Rafa
I still don't entirely trust Hicks, but I'm glad to see that the rift between him and Benitez seems to have calmed down.

As much of a Liverpool fan as I am, I'm almost as big a fan of Benitez. He has a lot of detractors, and he can be a frustrating coach at times, but he's also a very intelligent man, and Hicks would do well to listen to him. I don't think there's a better coach when it comes to the Champions League, and if Hicks and Gillette can give him a few more big-name players (the kind Man U and Chelsea pick up for fun) I think an EPL title isn't far off.

"Then I met some friends for a beer, went to a BoDeans's concert, and son of a vondruke, if I didn't leave him at the concert hall."

I know you didn't mention
the EPL in general, but this was a really big day for Arsenal, with a big second half come from behind 4-1 win over primed Everton and with ManU losing to Aston Villa. With those results (and Chelsea winning), the top of the table looks like:

Club GP PT
Arsenal 20 47
Man Utd 20 45
Chelsea 20 41
Liverpool 18 36
Man City 19 35
Everton 20 33
Aston Villa 20 33

So first of all, with today's win Arsenal goes up 14 points on Everton and Aston Villa in the Champions League qualification (a loss would have kept Everton in the title race at just 9 pts back of first), so only Man City can realistically knock them out of all of that money.

But as long as ManU doesn't run away with things, this could come down to the last weeks with four or maybe even five involved.

Oh and I agree with RCCook just above. Rafa isn't flawless by any means, but I think it would be more likely that Liverpool would struggle to gain CL spots or progress in CL if they changed managers than that they would be bigger contenders. He's a solid guy. Of course he's no Wenger... :)

rotation
so who do you guys want to see in the 5th spot next year?

by meatbonelefty on Dec 29, 2007 11:36 AM CST reply actions

Luis Mendoza
unless they're just itching to spend the money, in which case I'll throw in with Colon providing they do their homework and put in weight + incentive clauses. Otherwise, I can't really see the point.

Colon or Jennings
If we can't get one of them on a one year deal, Robinson Tejeda.

by Adam J. Morris on Dec 29, 2007 12:45 PM CST up reply actions

I like Tejeda,
I'm afraid patience is beginning to wear thin for him as a starter though.  I hope he has a decent enough spring to justify plugging him into the bullpen at the very least.  On talent alone he brings more than White, Loe, Littleton, Feldman, and the last 3 still have options.

by ncrangerman on Dec 29, 2007 12:57 PM CST up reply actions

Well...
Someone has to be there.  Loe would be okay, I guess, but I'd rather see him in the pen.  Hurley isn't ready yet.  Galarraga and Mendoza should start the year in AAA.

I think at least a couple out of Hurley, Galarraga, Mendoza, Mathis and Harrison will be pushing for a look by June or July, and I think Tejeda being out of options makes him worth a look.  And if he tanks, well, that makes it a lot more likely you can get him through waivers.

Tejeda
To me he looks like a Benoit starter kit.

METS - Showing us what not to do.

If you want to see a team on the verge of trouble, look at the METS. They had a payroll last year of $115,231,663. Beltran's salary goes up 6 million in 2008 and Delgado's goes up 1.5 million. I cut out only the proven players and put them in the list. They have John Maine and a fragile Pedro Martinez leading the starting pitching. At catcher they are average. The infield is very good, but Delgado seems to be slipping and goes into prolonged slumps. Beltran is very good outfielder but beyond that they are average.

Unless they harvest the farm system and trade for Santana of Minnesota, they could be a very average team this year. This is the type of thing that can happen to the big market team when they get too dependent on free agents and trades at the cost of the farm system. At least the Rangers have some future stars to look forward to. Houston really blew it with the Tejada trade.
