Ian Kinsler for MVP

randomness
when i saw how bad a few premium level first basemen were doing, i decided to check out the rest...

lance berkman - .640 ops
albert pujols - .643 ops
mark teixeira - .590 ops
travis hafner - .788 ops
casey blake - .688 ops
paul konerko - .733 ops
jason giambi - .716 ops
lyle overbay - .712 ops
casey kotchman - .735 ops
sean casey - .517 ops
carlos pena - .728 ops
ryan shely - .351 ops
Doug Mientkiewicz- .500 ops
Kevin Youkilis- .735 ops
aubrey huff- .646 ops
craig wilson- .415 ops
scott thorman- .560 ops
carlos delgado- .536 ops
ryan howard- .808 ops
scott hatteberg - .698 ops
adam laroche - .487 ops
conor jackson - .635 ops
nomar garciparra - .796

and 9 others who are actually doing well like  mike jacobs and dmitri young.

lots of good players in there struggling right now.  and thats just first baseman (and a few DH).

kind of eases the mind a bit about tex.  not much though.  is tonight the night he hits a HR >< ?

by DShep on Apr 18, 2007 2:56 PM CDT reply actions

He's
a second half player, but theres nothing to worry about...

Teams aren't giving him a chance to hit one out, there pitching around to get to Sosa...

So until Sosa starts ripping it up, Tex won't see much to hit...

You could put
Barry Bonds or Babe Ruth in their primes behind Teixeira, and he wouldn't hit right now.

Teixeira can't even hit the many mistakes he does get.

Adrian
You forgot to list Adrian Gonzalez and chose to lump him in with the 9 that are actually performing right now.  More salt in the proverbial wound.

I'd love to swap 1st basemen with San Diego.

Really?
You would swap Tex for Gonzalez?  Why?
You using the whole fist Doc?

by Arnold Babar on Apr 18, 2007 3:23 PM CDT up reply actions

because
he's knee-jerking like so many other Ranger fans.

by t ball on Apr 18, 2007 3:26 PM CDT up reply actions

because...
Gonzalez is signed through 2010 with an option for 2011 and he's a pretty damn good player.  Teixeira will be a free agent in 2008 and we'll lose him for nothing.  I think its clear he wants to move on.

Gonzalez will likely never be as good as Tex was in 2005 but I'm beginning to believe that was Tex's career year and he'll never duplicate that either.  I know he won't if he doesn't learn to hit away from the shift.

by kwood on Apr 18, 2007 3:28 PM CDT up reply actions

hey...
considering contractual status for both players, you guys find this a stupid suggestion huh???  or does that not apply to your analysis?

by Arnold Babar on Apr 18, 2007 3:32 PM CDT up reply actions

I seriously doubt
...we've seen Mark Teixeira's career year yet, or anything close to it.  Slow start be damned, I think he'll put an MVP-type line this year.

well
adrian is locked up for like 3 years longer, and tex is pretty expensive his 2 years anyway.

of course i would keep tex though.  but long term you could make an argument.

i do think tex will get it going, i know he will.  its just a frustrating wait.  the lineup doesnt work when hes not producing.

also, im really tired of the phrase "knee jerk"

It appears
That on a day by day, price/performance, and length of investment basis AG's contract is a much better deal than Teix's.

But it's more a matter of which player you want in your uniform.

Time does funny things. The worst of which is, it keeps moving when you don't.

by Ed Coffin on Apr 18, 2007 4:52 PM CDT up reply actions

Ed -
That's very true.  Unfortunately, the one we have likely won't be wearing our uniform for much longer.

If he can't learn to be a contributor for the first 1/3 of a season, and show some indication that he can beat the shift and hit to the opposite field when its given to him, I'll put my money on AG at this stage of their contractual careers.

rod barajas - .077 avg and .368 obp (!!)
kevin mench - .324 avg, .343 obp, 1 HR

adrian gonzalez - .288 avg, .328 obp, 3 HR

francisco cordero - 0.00 ERA, 0.6 WHIP, 5 IP, 9 SO, 4 saves

chris young - 4.30 ERA, 1.88 WHIP, 14.2 IP, 11 SO, 1-1 record

not making fun of barajas or chris young (pitches in a pitchers park...in the NL)

or lamenting the good ones.  just was curious.

...they said that Ozzie is fuming over Sammy's HR trot yesterday.  Expect him to get one in the ribcage.

by tricer on Apr 18, 2007 6:41 PM CDT reply actions

I don't think Sammy's trot
is any worse than the homer announcers the ChiSox send up to the booth every night.

by cmkelly29 on Apr 18, 2007 6:46 PM CDT up reply actions

I think Ozzie is just pissed...
...because he wanted to embarrass Sammy last nite, and Oz ended up with the egg on his own face.

It should make things interesting.

If Sammy wants to make a permanent fan out of me, he should charge the mound and kick Buerhle's ass then point to the dugout and challenge Ozzie.

Now that would be cool.

He was
ejected for throwing his batting helmet, which was a stupid  mistake by James Hoy.  The batboy was down the warning track and Hairston spun-lobbed it to him.  Hoy took it as a sign of anger, and tossed JHJ.

Hoy needs to get and keep a day job.  I've no idea how he ever made AAA, much less got a callup.

by Dustin on Apr 18, 2007 7:48 PM CDT reply actions

Recap
Crede made a great defensive play on a ball at third base, and fired a rocket to 1B where Hairston dove headfirst, seemingly just beating out the throw (just not according to the ump).  Hairston argued a little bit, then started walking away and flipped his helmet to the side in frustration.  When he reached the dugout (40 feet away) THEN the ump tossed him.

A theory
And maybe it's way off base, but ...

He's gone all the way to the back of the box, mid-depth from the plate.  That opens up two of the 9 zones in the strike zone box, and results in K's and grounders.  He's simply too deep.

Conjecture:  if he moved about three inches up (from the back of the box) and an inch "in" (closer to the plate) he'd be back where he was in 2004 - 2005 and making much solider contact when he chooses to swing.  I'm not Rudy, but that's what I see and I have no idea why he's so deep now.

Time does funny things. The worst of which is, it keeps moving when you don't.

by Ed Coffin on Apr 18, 2007 8:08 PM CDT up reply actions

I don't
...see much of a difference in his stance, but I don't have a photographic memory from last year, either.  Young does have pretty good extension, though.  I don't think that's the whole problem.  I'll pay close attention during his next AB.

A grand slam, obviously
But if he would've thrown a GOOD sinker on that pitch it would've been another foul or an out, most likely.  I think he should've mixed it up a little, too, but after the walks I guess they wanted to stick with the 2-seamers.

Brings up a great point
If you have two legitmate firemen (Otsuka and Gagne), why do they HAVE to pitch the eighth and ninth as long as the rest of the pen is competent?

Young's talented...I'd just disagree there.  Hard work doesn't make a guy a .300 hitter every year.  Kinsler sure is.  Cruz.  I think Wilkerson's talented but not in a flashy way, and then he was hurt.

King Felix
just left the game in the first inning with only 2 ER's... hurt?

by cmkelly29 on Apr 18, 2007 9:25 PM CDT reply actions

supposedly his leg
and not particularly serious.

if he is down though, thats the mariners season right there.

He seemd fine walking off the field...
this is from rotoworld:

"King Felix leaves in first with injury

Felix Hernandez left Wednesday's game in the first inning with an undisclosed injury.
There was no obvious injury. Hernandez was struggling with his command, and the first three batters reached against him before he took himself out. Everyone who likes baseball should be hoping it not an arm problem, but considering that his legs seemed to be just fine as he walked off, it likely is. Apr. 18 - 10:25 pm et"

Ut oh
this is not good for baseball:

Felix Hernandez took himself out of Wednesday's game because of right elbow tightness.

Go away.
Leave us to stew over this abortion of a team in solitude.

If Buerhle cheated
I applaud him.

He got away with it.

Thats what baseball is all about.

I don't think he cheated.
I think the Rangers hitters sucked.  They've sucked all season and have been playing like they're not really taking the game seriously.  As a result, they got burned.  I hope it hurts a little bit.  Maybe they'll finally locate their respective sacks and start taking a little pride in their performance now.

Sucks
This feels the same way as the Mavs losing Game 6 in the Finals.

thursday
brings The Mean Streak (I hope that nickname sticks).

With the confluence of the white sox, a no hitter, and getting to face his old friend A.J., I'm sure frustrations will be taken out in a very meaningful way.
