Texas Closer-of-the-Future???

There a lot of teams that have theit COTF already picked and primed like Detroit's Joel Zumaya and the Dodgers Jonathan Broxton, even the Cards belive that Chris Perez will be the team's closer in a few year.

So, who is the Rangers COTF? Eric Gagne is only signed through 2007 and still remains an injury risk. Otsuka will be 35 and Japanese pitchers are notorious for regressing in their 2nd year in the league (2X in AL). Plus, Otsuka could be a traded if the Gagne experiment works out. Will Edinson Volquez convert to the bullpen ala KROD & Zumaya and be the Texas COTF? Or are guys like Fransisco, Littleton, or Tejada better bets?

I'm not
sure Littleton's low 90's fastball is going to cut it. Plus, he has a deceptive arm angle which is usually suited for situational MR despite having a changeup and slider. Lefties also have seemed to tee off on him too much in the past.

nah
in his 37 innings, there were exactly 4 extra base hits against him.

four.

noone, lefty or righty, "teed off" against him.

that said, as with 95% of right handers, he is better against righties.

plus, he didnt have the changeup going when he first came up, when he added it into the mix it helped cut down lefties even more.

im not saying hes going to be the rangers closer, but i bet hes more than a situational reliever...

I'm not sure...
that Miggy would cut it as a closer.  He has enough on his plate trying to throw a grounder to first from shortstop.

agreed
its the only way I see him panning out into a legit major leaguer. don't see him making it as a starter for some reason. just wishful thinking.

Yeah
it seems like that would be the best fit for him with the major league team.  We just need some idea on how he would fare in the bullpen, and maybe in that position.

Otherwise, I think CJ wants to be a closer, but he's obviously going to have to have a couple solid regular seasons.

LHP Closers
Lots of lefties that become closers spend a number of years developing... BJ Ryan, Eddie Guardado and Norm Charlton are examples. Billy Wagner is a notable exception (can CJ throw 99 mph?).

I hear proming reports have him throwing abbreviated long-toss w/ a nerf on alternating wednesdays...

I like camo because it makes you blend in. But when you're not in the woods, it does the opposite. Its like, hey, there's an asshole.

Havoc
The best guy on hand for that is Francisco. He's still getting his velocity back from his elbow injury, but he is throwing harder this spring than he was last fall, so people are hopeful. His command still isn't there though.

As far as other popular choices here, Diamond and Volquez, I've been a proponent of Volquez getting a look in the pen since last summer, and I guess because they're so deep there, they're seeming like they're not ready to try that. But I think his talents, at least at this point, fit better there and that his stuff could come close to fitting the closer role if he could just control his FB a little better.

Every time Diamond's name comes up it seems like people suggest him as a potential closer, maybe partly because when he was throwing like 96 (or at least reported to be) scouts were suggesting that. And his velocity would probably pick up in a short role. But his stuff, at least at this point, just isn't dominating enough to even think of him as a closer, imo. His change isn't going to be a knockout second pitch obviously, and his FB is not dominating enough to be like a Papelbon just blowing one pitch by guys. I just don't see that one at this point.

As you know Tejeda just doesn't seem to pitch as well in relief for whatever reason. His stuff is pretty tough if he did, but he just seems to take to starting better, despite what scouts expected.

And I still see Littleton as a setup guy but maybe he'll keep surprising.

how about Kiker?
If we're talking about the long-term future, how about someone like Kasey Kiker?  He's been compared to a young Billy Wagner...

CJ Wilson or Francisco
Franky was talked about a lot as a potential future closer in '04, if he gets back to that level of performance I can see it.

Wilson seems determined to be a closer someday, and willing to do whatever work is necessary to get there, so I won't count him out.

interesting question
personally id like to see them put volquez back there but i dont think they are ready to put him in the 'pen

id say some combo of:
-diamond (still think he shoudl be put in the pen if he does not "get it" this year)
-volquez
-frankie franscisco
-someone aquired in a trade (please get broxton! wont happen but i can wish, right?)

i like wes but i dont think hes a closer - i can see him being a very good setup guy

Closers
happen by accident... a rookie who doesn't fit in the rotation (Papelbon), a starter coming off a surgery (Smoltz, Jeff Russell), a middle reliever/setup guy who steps up his game a notch (JJ Putz), a former starter dumped by his old team for no reason (Robb Nen).  The classic progression of middle-relief, 8th inning stud -> closer is the exception rather than the rule, though it does fit some (K-Rod, Mariano, Brad Lidge).

Heck, the Rangers are drafting in an ideal positions to get a college junior whose stuff fits the closer mold.  Maybe Cole St.Clair of Rice with one of the supplimental picks if he's healthy...

Here is another guy who is really good
Josh Fields of UGA

http://www.brewerfan.net/ViewAmateurPlayerProfile.do?playerId=672&draftId=5

He was great last season, leading GA to the CWS, but he's had an awful start to this year (0-3, 6.39 ERA, but .209 BAA)... he may also slip to a supp. pick

Rice pitchers
They have a really awful track record.

by Adam J. Morris on Mar 15, 2007 3:11 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think Volquez moving fastball,
velocity, and secondary pitchers wuld make him an excellent closer if he finds his location like so many other wild starters have in the pen.

by Havok1517 on Mar 15, 2007 5:48 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Only problem
other than what you mentioned with command is that he doesn't have a good breaking ball yet. His change is nasty and might almost be a worthy second pitch, but I'm not quite sure it's enough to close. And his breaking ball still has a ways to go.

by Brett Perryman on Mar 15, 2007 6:02 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well
BA did rank his changeup as the best in the system. I'm not saying Volquez should be inserted in the closers role right away but he does haave a slider and a seldom used curveball. There have been a lot closers with less succeed. A ton of closers only have slider/fastball combo. Volquez at least has more of an arsenal than that.

by Havok1517 on Mar 15, 2007 6:21 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I don't know if
FB/change is more of an arsenal than FB/slider. Anyway, as I said in my first response, I've been pushing for Volquez to get a look in the pen since about last June, so I'm generally on board with your thought.

Jesse Ingram
Throws gas and has a great slider.  He could be in the mix.  Johnny Lujan is still raw but he has an awesome arm.

Probably
Somebody not now in the system.

If Gagne moves on, and Aki puts up his samurai gear, it depends on how the team fares.  Big winner in the West, no WS, some of the good relievers may be spent for a bat, another starter, or a new closer.  If the team falters, those same good relievers (being the short supply in this half of the decade) can bring rebuild and reconstruct talent.

If Gagne returns to form
and the team looks to be a contender next year, any interest in signing Gagne to a 3 year deal worth around 30 million?

I probably wouldn't pull the trigger unless I see enough from Laird, Cruz, Botts, McCarthy, and Tejeda to think that I won't need to spend big money in the next couple years to fill their positions.  An expensive closer is a luxury a team can afford if they have pre-arbitration eligible players filling a good number of spots on the team.
