Jim Reeves has lost his mind

Or maybe he never had one to begin with.  I don't read the Startelgram much so maybe he has been delusional for quite some time.   Today's article is just ridiculous.  I think we can all agree that the Rangers' payroll is low compared to what it should be based on attendance and market size.  If Reeves wants to write that column then that is fine.  The reasons however are just retarded.

Asked how he might have spent an extra $10 million this season, general manager Jon Daniels, not wanting any part of the discussion, just shook his head, so let me answer for him.

He could have had Matthews in center, making those spectacular catches for the Rangers again. He could have signed left-hander Ted Lilly ($6 million a year with the Cubs), or kept Adam Eaton ($7.2 million with the Phillies) or Kip Wells ($4 million with the Cardinals), perhaps even two of the three.

So basically, as long as you spend money on anybody no matter how much they suck then it's ok.  What a great way to run a baseball team that would be.

you should email him about it
he'll give you a great answer about how he's been covering baseball for 30 years and how it is you who doesn't understand baseball.

Naaaa
Emailing him would be about as productive as responding to Longhorn or Sharky on here.

Reeves
As far as I'm concerned he lost his mind long ago.
I can't stand to read his articles half the time.

Matthews
He doesn't suck. I'd be happy to have him back in centerfield.
The good times are killing me.

You are right
Matthews doesn't suck.  I was mostly talking about Eaton and Wells.  However, Matthews isn't worth $10 million a year either.  I would not be happy to have him back at that price.

yah
I agree, I liked matthews and thought he was a good fit but not a 10mil/yr fit

In a relative world
where Mike Young is worth 5/80, GMJ may well be worth his contract.

fair
but also fair to assume that the rangers realized they were going to overpay for young and didn't want to have two bad contracts on their hands.

Good point
you probably can't afford too many of those mega contracts, and they need some flexibility for Teixeira.

If GMJ has 5 years close to last year though, he's not terribly overpriced given the shortage of decent hitting decent fielding CFs.

Before last offseason I would have laughed at the GMJ contract.  Now Im not so sure its a bad one, given the number of other, more ludicrous, contracts.

fwiw
i think GMJ will be above average, closer to last year than his previous career average.  has all the makings of a late bloomer and from what i've read, wouldn't really be susceptible to a payday related decline.

but, i have no solid evidence to go on (like a longer track record) and i think it would be foolish business if the rangers started throwing money at "career year" free agents as opposed to safer bets when everybody seems to get really big contracts anyway.  i wonder what input our scouts had.

yeah
If they start giving big money deals to career year players then the rangers might end up with a team of adrien  beltre's

This is the state of the league.  This past free agent market wasn't an aberration.

We could have
all the flexibility in the world, but I don't see Tex re-singing here.  One b/c I don't think he'll even try until he's a free agent and once that happens it'll be a bidding war.

More importantly though, at least in my mind, is the Rangers have to prove that they can win.  He really seems sincere when he talks about wanting to be on a winning team.  If the Rangers don't make the playoffs before his free agent year, I would look for him to be traded in the offseason or during the season at some point.

MY sounded sincere
about winning until they moneywhipped him, too.

I think
everyone can agree there will be many more teams lined up to 'overpay' Tex.

Contract
If they don't make the playoffs before his contract is up, I see no way that he stays here and honestly I can't say I'd blame the guy

No need for "flexability" for Tex......
he's gone, period. He will not sign before FA, and what do you think are the chances that he signs here with other (probably more lucrative) offers? Quit worrying about Tex, he's outta here!

Hope he plays well and we can either trade him or, more likely, get a couple of picks for him. While his counting stats are likely to continue to be good, I'm not sure he's the type that you "have" to sign at all costs. Everyone loves to point out that the Ranger's finished in last place with ARod, how much better have they fared with Tex?

If Tex is all but gone
Who do we have to replace him.  I don't really keep up w/ the minors enough to know about guys in the lower rungs.  Do we have a young 1B that will be ready in a couple of years or will we have to try and pull of a trade/free agent deal?  Thoughts..........

by cgolden on Apr 5, 2007 2:52 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

there's nobody that will match watch Teixeira
can do.  Of course, there's nobody in the minor leagues for any team that I'd categorically say is the "Next Teixeira".

That said, Junior Mayberry is probably the (only?) player in the minors that could be a future cleanup hitter.

True
But Botts could be a nice stopgap at 1B for a little while.

I think he'd do nicely in the 6 hole...

I like camo because it makes you blend in. But when you're not in the woods, it does the opposite. Its like, hey, there's an asshole.

If he produces like he did last season, sure.
If he reverts back to career norms, then it's not even close.  It will be interesting to see how well he plays when he's not pumped up to play against his old team.

by Athos on Apr 5, 2007 9:02 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

If by close
you mean close in value to MYs contract, I don't know.  If MY plays like his career norms, he's a .800 OPS, average to below average defensive SS making $16 million a year.  Matthews is a .750 OPS average defensive CF making $10 million a year.

Talking about Mathews actually.
As much as I love MY, he'd have to crank out his 2005 numbers every season to be worth his extension.  And while I'd be thrilled if he could do that, I don't think it's very realistic to expect it.  The Rangers overpaid on that deal, no doubt about it.

by Athos on Apr 5, 2007 9:19 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I guess it depends
on what the "new" level of spending ends up being.  If small payroll teams like the Rangers, and larger payroll teams like Cincinatti, Milwaukee Oakland and Minnesota creep up into the 80-90 million range, maybe GMJs contract looks less absurd.

2008
And if it makes Revo feel any better Young, Millwood, and Padilla will be making about $15 million more next year than they are this year.

Lilly got $10M per year, right?
Why would he have signed in Texas for $4M less?

by willamos2 on Apr 5, 2007 9:48 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I can understand Reeve's frustration
given that Minnesota, Cincinnati, Oakland and Milwaukee are all higher payroll franchises.

It sucks being with the KCs of the world in payroll.  It helps explain why we have so many holes in the lineup.
