as weird as this may sound...
...there's something psychological with gagne... i remember a few times he was brought into the game in a non-save situation and almost blew it for us...
and he never seemed comfortable as a setup man with the sox...
i dunno... he kinda had a loopy season in '07. certainly don't think he's worth 10 mil, though...
...think doug melvin's job is on the line?

I think Melvin is definitely feeling pressure
I think Gagne is a roll of the dice though, especially for that kind of money.

Peripherals tell something too. He had the same walk rate and struck out a higher percentage of batters in the second half. Also, his BABIP skyrocketed in Boston. It was .197 in Texas (a little low IMO compared to the other pitchers), but went up to .427 in Boston (extremely high). I think defense contributed to the extreme increase in his hitability.
Furthermore, he was really bad in three games in the second half. On August 10th at Baltimore he allowed four runs in 1/3 innings, on August 17th against the Angels he allowed three runs in an inning and on September 18th he allowed three runs in an inning. After his second poor outing his ERA had skyrocketed from 2.16 when leaving the Rangers to 4.12 just two weeks later. All three of the rough outings turned into blown saves with two ending in losses. Outside of those three outings though he was pretty solid.
Considering that he really only had one bad outing as a Ranger (July 23rd), I could see signing him to a 1 year 10 million dollar deal. In fact, that's probably about what I think the Rangers should have offered.
