Espn Chat - Keith Law

Rangers items of note so far:

Chris (Waco, TX): Is there an ace in theRangers system and if so when will we see him?

SportsNation Keith Law: (2:20 PM ET ) I really like Michael Main, one of their first-round picks this year, but he's probably 3-4 years out. Eric Hurley's not an ace but he's very good and he's a year or so away.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Jon Daniels (Arlington, TX): How would you rate the job I have done so far? One really bad trade but otherwise not too bad. From the bottom to the top half of farm systems.
SportsNation Keith Law: (2:34 PM ET ) I think you've done a very good job, much better than some of your local writers want to admit. You've got a legit case to say your system is #2 overall behind the Devil Rays'.
Mark Prior: Where do I end up Keith?
SportsNation Keith Law: (2:37 PM ET ) San Diego or Texas. If I'm his agent, I take $400K from San Diego with incentives to go pitch in that park for a year.
I think alot of Prior wishers
arent considering the fact that he is going to be pitching this year to cash in.
That works against us in alot of ways.
Obviously our bad rap around the league for general suckage. But also tBIA isnt the friendliest park, and our anemic (on paper) offense cant be too tempting for him.
Prior
I can't conceive a reason why he signs with Texas outside of huge money, and conceivably it's dumb to take the money now because it could harm his prospects for next winter.
Maybe he'd think doing well in Arlington would look more convincing than in San Diego.
It just makes no sense.  He will not sign with the Rangers.
Maybe the Astros
have a shot.
Id like to see him come to a Texas team and succeed, and the Astros got nothing (at all) to lose.
Nice
Senor Law seems to be very high on our farm system, especially Main.
I wonder how he'd rank our top 10 guys.
Hmm
That would've been a clever comment for say... I dunno... Brett Gardner.
Ouch
The Mayor of Lowblowsville.
I beg to differ.
If it was Mr. Gardner, it would be more along the lines of:
"Good God. You disgust me. How ignorant you are. Go get a bib and some tylenol, you moronic douchebag."
Why do you hate freedom?
Well
I annoy you, not the other way around.  I'm not looking to pick a fight with anyone, though obviously others (whoever that other guy above is) don't share that sentiment.  My feeling is that people take things too seriously.
by brettgardner on Dec 20, 2007 6:25 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs
Oh
So when you call me a moron and an idiot and a creep and a douche bag, I'm overreacting. And misunderstanding your earnest intentions.
Obviously, I should have intuitively known you had nothing but high praise for my meager intellectual talents.
Evidently, "moron" is code for "olive branch."
I stand humbly corrected.
Hmm?
You can think what you want.  I stand by anything I've said.  Just saying you don't annoy me.  Actually, the angrier and snarkier your reply, the funnier it is to me.  Don't misunderstand again, Brian...
"Don't misunderstand again..."
That's terrifying.  Are you going to kill him?
I think
You misunderstood yourself.  It wasn't a threat, just a lamentation.  But hey, welcome to a conversation nobody wants you in.  Later.
San Diego
Doesn't San Diego have a reputation (I think it was started by Peavey after he won the Cy Young) that their medical staff is the best in baseball?  I figure that this would have the biggest effect.
yeah
aki just confirmed it...best medical staff.
Good Pitchers
such as Millwood(2006) learn to adapt and perform in TBIA, or Colorado, or wherever they pitch.  Prior has good stuff, and is a smart pitcher looking for a new start.  If he comes into the Rotation or Pen in June, pitches well, I would have no problem signing him after this season... But a 3-4 year deal would need to be majority incentive based since he has a history, but I have faith that our med staff, talent evaluators and what not could figure out his future with the team and do things properly for the team. He is a good pitcher with strong pedigree that will be cheaper than the other free agent upgrades after this season... Just a thought.
Its time...
I love our system
But I can't see us at #2 overall.
The Reds are definitely better...  possibly the Red Sox, Mariners, Marlins, and a few others my lack of expertise doesn't allow me to name.
Hop on the bandwagon while It's still fashionable: Rickey Henderson for Centerfield in '08!
by BudLight on Dec 20, 2007 6:53 PM CST reply actions   0 recs
Reds are top heavy
top to bottom Id much rather have our system, especially come July when Bailey, Votto, and Bruce are going to be inelgible for "Farm Systems."
Marlins and Mariners arent even close.
We actually have a somewhat comparable system with Boston. Their a little better at the top, especially in the pitching department, but again, top to bottom, we have an advantage.
The same thing can be said for Boston though, come mid season their going to lose Ellsbury, Lester, Bucholz at the very least from their farm system ranks. (For lack of a better term.)
by Nichols22 on Dec 20, 2007 8:28 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs
I dunno
I love our system, but I think I'd trade our system for Cincy's, and possibly a few others. (Boston, maybe the NYY... Colorado, etc.)
Being top heavy is very important in the prospect game, with the rate of attrition as high as it is. And it's especially important to have top guys in the high minors.
A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush and whatnot.
Hopefully in a year or so we'll have those type of high ceiling guys, and hopefully they'll be in the high minors.
top heavy
that doesn't sound like a complaint.  Sound more like the Reds are about to be badass.
by ab03 on Dec 21, 2007 12:26 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs
When it comes to farm systems
I'd rather be top heavy than have depth.  Give me 2 big time prospects and an overall weak system like we   had with Teixeira and Blalock over depth.
