You know what,

I think the Yanks could be the worst. I mean, a huge team payroll has to eventually hurt a team, right? It just doesn't make sense.

They signed him

to be a utility OF at 1 million a year. He will likely perform better than our 4th OF.

In 2007, he had a 68 OPS+ (.645 OPS), which was 3rd worst among players with 300 ABs. He was even worse in limited time in 2006. During this century, he has only eclipsed a .750 OPS once (2000). Oh yeah, and he's had a sub-replacement level VORP for three straight seasons now.

Now I'm not a huge fan of Murphy or Byrd, but at least both were better than replacement level last year.

he's gonna be better than our 4th OF.

Worst case, our 4th OF is Cruz or Botts. Both hit better than Erstad last year, plus Cruz is actually a good defender.

This whole anti-Cruz+Botts campaign is getting really weird if you're going to contend you'd rather have Erstad.

David Murphy or Marlon Byrd

Erstad

would be much better than Botts, if only because he can play all 3 OF positions defensively. Botts would be a horrible, horrible, 4th OF.

but there's a reason Darin Erstad was primarily a 1B for 3 years. He can't stay healthy in the outfield.

Seriously...

They have Oswalt, who is only 30 and under a great contract through 2012 (13 mil, 14, 15, 16, 16 over the next five years).

Their farm system is so terrible that I would consider trading Oswalt for a very strong package of prospects at this point.

That won't happen

McClane is like Hicks was a few years ago. The team is terrible and the farm system needs work, but he is afraid to rebuild. As a result he keeps trying to win now which will hurt the team in the long run.

There must be a strong Nebraska Alumni cadre in Houston. And what do you suppose will happen the first time Erstad ranges back to the ramp in front of the wall?

The one thing I'm curious about, will Houstonians reject the "Ersty" nickname? Only in SoCal does a former football player get a Ken and Barbie dollhouse nick.
