance to help the team, after the two players traded away had solid numbers in Arlington.  What fault could you possibly find with those transactions?

These are exactly the kind of things Daniels should be doing right now.

Tomorrow Never Knows

Let's See Now.....
I remember a few years ago when these 2 trades were being lauded as much as the Gagne and Lofton trades:

Uggie for AGon, Snare, and Will Smith

Everett for Frankie, Webster, and Rupe

Of those 6 guys, 2 have panned out.  Of course, the best one - AGon - wonder boy traded away.

We still have Frankie who has shown he can be a seviceable middle relief guy.

So, between the Everett and Urbina trades we ended up paying about 7 mil for Frankie.

Now, we're paying about 8 mil for Gabbard, Murphy, Beltre, and Ramirez.

This boy doesn't have a clue.

Mench
I'm guessing that he wasn't one of Yost's guys. It was real shitty that in Milwaukee's 3 games in Arlington Yost didn't get him into a game once. I'm sure Mench would have received a nice welcome back from the crowd. Just one of those little things.
