Potential Tigers/Marlins blockbuster

Not sure whether this is just a ruse by the Marlins to smoke out the Angels and Dodgers, or if this is legit...

But Ken Rosenthal says the Marlins and Tigers are talking about a potential blockbuster that would send Miguel Cabrera and Dontrelle Willis to the Tigers, in exchange for a package of young players that would (according to Rosenthal) presumably include Cameron Maybin and Andrew Miller.

Given the Marlins' demands thusfar, it seems like there would have to be a lot more going from Detroit to Florida as part of this deal, and I'm not sure that the Tigers have enough pieces to get a deal done (remember, Rick Porcello can't be traded until August, 2008, so he can't be included).

Can PTBNL
work to hold off until August 2008, or is there some timeframe that the player has to be named and exchanged?

Nope
6 months.

Conceivably, they could agree to the trade now, but not make it official until February whatever, and include Porcello as a PTBNL then.

But I don't see that happening.

Agree in principle
pending some really long physicals.

Maybin and Miller...
is a good start. If they included Jurrjens or maybe Tata and (1B) Larrish, I would think that would be enough. D-Train has a lot of question marks.

Maybin + Miller > Adenhart + Wood

Stupid Scout.com
thanks AJM. Tata's probably not rated near as high.

BUT
Adenhart and Wood is just for Miguel.

What can Willis fetch on his own?  Could Willis on his own make up the difference of Maybin/Miller and Adenhart/Wood???

I think Willis
more than makes up that difference. Which is why the Tigers would need to include more. Do Rayburn or Thames have any value? They seem to be without jobs in DET. Zumaya or Rodney?

Wow
The Marlins should jump at that.  It sounds like the Tigers are going for it, as a team in their position should.

I personally
would rather see Adenhart and Wood with other prospects for Miguel and then trade Willis to the Yanks for Hughes and others (if Boston gets Santana).

They would have a stacked system and Adenhart and Hughes would be huge for their future.

i don't think...
the Yanks would part with Hughes for Willis. But i DO think splitting the two would get them more in return.

Yankees
They wouldn't have to part with Hughes.  They could get Willis for Eric Duncan.

Porcello
Could be added as a PTBNL, right?

If so, those players and some cash would be a great trade for both teams.

Oops
I just saw the answer above. Sorry.

Buster Olney
Mentions that as well.
I don't think the Angels would have any issues locking Santana up long term.  With all they've done to try and improve the team, he would have to be very willing...

Plus, remember the talks about how Santana would be interested in following Hunter?  I don't have any link on that.

Bedard News
From Amy Nelson (espn.com winter meetings blog):
Potential deal: Bedard goes to the Dodgers, and Matt Kemp and Jonathan Broxton head over to the Orioles.

I've liked Broxton from what I've seen of him, that's a decent haul, but I wonder how much more the O's could get for Bedard.

Not much
Look at what the Twins may get for Santana.  Teams just aren't that willing to trade their young guys anymore, no matter who you dangle in front of them.

So then the question becomes...
is that enough for the O's to pull the trigger?

Well
Wait for the Santana deal to happen.

There's a reason the Twins are still working on this, after sitting up all night with the Yankees and Red Sox fighting over him.

But he's going to set the market.  Bedard and Haren will only happen afterwards.

Hard to believe Buchholz never went on the table, if reports are to be believed.  Johan freaking Santana doesn't pry him away?  Quite surprising.

Great deal for the Marlins...
Maybin and Miller will be beasts.
