You sound
very enthusiastic about the game.

randomness
when i saw how bad a few premium level first basemen were doing, i decided to check out the rest...

lance berkman - .640 ops
albert pujols - .643 ops
mark teixeira - .590 ops
travis hafner - .788 ops
casey blake - .688 ops
paul konerko - .733 ops
jason giambi - .716 ops
lyle overbay - .712 ops
casey kotchman - .735 ops
sean casey - .517 ops
carlos pena - .728 ops
ryan shely - .351 ops
Doug Mientkiewicz- .500 ops
Kevin Youkilis- .735 ops
aubrey huff- .646 ops
craig wilson- .415 ops
scott thorman- .560 ops
carlos delgado- .536 ops
ryan howard- .808 ops
scott hatteberg - .698 ops
adam laroche - .487 ops
conor jackson - .635 ops
nomar garciparra - .796

and 9 others who are actually doing well like  mike jacobs and dmitri young.

lots of good players in there struggling right now.  and thats just first baseman (and a few DH).

kind of eases the mind a bit about tex.  not much though.  is tonight the night he hits a HR >< ?

by DSheppard on Apr 18, 2007 2:56 PM CDT   0 recs

He's
a second half player, but theres nothing to worry about...

Teams aren't giving him a chance to hit one out, there pitching around to get to Sosa...

So until Sosa starts ripping it up, Tex won't see much to hit...

You could put
Barry Bonds or Babe Ruth in their primes behind Teixeira, and he wouldn't hit right now.

Teixeira can't even hit the many mistakes he does get.

Adrian
You forgot to list Adrian Gonzalez and chose to lump him in with the 9 that are actually performing right now.  More salt in the proverbial wound.

I'd love to swap 1st basemen with San Diego.

Really?
You would swap Tex for Gonzalez?  Why?
You using the whole fist Doc?

by Arnold Babar on Apr 18, 2007 3:23 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

because
he's knee-jerking like so many other Ranger fans.

by t ball on Apr 18, 2007 3:26 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

because...
Gonzalez is signed through 2010 with an option for 2011 and he's a pretty damn good player.  Teixeira will be a free agent in 2008 and we'll lose him for nothing.  I think its clear he wants to move on.

Gonzalez will likely never be as good as Tex was in 2005 but I'm beginning to believe that was Tex's career year and he'll never duplicate that either.  I know he won't if he doesn't learn to hit away from the shift.

by kwood on Apr 18, 2007 3:28 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

hey...
considering contractual status for both players, you guys find this a stupid suggestion huh???  or does that not apply to your analysis?

Adrian

Fair enough
I may not agree with that kind of swap but at least you have sound reasoning.
You using the whole fist Doc?

by Arnold Babar on Apr 18, 2007 3:32 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I seriously doubt
...we've seen Mark Teixeira's career year yet, or anything close to it.  Slow start be damned, I think he'll put an MVP-type line this year.

by Dustin on Apr 18, 2007 4:52 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Do you really think that
or are you like me and just hope and pray on bended knee?

career year
isn't he at that magic age where guys suddenly become bigtime power hitters?

by rentz on Apr 18, 2007 5:26 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Around that age.
Isn't he 27?  I think 28 is the magic year but I'll defer to Cahill on that.  Either way, close enough.

well
adrian is locked up for like 3 years longer, and tex is pretty expensive his 2 years anyway.

of course i would keep tex though.  but long term you could make an argument.

i do think tex will get it going, i know he will.  its just a frustrating wait.  the lineup doesnt work when hes not producing.

also, im really tired of the phrase "knee jerk"

by DSheppard on Apr 18, 2007 3:29 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

about as much
as i am in seeing those kinds of reactions.

It appears
That on a day by day, price/performance, and length of investment basis AG's contract is a much better deal than Teix's.

But it's more a matter of which player you want in your uniform.

Time does funny things. The worst of which is, it keeps moving when you don't.

by Ed Coffin on Apr 18, 2007 4:52 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Ed -
That's very true.  Unfortunately, the one we have likely won't be wearing our uniform for much longer.

If he can't learn to be a contributor for the first 1/3 of a season, and show some indication that he can beat the shift and hit to the opposite field when its given to him, I'll put my money on AG at this stage of their contractual careers.

WTF Zywicka!!!!!!
Where is "Go Rangers?????"  Is this a Ranger fan site or what?

and I am APPALLED.
Oh, to be a machine.

by barasch10 on Apr 18, 2007 6:02 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

oh yeah
well i posted in yesterday's gameday thread some stats for recent former rangers. well i just stats for one of them, which is weird...and i'll go ahead and repost the others.

rod barajas - .077 avg and .368 obp (!!)
kevin mench - .324 avg, .343 obp, 1 HR

adrian gonzalez - .288 avg, .328 obp, 3 HR

francisco cordero - 0.00 ERA, 0.6 WHIP, 5 IP, 9 SO, 4 saves

chris young - 4.30 ERA, 1.88 WHIP, 14.2 IP, 11 SO, 1-1 record

not making fun of barajas or chris young (pitches in a pitchers park...in the NL)

or lamenting the good ones.  just was curious.

Al Gore 2008 http://www.myspace.com/igotsculture

by gossamer on Apr 18, 2007 4:56 PM CDT   0 recs

CY > Padilla
Padilla 6.62 ERA, 6 K's 7 BB, 1.47 WHIP 0-3 record

btw Young's 1.84 WHIP.

We should have never got rid of Chris Young

by hurlerhurley on Apr 18, 2007 6:53 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Chris Young will win 15+
games this year and I'll damn well bet you he pitches better than Millwood, Padilla, and McCarthy. I'll look your ass up come the end of the season.

A's over LAAA 3-0
Haren with the win on a pretty good performance. Lackey gave up 8 hits. A's 10 LOB, Angels 12.
Well Mr. Burns had done it. The power plant had won it. With Roger Clemens clucking all the while.

by WyoRanger on Apr 18, 2007 4:58 PM CDT   0 recs

Angels suckin
6 in a row lost.  I thought that wasn't supposed to happen when you have as good as staff as they apparently do.

M. Young ss
M. Teixeira 1b
S. Sosa dh
H. Blalock 3b
J. Hairston Jr. lf

G. Laird c

You using the whole fist Doc?

by Arnold Babar on Apr 18, 2007 6:11 PM CDT   0 recs

Hmm
I don't know if I like the Kinsler at #2 thing all that much. I think the everyday lineup should be Kinsler at #3 and Young back at #2.
Well Mr. Burns had done it. The power plant had won it. With Roger Clemens clucking all the while.

by WyoRanger on Apr 18, 2007 6:18 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Good to see Blalock in there
facing the lefty. Wash said he's not playing the "lefty game" with Blalock this season. It's about time, here's to Hank!

Kendrick not with the team
He was sent to LA to see a hand specialist.

On the pre-game radio show...
...they said that Ozzie is fuming over Sammy's HR trot yesterday.  Expect him to get one in the ribcage.

by tricer on Apr 18, 2007 6:41 PM CDT   0 recs

I don't think Sammy's trot
is any worse than the homer announcers the ChiSox send up to the booth every night.

by cmkelly29 on Apr 18, 2007 6:46 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I think Ozzie is just pissed...
...because he wanted to embarrass Sammy last nite, and Oz ended up with the egg on his own face.

It should make things interesting.

If Sammy wants to make a permanent fan out of me, he should charge the mound and kick Buerhle's ass then point to the dugout and challenge Ozzie.

Now that would be cool.

by tricer on Apr 18, 2007 6:51 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

the trot
it's not like he hasn't done if for years, why the sudden outrage
"Pimps be damned, it's harder out here for a Rangers fan!" "If you don't throw strikes first, you're last."

by rentz on Apr 18, 2007 6:52 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I'm pissed...
...everytime I see it.  I HATE that kind of stuff.  I don't hope Sosa gets drilled, but I won't be surprised if he does.  And I won't say he didn't have it coming, either.

The NL guys should've broken him of that when he was a youngin'.

by Dustin on Apr 18, 2007 7:04 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

trot/hop
I hate it too, but i'm just saying he's always done it so I don't see why a team would suddenly be outraged by it.
And if sosa gets drilled i'd expect padilla to drill a few white sox players thursday

Notes on FSN broadcast
Mark McLemore looks like he should be a bank president or something these days.

The reception sucks ass.

I can at least see the game, and so I should probably be content with that.

by Dustin on Apr 18, 2007 7:08 PM CDT   0 recs

Can I make a prediction?
This is way out of character for me, just going on a feeling...

Mark Teixeira hits HR numero uno tonight.

by cmkelly29 on Apr 18, 2007 7:09 PM CDT   0 recs

I'd be satisfied
...if he'd just hit the ball hard a few times, but yeah, a homer would be nice.

Arguing at first base
Oh, to be a machine.

by barasch10 on Apr 18, 2007 7:45 PM CDT   0 recs

He was
ejected for throwing his batting helmet, which was a stupid  mistake by James Hoy.  The batboy was down the warning track and Hairston spun-lobbed it to him.  Hoy took it as a sign of anger, and tossed JHJ.

Hoy needs to get and keep a day job.  I've no idea how he ever made AAA, much less got a callup.

Okay
I was on the phone and missed this Hairston situation.  Anybody care to recap it?

by Dustin on Apr 18, 2007 7:48 PM CDT   0 recs

Recap
Crede made a great defensive play on a ball at third base, and fired a rocket to 1B where Hairston dove headfirst, seemingly just beating out the throw (just not according to the ump).  Hairston argued a little bit, then started walking away and flipped his helmet to the side in frustration.  When he reached the dugout (40 feet away) THEN the ump tossed him.
Oh, to be a machine.

by barasch10 on Apr 18, 2007 7:50 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I was distracted, but I thought I saw a relatively physical argument.  Was this after the ejection or after the call?
