Cabrera slimming down.......

http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=3140826

The Angels have offered Kendrick, Mathis and one (but not both) of Adenhart/Santana. Would the Ranger's be willing to part with Kinsler, Laird & Hurley (or Volquez)? Some reports say Florida wants to add a lower level pitching prospect (Gallaraga/Pimental?).

I think I'd do that deal, as much as I'd hate to lose Kinsler. Kinsler=>Kendrick, Laird=Mathis although Hurley/Volq probably <Andenhart/Santana.<p> At the very least we could BoSox the Angels and drive the price up on a division rival....any interest?

No No No
Gotta think long term.  Cabrera won't be around when we hope to compete again.

I agree
there is no sense in acquiring him by trading away many of the pieces that are going to allow us to compete.
In two years we could be left with less prospects developing in to major leaguers, and no Cabrera.

Well you'd have to assume we'd sign him long term
if we traded for him.

8/200 or something along those lines.

I think we should have interest in him
-Hes got 2 years left so if you arnt competing in '09  you could trade him and get a good % of the value back
-He cant turn us down like santana.
-He could play 1b and fill a need, and make his defense hurt a little less
-Obviously a huge improvement to the lineup
-We have the pieces to get him without completely tearing apart the farm, and again you could get pieces back if things arnt going well in '09
-You keep him away from the angels.

there are certainly points against it though and honestly once i get past the fact that id like to watch a good team next year, I know its probably not the right long term move.

but id at least check the situation out.  if you could keep hurley and get him for harrison/kinsler/laird/pitching prospect then maybe itd be more appealing.  i would hate to give up hurley at this stage of the game.

in any case I dont think it fits into JDs plan and dont think he would do it even if its a realistic plan.  maybe for the best.

we were discussing Bay on the other forum, I think as a corner OF with a much lower price hes a more appealing trade target.

You're looking at
Kinsler/Salty/Hurley, minimum, for Cabrera.

That's a steep price, but it's certainly similar to the Angels offer of Kendrick/Mathis/Adenhart...

I certainly wouldn't be angry if we did that. Cabrera is an elite talent, and those are the scarcest commodity in sports.

The problem would then be that we'd be in "win-now" mode, since we just traded three good young players for one great player. We'd have to go out and sign Andruw/Rowand for CF and possibly Bradley/Fukudome for RF.

salty >>> mathis
if he would have to be involved then i lose interest.

im not completely opposed to trading salty, but only for an equal prospect at OF or maybe SP, not a star rental.

he probably would be the cost though.  cabrera is better than tex and obviously salty has already been involved in that kind of trade.

but yeah, no thanks once you get to hurley and salty.  id just hope the angels couldnt sign him long term.

Really?
That'd be one heck of a high price, as I like all three of those guys from our perspective, but this is Miguel Freaking Cabrera we're talking about. Assuming he's amenable to signing here long term (@20-25mil per year), I think you've got to at least consider it.

Cabrera is an absolute stud, and he's only 24 (!). He's the kind of superstar talent you build a team around.

No, no, no
Don't trade for good players.  If we hold tight, we'll compete for the division in 2012.
