OT: College Basketball - Round 1

Wow.  VCU showed some real chutzpah at the end of that game.  After getting beat for layups two straight possessions, I guess I can see how Duke might play a little bit off of him, but he had no pressure when he stopped at the FT line and took that shot.

Always nice to get Bob Knight out of the tournament as early as possible.  Hopefully nobody want to ask him to do any studio work.  Even though Indiana fired him, I still can disassociate them enough to not hate the Hoosiers.

How about Marquette's inability to score?  they made 15 field goals all game, 10 of them were from 3pt range.  That's just terrible.

As the first major sporting event I've watched in HD, I'm now totally sold on its greatness.

I want HD bad
However, it's an extra $20+ a month on my already bloated cable bill.

HD should just be free, like it's assumed to be regular TV instead of some sort of premium thing. Cant wait for that day. Of course, since cable companies are horrible monopolies, it may never happen if they dont get some competition from the telecoms.

My current plan is to most likely get HD closer to football season, at least experience it for a couple months then drop it.

you know...
does your tv have a HD tuner in it?

if it does, you could buy a 50 dollar or so HD antenna and get fox/abc/etc. off the air and at least get some sports in HD.

Nope
I bought it, kind of unbeknownst to me, right on the cusp of some FCC regulation that mandates all HDTV's have an integrated HD OTA tuner. Which I think started in January 2007.

Before that, it was common practice for the manufactors to sell "Hd ready" sets without a built in HD tuner because of course, it was cheaper. And that's the type of set I got.

I'm not sure how many channels I could get where I'm at, I suspect like two. Still, it'd be two networks with lots of football.

I wish I could find an external HD tuner for less than $200.

Yeah, my roommate and I
got ours almost 2 years ago now, only a 27 inch (not even widescreen) and is only HD Ready.  When we were shopping, it took us a while to figure out the difference between "HD Ready" and "HD Built-In"
At any rate, I kind of wish we at least got a widescreen.  The whole reason we got the HD TV was because of the XBOX 360, and even still, we can't utilize it, because without widescreen stuff is stretched off the screen, etc.

At any rate, I'm jealous of my dad, he has a 55 inch, widescreen, sony, LCD.

Heh
My other regret is not going bigger. I got a 27", but now you can get a 37" (probably about twice as big) for not much more.

But yeah, I researched the 4:3 vs 16:9, and somehow I made the right decision I guess. 16:9 is actually part of the HDTV spec. It's not really HDTV if it's not 16:9.

I got my Tv for my 360 too. Seems a very common thing.

yeah, there is still an insane difference
between the 4:3 in HD and no HD at all.  But you're right, it is not 1080i if its not in 16:9 and if you're not in 1080i, its not really HD.

At any rate, I'll be out of school eventually with a real job and I'll get a good one.

samsung
Samsung DTBH260F HDTV Terrestrial Tuner

You can get them at Amazon for less than $200.  I have one and it works great with a decent antenna.

thankfully...
I had them losing to Pitt in the next round, so I really only lost 1 point there...

hah, go you!
As a Seminole, I obviously have a natural distaste for Duke, so I'm okay with them losing, I just didn't imagine it would happen that fast.

I missed 4 games today
Duke, Texas Tech, Marquette, and BYU.  Considering that 2 of them lost by 2 points, I'm not too disappointed with myself, and all 8 of my Sweet 16 teams that played today won.

obnoxious fans
I hate college bball but I am rooting hard against Florida because there is a guy at work who just won't shut up about them.  He is such a complete jackass (about this and everything else) I would root against them even if I were an alum.

I was 12-4 in day one
and called the VCU upset of Duke.  Fortunately, my four losses will probably lose in the next round (Maryland over Butler; UCLA over Indiana; Washington St. over Vandy; Ohio St. over Xavier).
