Where do you have the 2008 payroll right now?

Assuming we sign a starting pitcher for around $5 million and Broussard gets a $5 million salary for 2008, I have us right around $65 million.  Does that sound right?

by Darrell McKown on Dec 27, 2007 1:54 PM CST reply actions

Probably
Maybe a little less, depending on what the arb figures are...

I need to go make a run at putting together the 2008 payroll...

2010
There is potential there for a very cheap, good young core, plenty of room on the payroll for a major signing.  Of course by that time all of the good players will have contract extensions and there will be a bunch of chaff on the market.

Payroll might go up...
If we sign Kinsler long term and avoid his arbitration years.  I know there was talk about it last year, and nothing happened.  Sure hope JD is speaking with his agent, and making a priority.  Has anyone heard rumblings?

by JB @ Lone Star Ball on Dec 27, 2007 2:12 PM CST reply actions

Perhaps
We could do the same with C.J. if he has a nice year at closer.

by Rangerchick on Dec 27, 2007 4:45 PM CST up reply actions

I'm kind of hoping not...
Not until he can do better outside of Rangers Field... a .675 OPS on the road is not indicative of someone that I think we should be signing long term.

Just that Cot's Contracts really is an excellent site. Lots of good stuff there.

whats really striking...
... is how much we are going to be over paying michael young in the not too distant future... i get that he's the face of the franchise and our best player(very arguable)... and i know management would have taken a huge black eye for letting him go... but god that contract is just going to get worse and worse...

Maybe Young
Can go on the HGH and as an older player start hitting 72 home runs a year?  It's worked with other dudes...

by FuturePants on Dec 27, 2007 3:31 PM CST up reply actions

It's a matter of the timing
of when Young's contract was signed, but he's making exactly what Pujols is making up until '11 ('11 is the last year of Pujols' contract).

by Rangerchick on Dec 27, 2007 4:46 PM CST up reply actions

Young's contract
And that just shows how much the Rangers overpaid Young. It's a good thing the payroll is low enough right now to absorb that contract without any problems.

Kinsler
If i was Ian's agent I would advise him to wait especially if they are trying to lowball him. I know it's a risk but I would go to arb pull a tex move, didn't he go through arb. If he has a good to great year he could cash in make more than the rangers would offer. Hey I could be wrong but this looks like a repeat of last year when they were trying to sign him but he wasn't in a hurry and I think the same goes for now.  This is off topic but a friend of mine went house hunting  with some rich guy in the Westlake area they saw this house in a golf course community turns out it was mark teixeira' s house she said it was nice.

Kinsler's agent
I sat next to a guy at a game that said he knew Kinsler's agent. The guy said that he thought Kinsler was a priority for the Rangers, but I believe he said that Kinsler and his agent aren't in any hurry to sign a multi-year deal. Guy coulda been full of crap, but he also mentioned that he was a rep for a bat manufacturer and named the various players they'd signed to use their product.

Kinsler
If I am the Rangers I want to see him put together a full season before spending a lot of money on the guy. Its not exactly a position that is impossible to find prospects at. We have Duran who is almost ready and if anything Young could move back to second. Heres what I want to see Kinsler do before extending him too much.

Stay healthy for a full year
Get his average up to around .280-.290
Cut down on the errors in the field
Be a more complete hitter not a swing for the fences guy

There were spots last year when he was doing this stuff. But to me he needs to put it all together for an extended period. He hit half his home runs in the first month of the season. Had a nice errorless streak at the end of the year.

If I was the Rangers I would hold off until after this year before broaching an extension. He hasn't done enough in my eyes to get a big extension right now.

So, FOTF was an excellent extension, then?
Cue Athos.

I think
FOTF had done alot more when he got his extension than Kinsler has done so far. He had a nice rookie season that got cut short, a unbelievable first month of 07 and I don't think that necessarily warrants a multi million dollar extension just yet.

by Steven on Dec 27, 2007 5:42 PM CST reply actions

Kinsler was the team's best hitter
The injury stuff is the only thing you can really knock him on, now that his defense has improved.

In april
Terrible against righties
Terrible on the road
Terrible in May, June, and July

That doesn't deserve a multi million dollar extension in my eyes

by Steven on Dec 27, 2007 6:14 PM CST up reply actions

oops
didn't mean to put July on there since he only played 1 game.

by Steven on Dec 27, 2007 6:16 PM CST up reply actions

I don't follow
May, which has been rehashed on quite a few threads if you want to search, was a career low aberration for him and a month that likely won't occur again any time soon.

June was great. An .849 OPS from a 2B is pretty elite.

July? He played one game. Look at the samples.

You're right about the road split. I don't recall that being brought up before. However, he was very unlucky on the road and against RHP(.232 BABIP and .253 vs. RHP).

Would you be opposed to waiting till the ASB to extend him?

by inactive lsb user on Dec 27, 2007 6:27 PM CST up reply actions

not at all
If he comes out the first half of next season and hits a solid .280 maintaining close to his career OBP, plays solid defense, then yeah I would do an extension. But to say May was a career aberration would mean he would have an established career to go off of. He doesn't. That was only his 2nd year. Im not saying he is a scrub and we don't need him by any means but I don't think it would be the smart franchise decision to give him an extension right now.
