Jim Reeves has lost his mind
Or maybe he never had one to begin with. I don't read the Startelgram much so maybe he has been delusional for quite some time. Today's article is just ridiculous. I think we can all agree that the Rangers' payroll is low compared to what it should be based on attendance and market size. If Reeves wants to write that column then that is fine. The reasons however are just retarded.
Asked how he might have spent an extra $10 million this season, general manager Jon Daniels, not wanting any part of the discussion, just shook his head, so let me answer for him.He could have had Matthews in center, making those spectacular catches for the Rangers again. He could have signed left-hander Ted Lilly ($6 million a year with the Cubs), or kept Adam Eaton ($7.2 million with the Phillies) or Kip Wells ($4 million with the Cardinals), perhaps even two of the three.
So basically, as long as you spend money on anybody no matter how much they suck then it's ok. What a great way to run a baseball team that would be.

In a relative world
fair
Good point
If GMJ has 5 years close to last year though, he's not terribly overpriced given the shortage of decent hitting decent fielding CFs.
Before last offseason I would have laughed at the GMJ contract. Now Im not so sure its a bad one, given the number of other, more ludicrous, contracts.
fwiw
but, i have no solid evidence to go on (like a longer track record) and i think it would be foolish business if the rangers started throwing money at "career year" free agents as opposed to safer bets when everybody seems to get really big contracts anyway. i wonder what input our scouts had.
Yep
This is the state of the league. This past free agent market wasn't an aberration.

We could have
More importantly though, at least in my mind, is the Rangers have to prove that they can win. He really seems sincere when he talks about wanting to be on a winning team. If the Rangers don't make the playoffs before his free agent year, I would look for him to be traded in the offseason or during the season at some point.
MY sounded sincere
Contract
No need for "flexability" for Tex......
Hope he plays well and we can either trade him or, more likely, get a couple of picks for him. While his counting stats are likely to continue to be good, I'm not sure he's the type that you "have" to sign at all costs. Everyone loves to point out that the Ranger's finished in last place with ARod, how much better have they fared with Tex?
If Tex is all but gone
there's nobody that will match watch Teixeira
That said, Junior Mayberry is probably the (only?) player in the minors that could be a future cleanup hitter.

True
I think he'd do nicely in the 6 hole...

If he produces like he did last season, sure.
If by close
Talking about Mathews actually.

I can understand Reeve's frustration
It sucks being with the KCs of the world in payroll. It helps explain why we have so many holes in the lineup.
