OT: Petrino Splits ATL for ARK

well, if it couldn't get any worse for the falcons it just got a bit easier... this is a franchise in desperate need of rebuilding and having to pay to get rid of Petrino would have only made it more difficult... as well as if he had stayed and picked brohm with their 1st round pick... which, i think, would have been a mistake... either way Petrino is now the head coach of the Arkansas Razorbacks and the Falcons are probably just as glad to not have to pay to fire him...

Petrino is live on espn
yawn...

However, you can't blame him for leaving the suckass Falcons. That team is one sorry ass pathetic mess.

How sweet it is to be a Cowboys fan

Uh..
However, you can't blame him for leaving the suckass Falcons.

You can't? I sure can. I'm no Falcons fan, but I'd be pretty pissed off. It was a despicable move. If i'm Arthur Blank, I'm pissed. If I'm any Falcons player, I'm pissed.

13 games. That's it! How do you take advice, as a college player, from a guy who cut and ran ASAP because he job was too hard. He's going to say he longed for the college game, but we know that's bullshit.
He longed for Michael Vick, and he never got him.

If you accept
that teams can fire coaches midseason, I don't see the problem in coaches quitting midseason for a better job.  Just seems like it should be a two way street.

umm
who in football gets fired midseason?

Let's see
Bruce Coslet, Dave Wannstedt, Butch Davis, Kevin Gilbride, Vince Tobin, Dan Reeves, ...

Umm
all those guys resigned or mutually parted ways...Gilbride and Tobin knew what was coming because they've sucked for so long. No organization has every fired a coach in their first year during the year...

Resigned meaning
they got fired, but agreed to re-sign and still get their contract paid off.

when has a coach
quit in their first season?

by Longhorn on Dec 13, 2007 9:09 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Who cares?
He got a better offer, he left.

Its not like his leaving ruins the Atlanta season or anything.  I just don't get the outrage in a league where folks get hired and fired all the time.

Petrino
walked into a totally different situation than what he thought he was getting himself into at the time he agreed to become the Falcons head coach.

That he's leaving 2 million on the table to leave ATL and come here is pretty telling.

Blank certainly does not appear to be pissed at him. The one he needs to be pissed at, and is pissed at, is the canine executor.

Blank and Vick
He's definitely pissed at Vick. That's not an issue.

You are also 100% correct on the fact that the situation now is not what Petrino walked in to. I've got no bones with him leaving.

However, Blank has reason to be pissed off at Petrino. Blank addressed the Arkansas rumors with Petrino on Monday before the game against NO.

Petrino told Blank that he would not be going to Arkansas and would be back to coach the Falcons in 2008. Blank then went on the air and spoke about Petrino in glowing terms.

Then, he pulls this on them.

Petrino had every chance to let Blank know that he was considering other offers. He told him flat-out 'No' and then walked away. Blank should be pissed at him.

you're probably right
..and after I posted my comment, Blank came out today with some comments w3hich indicate that yeah - he is evidently pretty pissed at Petrino.

Petrino's probably something of a dick but as a Hogs fans, I'm glad he's here.

If any of this is true...
...Petrino really needs a kick in the teeth:

http://www.ajc.com/sports/content/sports/falcons/stories/2007/12/12/deal_1213.html

Here's an excerpt:

After getting the parameters of the contract terms he would be able to offer Petrino, he boarded a private plane with Scott Varady, the school's associate general counsel.

They landed at Fulton County Airport at 1:30 p.m. and went to an undisclosed downtown location to meet with Petrino and his agent. The meeting started at 2 p.m. and did not last long. After a short discussion, Long and Petrino agreed on the basic outline of a deal. The details of the contract were turned over to Campbell and Varady.

Petrino returned to Falcons headquarters in Flowery Branch and walked into McKay's office to resign. He then called Blank. "When he called me for the 30-second conversation after he resigned, I said to him, 'I assume you're going to Arkansas,' Blank told the Journal-Constitution. "He said he didn't know what he was going to do. I swear to God. He never admitted then that he was going to Arkansas."

Very, very unprofessional.

DeAngelo Hall
Haha, that was great. Can't blame him with the way he feels either. Arkansas is going to suck if Dmac and Felix leave...

Hogs
What do you mean "if"??

They're gone.

Yeah, we'll probably suck next year, thanks to the Nuttster leaving the cupboard virtually barren beyond Felix and D-Mac (particularly by failing to recruit/running off any SEC caliber WRs). But Petrino is a solid recruiter and I think we'll be back on track by 2009, particularly if Joe Adams and Tyler Wilson come back into the fold for U of A now that Petrino is in, as is already being rumored.

HAHHAHA
Deangelo Hall pretty much just dominated him on sportscenter...

I love how Hall said that Arkansas won't even be good, just funny that he ripped them because he is pissed at Petrino...

But that would also piss me off to see my coach that was on the sidelines a day ago doing some dumbass Hog dance in a press conference to become the new head coach.

But Petrino is a D-Bag, just like Saben...

Looking forward to the Milton Bradley show this season...

Why not Brohm?
Why would it be a mistake to draft Brian Brohm? To me he is the only sure thing among next years QBs. Having lived in Louisville and seen him play he is awesome. Too bad U of L's defense sucked this year.

other problems on that team
than just QB.

question - does vick come out of jail and still be under contract w/ the falcons? (if they dont release him obviously)

by knockoutking24 on Dec 12, 2007 9:16 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I assume he would still be Falcons property
Going to jail didn't void his contract so unless they release him, they own his rights. I can't imagine they would ever welcome him back, but if the Dolphins keep giving Ricky Williams more and more chances, anything can happen.
