OT: Barack Obama/Nick Saban

I've been a little tired of all the criticizing of Nick Saban for what seems to be standard operating procedure among coaches anyway..including playing over and over again the clip of him saying "I will not be the Alabama head coach"

Just wondering if Barack Obama will get the same treatment.

Actually, I think he was referring to the character Baraka from the old Mortal Kombat video game...who would be an upgrade over the current prez.

We could have a killer cabinet.

This will be an interesting race
Both sides should have more palatable candidates, to me anyway, than the last 2 elections.  Obama has the kind of speaking ability that only comes along once in a generation, like Reagan or Kennedy.  I've always though Clinton is smarter than her husband in some ways.

On the GOP side, the recent soul-searching of the party should produce a better platform that relies on something other than Democrat bashing, and I like McCain better than Bush 8 years ago.

of reading the Bible, but you are on your own on this one.  These are not the views of the typical Christian.  Yes, God puts in and removes government heads both good and bad(Romans 13:1), but you would have a hard time finding scripture that supports the claim that God is a Republican.  I am a Republican and I am a Christian.  We are all made in God's own image (Genesis 1:27).

YOU should re-read it
Pay close attention to what Jesus Christ says and does.  90 percent of it is about being inclusive and sharing wealth.  He couldn't stand poverty or self-righteousness.  He encouraged everyone to love those who were on the margins of society.

What do you have to say about that?

I'm pretty sure
most of the gay hating is old testament.

You know, the same testament that gave us God the genocidal maniac.

Jaramillo says it's all still there (with Sosa): the bat speed, the work ethic, the body, the will.

I thought
God and Jesus had the same views on all subjects? So God hates fags but Jesus is cool with it?

by shallrelicme on Feb 12, 2007 7:54 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Apparently
or Jesus was too busy banging Mary to worry about telling his peeps to write about hating fags.  Maybe Im wrong, but I dont think there is much of anything in the New Testament about homos.

If you read the old Testament, God is more than a bit of a Psychopath.  Jesus is a much kinder, gentler.   Maybe his abusive father beat it out of him.

God = Jesus
They do share the same views.  A Christian should follow the teachings of Christ, which are in the New Testament.  God doesn't hate, period.  He loves everyone.

It seems to me that the Christian Right ignores a lot of what Jesus said.  If he were to come back today I think they'd reject him outright.  Pat Robertson would call him a Communist, no doubt.

by Dustin on Feb 12, 2007 4:54 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

History
has shown that the Christian faith flourishes when oppressed.  I think it is a mistake for any political party to claim that the other has "forgotten the teachings of Jesus".  Was it Charlamagne (spelling?) that made Rome a Christian nation and then proceeded to corrupt the Christian faith in order to make more money and gain more power for himself.  Look at the Church of England or the Catholic Church at times.  Their abuses of power are well documented.

Correct...

Personally, I'm somewhere between agnostic and deist on the concept of a god/God- I think it's more likely there is a God than not, but I'm not entirely sure. And if there is a God, I believe he/she/it doesn't subscribe to any particular religious faith.

My own personal belief system is a mix of Christianity, Gnosticism, Taoism, astrology, and Discordianism- I found what I liked about each, and incorporated them into some semblance of a faith.

As for the "not all religious people are fundie Republican nuts," I agree. My best friend is a devout Southern Baptist, who works at a Christian ranch for troubled teenagers. He's also a moderate Democrat.

If you believe in the Mormon faith, you also believe that Christ came back to earth around the year 400, and appeared to Native American tribes in North America.

Personally, I think if Christianity is legit, and Jesus does come back, he'll still face the same persecution by other religious types that he faced the first time. Pat Robertson, Jerry Falwell, and James Dobson- the modern-day Pharisees. America- the modern-day Rome.

when he returns it will not be to minister to the world like it was the first time.  It is explained that he will return "like a thief in the night."  We won't see it coming, but "every knee will bow."  Another words we will all know it.  There won't be time to persecute or follow.  We will all be lead to where we have chosen to go.  It will happen when there are no others to bring into the fold.  So in another words, until it does happen there is work to be done.

It is a lot easier
to not really form an opinion, but go with the "flow" and just say "there is no god."  It seems to be the "cool" thing these days.  It always cracks me up that when someone doesn't understand something then it has to be that those that do must be lemmings, sheep, whatever critical word used.

And as BD pointed out because you do or do not believe in God doesn't automatically throw you on the political right or left.  To me politics is a LOT more gray then there is black and white.

If you go back to the roots of this country it was built on religious freedom - and that can be not believing, believing, or whatever your stance is.  There is so many more people that DON'T fit in these little boxes that are portrayed about religion, political affiliation, etc. then do by a long shot.

Why try and force an opinion on someone or ridicule their stance?  Live and let live.  Buy a VW Bus, paint it in vivid colors, and roll on baby.  Roll on

there are too many tenets of the major organized religions that seem to disagree with this philosophy.  It's odd because most preachers or holy men are amiable and nice people but I can't get it out of my head that they are all working to convert me or "save" me because I don't believe the same things they believe.

I think this is why you have the backlash against religion.  its not just, "i'm different," it's the perceived "i'm better."

I agree
there is a lot of people out there that try and "force" their views on you.  Their way of delivering the message, good or bad, shouldn't change the actual meaning though.  I personally can't stand for anyone to tell me how I SHOULD believe whether I agree with their point or not.

I care about
other peoples salvation.  If there is a cockroach in you sandwich, do you want me to warn you?  If I warn you, am I saying I am better than you?  Which is more wrong, to not say anything and hope I am wrong or to warn you just in case I am right?

yeah?
well what if i warn you about the evils of christianity.  that if you keep believing what you're believing, your soul will be damned and you will definitely go to hell.  does that sound helpful to you?

its not a cockroach - its like me saying "i wouldn't ground your kids - he's going to end up a bad man when he grows up."  the correct response should be, "mind your own business, you don't know what you're talking about anymore than me."  and, do you see how advice like that sounds patronizing?

I disagree Dan
I think it is a lot more difficult to say "there is a god," because a lot of that statement is based on faith.  Faith is hard to explain and understand.

Honestly I am probably in the worst place of all - somewhere in the middle, but I think it is a lot harder to have faith then to say I can't see it and put my hands on it therefore it must not be true.

It is a fascinating debate to say the least.

Being an Atheist
is actually a statement of faith.

There is no rational proof of a God.

There is no rational way to disprove the existance of a God or Gods.

You think it's cool to be
one of the most hated minority groups in america? I'm sorry but I was born an atheist. You are right in that this country was founded on religious freedom which also includes freedom from religion. Many would love to change that last part. The main reason I am libertarian rather than republican is because they always throw their religion in everyone's face. That and I have nothing against gay people and I treat them as equals.

Given the voting outcome ...
... in the states that have sought to ban gay marriage, or even civil unions, has been staggeringly in favor of such bans, I'd have to disagree with you there.  Most people might not see that as a form of bigotry, but denying certain rights or privileges to people because they are different is text book discrimination.

A side note
A couple that lives down the street from me had a sign in their yard during the Prop 2 initiative here in Texas that had the clever Adam and Steve saying on it.

Anyway, they are obviously against gay marriage and want the state to make it illegal but here's the kicker.....the man is African-American and the woman is white.  I have to wonder how they would have felt in 1967 when the state of Texas told them they couldn't get married?

Most hated groups in America
I thought you were referring to Christians for a minute. In my experience, as a Christian, people immediately assume that I'm shallow-minded, judgemental, and ignorant and I'm treated with contempt. I think the prevailing attitude in this diary does nothing to make me believe differently. Please let me say that I in no way want to condemn anyone, and I don't look down on anyone who believes differently than I do. I try (emphasis on try) to live my life in a way that is congruent with the teachings of Jesus (who truly loved everyone and was the hardest on the people who were judgemental). My goal is to be good to everyone that I meet...not convert everyone I meet. In my experience, most Christians are like me...as with so many things the people who are the loudest and most shrill are the ones that get the most attention. Just know that the guys you see on TV who think they are entitled to light the fire for hell are not your every day Christians.

by cosa on Feb 12, 2007 3:13 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

this is true
i do believe that a lot of christians hold your views.  however, i feel like if i forced you to answer, you would say that 1)I'm going to hell for not being a christian and therefore 2) I need to become a christian.  or, that in the end, your beliefs are not just your own, but are actually correct because they are the word of god.

is that not true?

"I want him focused on figuring out a way to beat that lefty's ass." - RW

by ab03 on Feb 12, 2007 4:34 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Factually correct, but you've got the intent wrong
Christians believe that man was originally created without sin. When sin came into the world (through the choice that Adam and Eve made), that caused a separation between man and God.

The only way to reconcile that separation was for Jesus to die in the manner that he did (why it was on a cross, I don't know, but there were a number of Old Testament prophecies that pointed to how Jesus would be born and die). By living a perfect life and dying for our sins, Jesus paid the penalty for sin, which allows us to have a relationship with God.

There was a former pastor of mine who used to say that Christians aren't better, they're just better off. It's not like, because I'm a Christian, I'm morally superior to someone who isn't one. Still, the Bible is clear that sin has to be punished. If we don't accept what Jesus did as payment for our sins, that means that we decide that we'll pay the penalty for ourselves.

Obviously, I can't prove any of this. It's a set of beliefs that I hold very, very strongly, but that's it.

by mparks on Feb 12, 2007 4:59 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

If "Forced"...
I would say that yes, I do believe I am correct...why would anyone believe something that they know is not correct? I could make the same statement regarding your beliefs. However, I would also say that it's not my call as to who goes to hell and who doesn't. I also don't want it to be my decision. I would like for no one to go to hell. I also would never try to convert someone. If someone I knew well wanted to know what I believe and honestly wanted to know about becoming a Christian then, sure, I would tell that person why it's a good idea. Ultimately, I'm a pretty strong believer in "the measure you use will be used for you also".

Cop-Out
So, my wife says my above reply was a cop-out and that I should do a better job of explaining myself. I do believe in the teachings of Jesus and that when he said no one will make it to Heaven except through him, that holds true. Like Mparks said, the only way to reconcile the world was for Jesus to die for us as a sacrifice. I take this very literally...NO ONE can possible live their life in a way that makes them deserve Heaven. The only way we get there is through Jesus' grace. Peter wrote that Jesus died once for all mankind, and again I take that to mean ALL mankind. In other words, no one deserves Heaven and the only way any of us are getting there is that Jesus sacrificed himself for us all. Whether or not that means people who don't believe in God are "saved", I do not know. I certainly don't know the limits of God's grace. I do know that Jesus was WAY harder on the people that believed in God and were telling others how to live and what to do than he ever was on the people who didn't believe and were living "sinful lives". Because of this, I do not pass judgement on anyone and accept everyone as someone who can't get it right...just like me. I hope that's not too preachy and I hope it doesn't sound judgemental or close-minded...I certainly don't mean it that way.

Cosa and Mparks
finally some people that have got it right!  Thank you for being great examples of the everyday "normal" or "typical" Christian.  Your responses are obviously come from God given wisdom and are well thought out and written in love and concern for you faith.  That has hugely been misrepresented by many.  I really do mean this.  The frustration that I feel when I read some of the hateful, angry, and ignorant responses by people have given under the banner of Christ has been great.  Teachers will be held to a very high standard because the things they say matter.  Thanks again.

I personally believe this site should remain a baseball/sports site.  I have been making it a point to stay out of the religious and political threads.  Peoples minds are not going to be changed.  I skim over the responses usually and try not to comment except to defend my religion from the ones that are tearing it apart from the inside.

Thanks again

Pondering
Don't think there is an FTC law that applies.

Don't think live ones would please PETA.

Get a university to sponsor a test case.

Residential acclimation, may be needed by 2144.

Forego trip to Congo (dangerous, expensive)

Borrow from San Diego zoo.

Buy a DVD of "Congo".

Show it 4,138 times until Bongo gets the drill.

Post signage: "If you can't leave this house without a head, don't enter".

Add photo of a silverback, photoshopped with fangs

Next?

PETA
I'd be dumbfounded if they had a problem. I mean, COME ON PETA. Let's examine the facts:

Guard Gorilla gets
a) Lots of grade AA food and beverages
b) An auspicious abundance of company and attention w/ fellow primates
c) Language (sign) lessons
d) Hello? Gorilla-hookers. And we ain't just talking the same gorilla-hooker over and over (like some 45 year old Nuevo Laredo skank w/ beer-barf-breath and face-stubble and national-geographic-tits that you had to do because you wanted to get laid a 2nd time and you were knee-walking drunk and you had loaned 20 of your last 30 bucks to your irresponsible horndog fraternity brother David Patty, who thought he was slick cuz even though he was a pinche gringo from Paris frickin Texas, he knew him some pretty good espanol and was actually buying in to the ridiculous notion that the 19 year old (heh heh) chica on his lap might just wanna "take it to the next level," bro.), we're talking regular gorilla-hooker rotations, with ample rewards for stellar Guard Gorilla performance. 2fers are not out of the question. NOT out of the question, I'm thinking.
e) Bats
f) Custom-fitted body armor. Like the Chuck D song.
g) Uh, is the gorilla gonna have the benefit of a structured and nurturing environment IN THE WILD?
h) And finally, on that same note, will the wild gorilla get the opportunity to SERVE, to give something back to the world? As veterans Ed, you and I know what a deep satisfaction such service brings. Does PETA want to deny gorillas this same satisfaction? Then they are bigots.

Also, I'm digging the whole Guard Gorillas w/ fangs notion. Good brainstorming, Ed.
