Around SBN: The Ten Worst Swings Of The 2011 Season

poveda

12 k's in 8 innings, putting his K-BB ratio on the year at a much sturdier 24-8.  He only allowed one walk and two hits, but both hits were solo homers(one courtesy of Hank Conger), so his ERA actually rises to 2.03.  Oh well.

Johnny Whittleman also hit one out.

Is it too early to start the HPK(Hurley-Poveda-Kiker) hype?

If he turns it around, they can be "HPV".

genius...
except for the fact that Rick Perry will want all the Ranger fans to get a shot.
Jeff Henn is an idiot.

Yes
I'm high on Poveda, but let's see how he does in the California Softball League first.  He's a very pronounced flyball pitcher currently in a league that suppresses offense.

Well
just like Hurley belonged in any discussion of trio acronym talk back in the Eric Belin DVD days, I'm not sure how appropriate it is to compile any group of three top Rangers pitching prospects now without including Fabio Castillo.

Speaking of Fabio and Tuglet ...
... did you notice the make-up of the Spokane coaching staff?

http://www.spokaneindiansbaseball.com/news/?id=6332

Being speculative a tad ... and considering that Spokane should field more high draftees than usual along with a few highly touted Latin players, I think it's interesting that the Rangers have Tim Hulett managing for all the domestic talent's sake, a Venezuelan pitching coach [Juan Carlos Pulido] for the glittery Latin arms and a P.R. hitting coach [Hector Ortiz] for the comfort of Yan and Paisano.  All three are former major leaguers and two speak Spanish.  Sound thinking if that's what their intentions were.  Or ... could be that those three names were just next in the rolodex.

[If we see some aggressive assignments, that team could be loaded, Jack - can't wait to tune in.]

Interesting
At the least it's an interesting situation.

Regardless of how the two SS squads break down, most of these guys:

Fabio Castillo
Michael Kirkman
Matt Nevarez
Jake Brigham
Alberto Martinez
Johan Yan
Cesar Rojas
Eleno Soto
Wilmer Font
Gueris Grullon
Carlos Pimentel
Miguel de los Santos
Cristian Santana
Manuel Solis
David Paisano
and all those picks, including 5 #1s.

are going to be on them. Castillo, Brigham, Yan, Santana, Paisano and Solis, plus those 5-6 prime draft picks, are pretty big prospects and constitute a big chunk of hope. And a lot of those guys, like Brigham, Castillo and some of the picks, should be on that team, at the least.

Rojas was placed on the restricted list, I believe
not sure if he's going to be back.

It is exciting in that this is the year that we'll start seeing all of the big time latin FA signings coming to the US for the first time.

by JasonCole on May 1, 2007 2:07 AM CDT up reply actions

I probably
shouldn't have included Rojas anyway. He has done next to nothing in the US and will be 21 in July.

by Brett Perryman on May 1, 2007 2:19 AM CDT up reply actions

And
if I'm going to mention Font, Grullon and Pimentel, I should probably throw that Miguel Moreno's name out too. He's the 3B that I ran across later on on the Venezuelan website who wasn't included in the initial signing list but who got 200k from Texas and had the honor of leading in jonrronero and impulsador. Worth including at least.

by Brett Perryman on May 1, 2007 2:24 AM CDT up reply actions

by the way
I don't know if you ever figured that out, but I think jonrronero and impulsador mean home runs and RsBI, or possibly home run hitter and RBI man.

big chunk of hope
Yay, I'm really getting excited about the Rangers 2010 and 2011 teams.  Guess I'm a little more pessimistic than usual this morning, but I don't see the team taking off before then...

poveda
should have been in the rangers top 10 list on here.

by knockoutking24 on May 1, 2007 2:36 AM CDT reply actions

He was
voted as the #10 prospect in our community prospect polls this off season. (Well, #12, but once you subtract Danks and Massett, he was really #10.)

still not in top 10
and i think zy agrees with me here...

What?
I'm lost.

I thought you just said he should've been top 10?

My
'month into the season' top ten might look something like:
  1. Hurley
  2. since there really isn't a #2 prospect, I'll be optimistic and cross my fingers on Teagarden's elbow
  3. Kiker (absence makes the heart grow fonder I guess, although I had him about here before)
  4. Whittleman
  5. Castillo
  6. Mayberry
  7. Volquez
  8. Poveda
  9. Davis
  10. Botts
Arias, Lemon, Diamond, Littleton, Rupe could all make easy arguments.
