AL Rotation Rankings

Joh Weisman of si has his Rotaion Rankings up and has put our dead last WITH Volquez. He obviously doesn't know anything about this team if he lists Rheinecker and Wright as candidates

Is Millwood really below average?

Did you have Danny Ray rated? Where did he fall pitching prospect wise.

Depends on
what year he is pitching.

Talk about a guy who doesn't seem to give a crap most offseasons.

+ 1

It will be interesting to see what kind of shape he turns up in this spring. EG was dogging him all last year for showing up in bad shape. The Rangers gave the guy the "ace" crown and he's done nothing but eat donuts and hunt as a payback. And NO hunting is NOT athleticism. Do you consider Dick Cheney an athlete??

Ranking
Sounds accurate to me.

I've watched Millwood pitch for 2 years now here in Arlington.  I'd have to think really hard to give him an "average" rating.

But, if I had to give him a rating for how he feels about getting a contract that sets him up for life, I'd rate him A+.

What a pointless article...
thank God FJM took this guy to school for this drivel. I don't even understand why someone would waste his time writing something so arbitrary. Above average/ super duper above average? I don't even think this would pass as being an acceptable diary on here, much less a headline article on the front page of a major news outlet.

I agree BGR.....
mystery on Tejeda & Wright? The only mystery is what other team they'll be on? I'd have to give you at least one more point than Robby/Jamie....Ha!

Nothing against Kam & Rhino but, this guy has to be the only one to equate those 2 with Millwood/Padilla, even as bad as last year sucked!

It was worth an email to the SI editors
After scouring the SBN blogs and doing a fairly careful review of starting pitcher histories among active major leaguers, I've come to a conclusion.  That conclusion is enhanced (or exacerbated, according to your point of view) by 60 years of following Major League Baseball, and thousands and thousands of hours of umpiring, playing at times, and following the authentic baseball analytical work that is extant.

Weisman is one of the prominent reasons your baseball coverage simply lacks credibility.  His tomes on ranking the AL and NL pitching staffs for 2008:

  • Includes pitchers who won't be on rosters
  • Ignores career trended performances readily available with a little research
  • Indicts a few pitchers on grounds that are as shaky as a lava flow
  • Identifies virtually nothing about incoming starters who can pitch higher in the rotation than #5
  • Isolates factual but relatively meaningless information to downgrade some staffs
  • Idles right past the context in which they are pitching (League, Division, matchups)
  • Inflames the non-casual followers of the game
  • Illustrates the quick splash mentality of SI/CNN
  • Infers that he is in any way qualified to make such assessments, and
  • Irritates me that it consumes online bandwidth.
Sorry to use so many I-words, but seriously,
- I hope you get the point.

Just a quick question
Now that everyone has bashed the writer for his lack of knowledge and writing skills (with good reason) does anyone actually disagree that the Rangers rotation is the worst in the AL?
Oh Man!!!!

Yes, I do
TX pitching staff was 9th in ERA in all of baseball after the ASB, 5th in the AL.  Once everyone got healthy the rotation stabilized dramatically and pitched quite well.  The overall numbers reflect a terrible first half, when the team was 29th in ERA despite a solid bullpen.

The reporting here is incomplete at best.  Do the Rangers need more pitching?  Of course.  Will they finish 5th in the AL this year?  Maybe, probably closer to 8th-10th is my guess as they work in a couple of younger guys.  But they are not the worst rotation in baseball, or even in the AL.

others
I think TX has a decent chance to pitch better than Oakland, if Harden keeps up his history; Chicago, they have as many young question marks as TX mixed with older guys declining; KC, lot of wild cards there; if Minnesota trades Santana they might not pitch very well though they have a lot of young talent.

Point is, rotations are fraught with uncertainty, and 2007 was just about a worst case scenario for TX.  There will be some regression to the mean for these guys, as the 2nd half showed.
