Danks MLB Debut

Today is the day. John Danks pitches at 1pm Central on WGN. He's going against Johan Santana. Yikes. Today's Austin American Statesman has a nice article discussing his journey to the Show. It also discusses how the MLB does the best job in celebrating how special it is to debut in the Big Leagues. Danks turns 22 one week from today. He said, "It's surreal, but it's starting to sink-in a little more now."

was it me
or were the twins having problems catching up to a 88 mph fastball

by shallrelicme on Apr 8, 2007 1:15 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

and now
santana is being clocked at 88, is that normal for him?

No
Normally he's between 93-94 on his fastball.

he had 3 up and 3 down, he doesn't look bad.  If he can't get that breaking ball over the plate, its going to be a long day...

It's too early to rule on that, but I am still iffy on the deal, but I know why they did it... that deal will follow daniels around good or bad, and if it turns out it was a bad deal he likely finds himself out of a job before long.

I dunno
Danks looked as good as advertised, but he left a lot of balls up in the zone today that the Twins just failed to take advantage of. Against a team like Boston at RBiA he might not have been so fortuitous.

I think Danks going to be a stud (and for the record I wish we hadn't made that trade), but for '07 I still believe McCarthy is going to be the better pitcher over the course of the season.

"Look out, Itchy, he's Irish!"

by thedirkatron on Apr 8, 2007 2:54 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

He had
a lot of problems locating the offspeed stuff early. Against a patient team, that will give him trouble.

Man
the moment I tell Ortonious that he's the king of the knee jerking Yahoos, this guy comes out of the wood works. I'm gonna hold off on all declarative statements for awhile.

by FirebatM3 on Apr 8, 2007 2:53 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

The GM's can't see into the future
to figure out who is going to be the better pitcher 10 years from now so why is it a knee jerk when someone makes a of them by what kind of stuff they have?

by shallrelicme on Apr 8, 2007 3:20 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Because
stuff varies from game to game? Because despite the fact that he had more Ks,  Danks had much worse control than McCarthy's first outing? Because it's retarded to say anything about any player in 1 game? BEcause any better offensive team would have made Danks out of the game in the first 3 innings? Seriously, pick one. Either way you slice it, you're being retarded.

by FirebatM3 on Apr 8, 2007 3:59 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

It's even more
stupid to judge stuff with one outing. If you don't understand that stuff/luck fluctuates from outing to outing, you're more stupid than I gave you credit for.

I think this blog is more fit for you.

by FirebatM3 on Apr 8, 2007 5:26 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

sure
a pitcher's stats are more indicative of how good a pitcher is in a one game sample size than his stuff. You're as dumb as I thought you were at the start.

by shallrelicme on Apr 8, 2007 5:39 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

What are you even trying to argue?
Are you saying we should judge him by stats or stuff? My argument is that either way, you're being retarded. You can't make judgements about young pitchers in 1 start, which is why you're retarded.

by FirebatM3 on Apr 8, 2007 5:43 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

judgements are made about players
on alot less than one major league start. Thats my point. You're saying I am retarded for not waiting a few years to make a judgement? Then it's not really a judgement then is it? It's a fact.

by shallrelicme on Apr 8, 2007 5:54 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I'm saying you're retarded
for not waiting a few weeks for a start. Those who make judgements on players in a few short weeks aren't very smart, so they're retarded as well.

Let's cut to the chase, I'll be you that McCarthy has a better year than Danks.

by FirebatM3 on Apr 8, 2007 5:59 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

this year it is a toss up for me
next year and the rest of their careers I would take Danks. I think this trade will come back to haunt the Rangers, in my opinion they traded a guy that is  more suited to the ballpark than McCarthy and has better stuff. The biggest reason they said they made this trade was because Danks was not supposed to be ready but yet he is starting for Chicago. I don't think a good GM makes that trade.

by shallrelicme on Apr 8, 2007 6:08 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Ok so your argument is
well, I think Danks is just a better pitcher despite the fact that I've never seen him before today, and I've only watched McCarthy pitch one time.

This is your argument? We're sure about this? Whatever, it's become apparent that you're an idiot. And great stuff (which Danks doesn't have as McCarthy commands his secondary pitches better than Danks), doesn't lead to success. Just ask Adam Eaton.

by FirebatM3 on Apr 8, 2007 6:15 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

you can keep on letting other people
tell you what your opinion should be. I'll keep on trying to figure things out on my own. If that makes me an idiot so be it but you will still be an asshole.

Not to mention Volquez has good stuff.
It doesn't look to me like Danks has control problems though.

by shallrelicme on Apr 8, 2007 6:15 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Were you actually watching the game?
He couldn't get the secondary stuff over to save his life in innings 1-3.

He walked more people in his minor league career than McCarthy and from watching McCarthy last year, it's obvious that McCarthy has better command of the breaking stuff. What part of your argument makes sense?

by FirebatM3 on Apr 8, 2007 6:19 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

commanding his mediocre breaking stuff better
doesn't make him a great pitcher either. If my argument is flawed then so is yours.

by shallrelicme on Apr 8, 2007 6:26 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Wait
what? The curveball from McCarthy was arguably better. Dank's change was probably better, but he couldn't command it down in the zone. As a result, it got left up a couple of times (the linedrives by Cuddyer and Mauer, were on the change). McCarthy did a good job getting his change down in the zone, used his fastball well to compliment it and showed a better curve (a pitch that Danks rarely threw).

Look, it's become obvious that you've never watched either of these guys pitch and knows very little about baseball. If you think that 1) better stuff = better pitcher 2) Danks had good command today 3) You can judge pitchers by one start, any further argument is just a waste of bandwidth.

by FirebatM3 on Apr 8, 2007 6:29 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

my point was
"stuff" doesn't make a good pitcher.
Not saying danks won't be, but saying he will be great by seeing todays outings is kind of far fetched.

The Danks trade
What Danks did yesterday was belie the rationale for the trade being made in the first place, i.e. Danks is not a major league ready pitcher and McCarthy is.  If McCarthy v. Danks is a wash this season, it still means the Rangers overpaid for the former because the White Sox got Nick Masset for their bullpen.

Psychology 101
What is up with the SHUT UP advocates? Explain that to me?

"Everyone shut up and forget about it!"

Despite this comment's declarative force, the real strength of discussing this stuff is to investigate the situation with as many facts as possible. We certainly don't know the outcome of this trade on April 9th. But it's also fun to consider how this might unfold.

by 3Bagger on Apr 9, 2007 2:47 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Agee w/ it all
except the part about as many "facts" as possible.  I haven't read to many facts in this thread just a bunch of ranting by crazed lunatics (myself included).

Just to add my two cents:  Masset wins a Cy Young before either Danks or McCarthy, but McCarthy will make more money that the other two combined b/c he'll sign on as a spokesman for McDonalds in the next two years.  Danks, well I can't think of any amazing future for him just yet.

by cgolden on Apr 9, 2007 2:55 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Data
I agree that there's certainly not enough factual data yet. But, as all discussion topics come and go, eventually a subject becomes so obvious that there's little or nothing left to debate. Right now, this one is at it's maximum intrigue level (for me at least). Because none of us really know what lies ahead.

Just based on one start, the wisest move might have been to sign Kip Wells for one year (#3 or #4 starter) and see if Danks could deliver at the All Star break. But one week is not enough data to know that outcome.

by 3Bagger on Apr 9, 2007 4:00 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

If McCarthy vs. Danks is a wash this season...
Then that probably means McCarthy will have pitched himself out of the starting rotation, and the trade will definitely look like a better deal for Chicago.

IOW, I think Danks will struggle to keep his ERA below 5, and will likely be demoted to AAA or the bullpen.
