OT: Jerry Falwell dead

Looks like a heart attack. He was 73.

I'll leave the comments to others. Suffice it to say I wasn't a fan.

I love baseball. Baseball is fun. Yay baseball!

According to Sharky
Half the people on LSB are communists.

Yeah, but
Sharky also thinks our current president is too liberal, so consider the source...

Interesting quotes:
"Jerry has been a tower of strength on many of the moral issues which have confronted our nation," fellow evangelist Pat Robertson said Tuesday.

"I shudder to think where the country would be right now if the religious right had not evolved," Falwell said when he stepped down as Moral Majority president in 1987.

In 1999, he told an evangelical conference that the Antichrist was a male Jew who was probably already alive. Falwell later apologized for the remark but not for holding the belief.

Jerry
My favorite moment was when he blamed the 9/11 terrorist attacks on feminists, gays and lesbians, and People for the American Way. A man after Osama Bin Laden's own heart.

Didn't he do roughly the same thing w/ Katrina?

yeah...
...I toiled for years over the plans to hijack Flight 93.

Fuck Falwell and all of his enablers.

Maybe he didn't die, but was the only one of us Raptured?

this is
clearly bigotry towards Christians. I don't know why ya'll are imbred with it, but I pray for ya'll. I wouldn't call it going out on a limb to say that one or two of ya'll made it a point not to trash Sadam Hussein on the day of his death, because he was dead person and we should respect that, yet ya'll are trashing Rev. Jerry Falwell after he has died. Although you may disagree with him on pretty much everything, he is a million times better than Saddam.

Is he?
I could argue that he's not.  If there were a hell, they'd be in adjacent rings.

falwell
the man preached bigotry  in the name of god, to me thats no better than saddam

bigotry?
what are you talking about? Even if he did preach bigotry, which he most definitely did not, that is not worse than killing multitudes of people.

Falwell
He didn't preach bigotry?

Jerry on racial integration:

"The true Negro does not want integration...He realizes his potential is far better among his own race...We see the hand of Moscow in the background...We see the Devil himself behind it...It will destroy our race eventually...In one northern city, a pastor friend of mine tells me that a couple of opposite race live next door to his church as man and wife ...It boils down to whether we are going to take God's Word as final."

"I do question the sincerity and non-violent intentions of some civil rights leaders such as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Mr. James Farmer, and others, who are known to have left-wing associations."

Jerry regarding AIDS:

"AIDS is the wrath of a just God against homosexuals."

Regarding 9-11:

"I really believe that the pagans, and the abortionists, and the feminists, and the gays and the lesbians who are actively trying to make that an alternative lifestyle, the ACLU, People For the American Way, all of them who have tried to secularize America. I point the finger in their face and say 'you helped this happen."

Falwell also opposed U.S. sanctions against South Africa (though he claimed to oppose apartheid) on the grounds that it would lead to a fascist or Marxist regime in that country.

Believe what you want, but the man's words speak pretty loudly, and at the end of the day, I think he did more to turn people away from Christianity and religion than he did to promote true Christian belief, which is grounded in love, not hate.

Yep
That's about the best thing I can say for Falwell.....he was better than Saddam.  That's quite an endorsement.

I'm a Christian
...and I absolutely loathed Falwell and just about everything he said.  Combining all those churches into a political machine had Jesus frowning, I bet.

So when people say bad things about Falwell, they're not necessarily saying anything bad about God, Jesus, or Christianity.

And by the way...
the Republicans are going to win one for the Gipper, Rev. Falwell, and the moral majority in 2008!!!

The Gipper
I have to believe that he would be quite upset with how the Republican party has been run in the past decade.

I enjoyed Fred Thompson's...
response to Michael Moore today.  He gets my vote (1, because he's been in some okay movies, 2, because the response to Moore so quickly shows some internet saavy, and 3, because of my current policy of voting for seperate parties to control the White House and Congress).

by benmor78 on May 15, 2007 7:44 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

have you seen Fred's current trophy wife?
geeeeezus.  Even I know that's a skank.  His candidacy is DOA.  McCain may be the best the right has to offer.  If I were a conservative, I'd be really disenchanted right now.

Thompson is interesting
Fred Thompson and Bill Richardson are probably the two most appealing presidential candidates right now, to me, anyway.

by Adam J. Morris on May 15, 2007 8:23 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Richardson
He was my pick very early on to win the Democratic nomination. Who knows now, but I think he's a good candidate.

Agreed
But no chance at the nom.  Solid veep I think though.

Don't be so quick ...
Don't be so quick to dismiss Fred Thompson's shot at the Republican nomination.

http://www.rasmussenreports.com/public_content/politics/2008_republican_presidential_primary

They guy hasn't even announced if he's running ... he hasn't raised one dime ... hasn't made one commercial ... and he's running third in the latest Rasmussen poll.  That is amazing!

Someone has to win
in the lightweight Republican field.  I don't see Flip-Flopper Romney taking it.

You know its a weak field when Gingrich is thinking about throwing his hat into the ring.

I like Bill Richardson alot
Unfortunately, the camera doesn't seem to. That's gonna hurt him.

I don't know that much about Thompson, other than the fact that he is the darling of the National Review crowd.

I missed the debate last night, but what really startled me in the 1st debate was when 4 of the candidates raised their hands when asked if they didn't believe in evolution.

They have debates by raising hands now?  That's pretty funny.

Thompson
very very conservative.  pretty much by the book conservative.  should get the party nomination just cause he's the one that would seem to hold the party line the strongest - even for the war.

would have made a good Pharisee.
